Tarryl Clark for Congress

Let’s hope Tarryl Clark can pull it off: she’s the Democratic candidate running against Michele Bachmann. She has a fairly sensible, centrist agenda so maybe it will work…but then, they could pull a mangy muskrat out of the Mississippi and run it against Bachmann, and it would be an improvement.

She doesn’t have a catchy campaign slogan yet, though. May I suggest “Tarryl Clark: Not Crazy” as a possibility?

Maybe we can come up with a slogan for Bachmann:

Michelle Bachmann: When reality just isn’t good enough!

Bachmann: The truth is powerful; it must be used sparingly

Bachmann even got mentioned in a recent piece on Republican historical revisionist wackaloons:

Maybe all those people who gave last-minute money to Tinklenberg will do it soon enough to make a difference this time around.

I do not know what’s wrong with that district but the sane people need to start voting.

  3. DaveWTC says

Barney Frank may have said it best:

“Any movement that has Michele Bachmann as its intellectual leader is going to be problematic.”

or something to that effect. Beautifully said and DNO! He was referring to the Tea Party movement, not bowel, although, now that I think about it, what’s the difference! (Link to this quote may have been on this site, can’t remember)

I’m on disability, but I’m donating $25 to her campaign right now. I’ve had more than enough of Missile Wackman. Who’ll join me?

  5. Yoritomo says

What about Maureen Reed? Isn’t there supposed to a Democratic primary, or is the party endorsement sufficient to make Clark’s nomination a certainty?

and this is the best we can find to run against Bachmann, yikes

Tarryl was a frequent volunteer in her church, where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, and was one of the first female acolytes (altar girl) in her parish.

  7. DaveWTC says

@#7 I will, and I live in MN 3rd where we have our own latent bible-thumping, ID horseshit*, nutcase problem that needs fixing.

    * Apparently, Paulsen voted to teach students “to question evolution” in MN schools in 2004 and to allow ID to taught in 2005 but went all wishy-washy later when he realized which way the wind was blowing, recovering with just enough BS during his 2008 campaign to let the right people know he still supports the idea of teaching ID; I guess the 2005 Mntka school board fiasco wasn’t a big enough smack in the head for him!

  8. Andyman says

    @ #9

Yeah that’s the downside to Clark, but lets face it, what she stands for in terms of beliefs and the fact that she wants Bachmann out of office big time clearly makes her out to be one of the good guys.

Unless of course she uses similar tactics and sound bites…

  9. Andyman says

Beliefs was a poor wording choice. I meant where she stands on the political spectrum.

Dems in the 6th have managed to find the only person less electable than Bachmann in the last 2 elections. Patty Wetterling has done great things, but she was a horrible candidate. El-Tink wasn’t much better. Hopefully they’ve tried something else this year.

Clark’s recent attempt to restrict state employees from staying at hotels that offer pay-per-view “adult films” for some reason doesn’t give me much hope.

And, in a pinch, it can always make a nice piece of toast.

  25. blf says

A toaster would make a better congressperson than Bachmann.

It would need to be at least 25 years old, so it’d be, at the latest, an ’80s model, and probably much older. With a frayed electrical lead, dodgy lever, mysterious scorch marks, and lots of burnt crumbs.

Still a better choice that BatsInMyBelfry.

Hey, thanks, Auditor, for inspiring me to look up Michelle Bachman with your passionate concern. I have now read of her…interesting political career, and I look forward to the people of the 6th district coming to their senses. Please, get more people to read it and weep. I can see why her policy on education alone would be enough to get some skeptics interested.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michele_Bachmann

Bachmann supports the teaching of intelligent design in public school science classes.[84] During a 2003 interview on KKMS Christian radio program “Talk The Walk”, Bachmann said that evolution is a theory that has never been proven, one way or the other.[85] She co-authored a bill that would require public schools to include alternative explanations for the origin of life as part of the state’s public school science curricula.[86] In October 2006, Bachmann told a debate audience in St. Cloud, Minnesota, that “there is a controversy among scientists about whether evolution is a fact or not…. There are hundreds and hundreds of scientists, many of them holding Nobel Prizes, who believe in intelligent design.”[87]

