Maybe we shouldn’t eat meat at all

I apologize in advance for ruining your Monday morning; you might want to skip over this video of halal methods of slaughter. It’s bloody, explicit, and distressing.

Of course, if you can’t bear to watch it (which is entirely reasonable — I don’t get into it, either), and yet you do eat meat, maybe you should try thinking a little more deeply about what you are implicitly supporting. I’m not a vegetarian myself, but I’m finding myself avoiding meat more and more often…I should probably just make the break and at least cut all red meat out of the diet. Videos like the one above do make that decision a little easier.

Note to Kevin- You may have some odd allergies or something, but for sane and evidence-backed diet advice try EAT, DRINK, AND BE HEALTHY by Walter C. Willett, who is dean of the school of nutrition at the Harvard Medical School. Online, see http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/what-should-you-eat/pyramid/ and similar websites like Oldways at http://www.oldwayspt.org/eating-well/introduction-traditional-diet-pyramids .

I’m currently reading about the “Paleo Diet”, in a library book by Loren Cordain, published in 2002. Basically, eat like the hunter-gatherers did, which (he argues) is what our bodies evolved to do. Fresh fruit, vegetables, LEAN meat, poultry, and seafood, no grains, no beans, no dairy, no sugar, no salt. Rather extreme, but you don’t have to do it strictly 100 percent, they allow 3 “open meals” per week. See http://www.thepaleodiet.com/faqs/ and perhaps http://www.dietspotlight.com/paleo-diet-review/ .

It’s a matter of emphasis. Lots of diets seem to agree that eating lots of vegetables, leafy greens (salads), and fresh fruits will be good for whatever ails you. Smaller amounts of whatever else will supply your protein; authors differ, some say whole grains/beans, some say NO!!!, lean animal protein only; eggs and dairy may be in or out. Who knows? Good luck in finding something that works for you.
