This truly must be hell on earth, then, as poorly reasoned arguments for the supernatural are the norm. But hey, they have to have SOME kind of arguments, right??

  2. Lord Zero says

Its fun than a well reasoned hell for atheists which
love logic and reason, must be full of boloney.
Its certainly the hell which i would fear.

Love the “after-comic” (roll over the big red button under the comic):

“If I don’t exist, how do you explain these deceptive fossils?!?”

    LOL

“…poorly reasoned arguments for my existence.”

So, what’s the difference between then and now. I can handle it.

It’s true, the devil is a woman. Knowing that creating a deity would be troublesome, the christians decided to take a normal woman and mold her into their supposed adversary. Thus was born Anne Coulter.

  6. Fred Mounts says

Satan is a woman that has abortions all day, every day. Every time the foetus grows back, the abortion takes place anew. Mwa ha ha ha ha! Fear the evil!

    John Chrysostom at #17:

I’m not sure what you’re asking. There is unequivocal evidence for the existence of humans.

    Humanism 1-0 theism

  8. says

But isn’t a somewhat changed scenario considered to be heaven for the mindless? For one thing, poorly reasoned arguments are made far more often for god.

I guess it’s the Twilight Zone all over again, with heaven for one being hell for the other. The triumph of mindlessness, however, is what the religious always predict (in the very long run, they’re almost certainly right).

Really, not being pressured to think seems to be the main goal of many godbots.

    What’s the evidence for humanism?

If you’d like Biblical evidence, there’s:

Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. Matt 7:12 (KJV)

And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. Luke 6:31 (KJV)

Fred Mounts #19, have you heard of Lilith? According to christian mythology, she’s the first woman. She was created from dust like Adam but refused to submit to him. She wanted equality *gasp* so as punishment god condemed her that 100 of her children a day will die. Very merciful isn’t it?

PZ, that comic is found at http://www.smbc-comics.com and if you go there, there is always a red button at the bottom right of the comic. Roll the mouse over it to find an additional bonus panel. Today’s is pretty darn good.

Do all these aborted “babies” of Satan go to heaven or hell?

  13. Fred Mounts says

    Alverant @23:

Fred Mounts #19, have you heard of Lilith?

I recall hearing of her before, but not in that particular regard. God damn religionists are a nasty bunch.

As I was inspired by Walton to make up stories on the fly, perhaps we should conference him in on the matter.

For my part, it depends on how God is on his stock of souls on any given day. If the warehouse is stocked, the ensouled foetuses go to heaven; if he’s running a deficit, and has issued rain checks, the foetuses no doubt go to purgatory for 7,000 years. If God has seen fit to ensoul the foetuses with sinful souls, the foetuses skip go, do not collect $200, and go straight to the fiery pits of hell, there to be burned for all eternity, much like the sarlacc pit digests its food. Remember, however, that this is all subject to Walton’s final approval, or a proxy’s, should one be designated.

there’s a thread somewhere in the archives that feels exactly like that! :-p (and yes, it’s all facilis’ fault)

** stereotypical images, or why is Darwin shown aged with flowing beard? **

Saints of science; icons of the state.

Old Darwin, like fossil Newton before him, has long since been venerated by the British Establishment. The remains of both lie within shouting distance of one another in Westminster Abbey.

Darwin with his prophet’s beard, a childish image of God in the clouds, appears on the back of the ten pound note.

Magical thinking and supernaturalism still thrive. (Otherwise, a stereotyped image of the Devil greeting a dismayed new arrival in Hell could not work as a joke — the medieval xian context lives on.)

The de-deification of western culture is our task for the next thousand years.

If anything, I expect a Wellcome to Hell like that:

“Christians? Christians? I’m sorry, Jews were right”.

Pascal’s Wager could turn a very bad thing if God bothers more against incorrect theism than atheism.

  18. Zarquon says

everyone knows The Devil is female.

Wrong. Everyone knows the devil is Peter Cook. And hell is endless reruns of that other version.

  19. Hugh M. says

John Paul II, said that hell wasn’t real. Benedict XVI, says hell is real…

Wish they’d at least get their story straight. They’ve only had 2000 years to work on it. Sheesh

    Randomfactor@24,

“What’s the evidence for humanism? The existence of humans.”

Are you sure? The existence of humans may be better evidence for tribalism and cultural xenophobia. This reports a hypothesis that the small effective population size of humans is due, not to a small founding population bottleneck, but to the extinction of other populations at our own hands. Is that true “humanism”?

    http://sciencenow.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/2009/108/2?etoc

Since sciencenow articles sometimes don’t stick around, I will note that this article was about the work of Paleoanthropologists Jean-Jacques Hublin and Luke Premo of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany

  21. windy says

    africangenesis, how do you get

“This reports a hypothesis that the small effective population size of humans is due, not to a small founding population bottleneck, but to the extinction of other populations at our own hands.”
    from
“Hublin and Premo propose that if human ancestors selected mates from similar backgrounds, there would have been a lot of inbreeding within different populations, restricting the flow of new mutations to other groups.”
    ?

I suppose you took the next sentence “If these guys on the other side of the river spoke a different language and had different weapons, you would not try to mate with them or they might kill you,” and ran with it. Try reading for comprehension next time.

  22. africangenesis says

    Windy,

I didn’t just run with it. I assumed some scientific literacy as well. What do you think caused the “extinctions” they mentioned, climate change? These are modern humans, they usually don’t go extinct on their own. Or do you believe modern Native Americans were really the “first” americans? Lots of peoples got exterminated or PUSHED to marginal lands and then went “extinct”. There is little reason to believe it wasn’t the rule rather than the exception. That is the hypothesis at least. It is plausible with some evidentiary support.

  23. John Chrysostom is dumb says

    What’s the evidence for humanism?

That’s a category error, like asking for the evidence of pessimism or capitalism.