It is an object of some irony that the article cites her family as owning a mental health care practice. :)

    Sample:

“I look at the Scripture and I read it and I take it for what it is. I give more credence in the Scripture as being kind of a timeless word of God to mankind, and I take it for what it is. And I don’t think I give as much credence to my own mind, because I see myself as being very limited and very flawed, and lacking in knowledge, and wisdom and understanding. So, I just take the Bible for what it is, I guess, and recognize that I am not a scientist, not trained to be a scientist. I’m not a deep thinker on all of this. I wish I was. I wish I was more knowledgeable, but I’m not a scientist.” – Michele Bachmann interviewing with Todd Fiel at KKMS as quoted in the Stillwater Gazette, September 29, 2003.

  29. MAJeff, OM says

    Auditor #43;

I don’t know anything about Michelle Bachmann. I better look her up and see if I can see her speaking to see what your real reasons are for not liking her. Since this idea about her being a toaster, or whatever, has some ways to go as a form of deep political and policy insight.

See, the people who have concluded that a toaster would make a better candidate have looked her up and seen her speaking. Ergo, they have valid reasons for not liking her.

You, on the other hand are a liberturdian tea bagger who will support someone without knowing anything about them simply because they are a Conservative Republican TM.

How did Michelle Bachmann get on the stupid-person shitlist? Did you mistake her for a former Bachmann and Turner Overdrive band member?

Was that an attempt at being clever?

Surely you must have some reasons for it. Could it be a fervent belief in shutting down debate in schools and locking in dumb-left norms and beliefs? The need to end intellectual diversity?

How about a fervent desire to stick with solid science and accurate history in the schools and an equally fervent desire to keep superstition and historical revisionism out of schools?

Yes, Auditor, we’re all leftist socialist communist nazis who are on the dole, eating your tax money in the form of food stamps, when we don’t sell those to support our drug habits. Oh, and many of us are also students who have never worked a day in our lives at anything you would call a real job (since nothing that doesn’t involve dirt is a real job, right?). We’re all out to exploit the system and all those hard-working American tax payers that Obama is out to rape by making them cough up a little so everyone can afford a doctor when they’re ill, or just when they need another round of babykilling.

You’re obviously not interested in science, or in reality, so why pretend that you are?

Yes of course there will be some sort of excellent, non-religious and rational explanation for this. But we certainly are not seeing it from the people we would expect to see it from.

Because the reality-based community is not the reality-based community?

It is in the nature of things then, that if you forcefully cut off debate in this matter, we will go on another century, not getting a good answer to this problem.

No-one is “cutting off debate”, as long as that debate is grounded in reality. Which science denialists are not.

    So I’m a concern blogger.

Actually, I’m not even american. I just follow your politics with some interest. (In other words, don’t worry: I don’t vote in your country.)

Anyway. What she said in the interview that started this off was:

The news media should do a penetrating expose and take a look. I wish they would, I wish the American media would take a great look at the views of the people in Congress and find out are they are pro-America or anti-America

That’s a bit vague, but came as a follow up to some specific claims about Obama and his advisors, about whom she respectively said “I’m very concerned that he may have anti-American views” , and “I think the people that Barack Obama has been associating with are anti-American, by and large”.

As for defending McCarthy, I can not find a source for that, so I’ll cede that half for now – consider it a point in your direction, if you’re keeping track.

That still leaves her using “anti-american” as a smear aginst her opponents, and wanting to dig for “anti-american” sentiments in her political opponents. As directions go, that’s a fairly nasty one: In the best case, it’s a cheap way to condense “my opponents disagree with my policies, which are of course in line with some historical American Ideal” into a sound bite. In the worst case, it’s an attempt to seed a disrespect for the legal and moral standing of anyone she or her voters happen to disagree with. Either way, it leaves me with a sour taste, and that’s before we consider if she was indirectly refering to the HUAC or not.

We expect people who claim there are “alternative views” as if such things were legitimate science to have not done their homework, or to have been so heavily brainwashed by their religion that providing information to them is pointless. I suspect this is the case again.

Luther left no doubt where he stood concerning the Papacy when he wrote, “This teaching [of the supremacy of the pope] shows forcefully that the Pope is the very Antichrist, who has exalted himself above, and opposed himself against Christ, because he will not permit Christians to be saved without his power, which, nevertheless, is nothing, and is neither ordained nor commanded by God. This is, properly speaking, to exalt himself above all that is called God. . . . The Pope, however, prohibits this faith, saying that to be saved a person must obey him” (Smalcald Articles, II, IV, 10-12).

Michele Bachmann’s church the WELS, has an official doctrine that the Pope is the antichrist. It is right on their website which is copied above.

I’ve always wondered what the Catholics in her district thought about having a representative who is a member of a rabidly anti-Catholic cult.

Nice going, Nazi. You manage to contradict yourself in your first two points.

Science tells us we will soon be cooling. Science also tells us that extra CO2 is good for the environment. Economics tells us that this racket will destroy industrial civilization.

Nice lies, Nazi. I bet you say that science says that black is white, too.

Keeping debate open in school. Which will force those scientists, who wish to close debate down by force, to get their act together.

    Nice strawman-genocide, there, Nazi.

As well as a magnificent figure for a girl her age.

    Nice sexism, Nazi.

  67. Janine, Mistress Of Foul Mouth Abuse, OM says

    1. Drilling

For a commodity that will only last a few years. In order to replace it with a system that is even more unsafe.

    2. Cutting spending.

Where do we start? Why not the two biggest moneyholes, Iraq and Afghanistan.

You do know the the biggest growth in spending has been with the Republicans in recent decades.

    3. The global warming racket.

You are blowing out of your butt trumpet. Read what the climate scientists have to say. Not distorted stories as told by people who do not know the subject.

    4. Abortion.

And why is this an issue that should be resolved by individual states? Why not argue on a woman’s right? Oh. What that has been done. You just happen to not like the results.

    5. Keeping debate open in school.

There is no debate about evolution. Only about how it works. Or should children also be taught the fantasy of an earth centered universe in order to have debate.

Very good, Auditor. You are 0 for 5. Back to the minor leagues with you.

  68. Jadehawk OM, Hardcore Left-Winger says

    O.o

did you just make that shit up to prove the quoted point about you not being able to recognize a scientific explanation…?

  69. Rev. BigDumbChimp says

Science tells us we will soon be cooling. Science also tells us that extra CO2 is good for the environment. Economics tells us that this racket will destroy industrial civilization.

    Oh it does does it?

Care you point to the relevant scientific literature?

  70. Janine, Mistress Of Foul Mouth Abuse, OM says

He can blow that butt trumpet for such long and substantive notes.

He is the Kenny G of fucktards.

  71. efrique says

    Hmm. A slogan.

Tarryl Clark: Not completely bug-fuck nuts. So that’s a plus.

  72. Jadehawk OM, Hardcore Left-Winger says

Science tells us we will soon be cooling. Science also tells us that extra CO2 is good for the environment. Economics tells us that this racket will destroy industrial civilization.

    Oh it does does it?

Care you point to the relevant scientific literature?

what he means is that he read it in a magazine, or on some website.

because science is done by the popular press, dontcha know?

  73. Janine, Mistress Of Foul Mouth Abuse, OM says

Chimpy, I think the blower of the butt trumpet takes seriously the media hype of the seventies about global cooling. He is too stupid and lazy to find out that most climate scientists of that time did not by into it.

    Blow that tuneless trumpet.

  74. Nerd of Redhead, OM says

It ought to be. But unfortunately its not.

If you lie about that, what else will you lie about? Just about everything from the looks of it. Not acknowledging the truth gets to be habit that reflects badly on those who bear falsehoods. Lying loser written all over your posts.

  75. Nerd of Redhead, OM says

    Try me national socialist. I

Nobody here is a Nazi. Your claim is false.

Homo Erectus had our species pinned to the coast.

No citation, an obvious lie. Keep it up loser.

Now thats about the best guess I can make at it

I applaud your attempt a fiction. No citations to the peer reviewed literature means it is fiction. Like the rest of your posts. Worthless as far as information content goes.

And it is a practical matter therefore that you ought to let the Christians talk to the children, until such time as you get your act together.

What Xians? The liars and bullshitters who can’t show physical evidence for their imaginary deity, or that any written records for Jebus was at best written at least a couple of generations after the fact? What a loser.

  76. Rev. BigDumbChimp says

Not where you are no. But there ought to be. Thats the problem.

As soon as the people wanting a debate can provide some actual scientific evidence to the contrary, there is no debate on evolution.

    Period.

  77. InfuriatedSciTeacher says

Because if you don’t acknowledge,at least the appearance of this great leap forward you are not being serious. And it is a practical matter therefore that you ought to let the Christians talk to the children, until such time as you get your act together.

Because a Bronze Age fairytale is a better explanation than what science can provide? Really?! If you can’t personally explain how gravity works in light of both relativity and quantum mechanics, should we then be forced to tell children that their imaginary friend is what holds them to the ground?

So the apparent leap into the fossil record 200 000 years ago is apparent only.

Do you enjoy contradicting yourself, or did you copy and paste without bothering to read what you paste?

I’d be interested to hear what you think the definition of neotony is… you seem to have it completely up your own ass about that part. You’ve also pieced in bits that look like the Aquatic Ape hypothesis, which is a complete joke.

Other than that… your story revolves around the out of Africa theory coupled with an evolutionary bottleneck that caused further differentiation in Africa, which is reasonably well accepted. Tool use dates back at least 2.5 mya, so it hasn’t much to do with your question about the apparent rapid change in brain size of 200kya. The timing does intersect nicely with things like cooking, which coincides with the eating more meat and the greater energetic benefits that come from that.

Early on our adaptive differentiation kept on making us interbreed with H.E. I’m talking millions of years ago. But somewhere one lot of us had the lucky break of losing a couple of chromosones and this allowed for the adaptations to be no longer watered down as much.

There are so many things wrong with this set of statements that I don’t even know where to begin. Is English your native language? You seem to be having difficulty stringing complete thoughts together to form sentences.

  78. Rev. BigDumbChimp says

    Sorrry that should have been

Until the people wanting a debate….

  79. Nerd of Redhead, OM says

I must have come to the right place for evidence then after all this time.

Try the same place we get our information: the peer reviewed scientific literature. Not from liars and bullshitter denialists you thinkaccept as scientific… what a loser.

  80. InfuriatedSciTeacher says

    citations for my rant:

    cooking: Catching fire Richard Wrangham
(there’s some debate as to whether it was meat or tubers that cooking allowed greater use)

Tool use: Olduwan sites in E. Africa (a host of papers on this), and some S. Africa sites (D’Errico 2001, South African Journal of Science)

  81. Nerd of Redhead, OM says

    I made it all up.

We both know that. Which is why your tall tales are nothing to be concerned about. Loser.

I was hoping there would be a valid explanation somewhere on this site.

Try the peer reviewed scientific literature. Found at institutions of higher education world wide. You are obviously not acquainted with either higher education or scientific libraries. Loser

  82. PZ Myers says

Reaffirming his kook status, it turns out that “Auditor” is Graeme Bird under a new pseudonym.

  83. Meathead says

    The Auditurd of Record:
Homo Erectus had our species pinned to the coast. Being pinned to the coast we could escape from H.E simply by swimming out to sea. H.E was so much more powerful then us with his big bone density, but we could live on the coast and make it into the water, when any predator was around…blah, blah, fucking blah…

Ooh, I like the beginning but here’s how I with MY mighty “science” like to end the story

Then see, there were aliens passing by on their way to rape some sheep and they noticed how erectus was beating up on us and also how lithe, bony and delightfully rapeable we were. At once they abandoned their unseemly sheep-lust and took to raping H. sapiens. The alien DNA mixed with ours and gave us just that edge we needed to drive those erectiod bastards to extinction. Even today, our alien progenitors occasionally pay a visit and get a little raping in. Of course they have to be more low key these days, that’s why only backwoods hillbilly types like Auditurd here get to see them.

  84. ckitching says

    3. The global warming racket. Science tells us we will soon be cooling. Science also tells us that extra CO2 is good for the environment. Economics tells us that this racket will destroy industrial civilization.

So, now you trust the economists? Funny how you trust them when they say things that fit your preconceptions, and reject them when they do not.

Okay, why don’t you spin this next one for us. Michelle Bachmann said that she will not fully complete her census form because, “That’s how the Japanese were rounded up and put into the internment camps.” Of course, she wasn’t saying that she was going to be rounded up into internment camps, just strongly implying it.

Of course, since you’re implying everyone else here is a Nazi (despite the fact you’ve shown no indication that you understand what that is), you probably agree with her on this piece of personal paranoia.

  85. Janine, Mistress Of Foul Mouth Abuse, OM says

‘Tis, that was not a poe. The Auditbird means every incoherent tweet. You can visit the dungeon in order to find a link to his site. He devotes two posts to his being banned by PZ. Strangely enough, most of the comments are also by him.

  86. Rev. BigDumbChimp says

I’ll exorcise him with a far superior Bird, from Morris Day and the Time.

Were you watching Purple Rain a bit ago?

    Jerome, bring me a mirror.

  87. AJ Milne says

Hrm. I’ve nothing against Ms. Clark, specifically, see… Indeed, I’ve never even heard of her, technically…

But these ‘it could be worse’ campaign slogans are just too awesome to pass up.

    So… Umm…

    (Cracks knuckles…)

Tarryl Clark: I’ll stay on my meds.

Tarryl Clark: They got nothin’ nothin’ indictable on me.

    Tarryl Clark: Frequently sober.

    Tarryl Clark: Frequently lucid.

Tarryl Clark: Of sound mind so far as the court-appointed analyst could determine, anyway…

(/Mandatory TV Nation reference: ‘Louis Bruno… He won’t rat you out’)

  88. Meathead says

Yeah, I thought I heard the bird tweeting when Auditurd went off about cutting spending to get more jobs. No surprises.

  89. Comeback says

at the risk of making everyone jump back in their seats and go ‘whoah!’, has anyone given any consideration to the possibility that Graeme Bird may be smarter than all of us? (and I humbly postulate that at least 90% of you are smarter than I am.)
Is there a chance that he is a satirist of such extreme, cutting edge intellect that he makes The Chaser team http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/06/04/2589089.htm and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZw2Z7LJqxw look like a kindergarten nativity play?
No, me neither. This ‘person’ is the biggest whackaloon I have yet come across. Some of his terminology, his avoidance of actually answering questions and his non-evidential assertions are gob-smacking.
Rupert the Bear could poll more votes than him in an election.

  90. 'Tis Himself, OM says

    Janine,

‘Tis, that was not a poe.

So my other guess was correct: fucktard.

  91. Ol'Greg says

Holy crap. Every time I get busy with something it seems like this Graem Bird person shows up. I’m making a piece of artwork to donate to a local show that benefits the art community here. I baked some rye bread. It turned out awesome and I plan to blog about it and some other random crud in a minute.

Oh well… always missing the action :P
