Get ready for Comfort

The ever-hilarious Ray Comfort will be on radio station WDAY shortly, at 10am Central — tune in and leave your rebuttals, humorous sneers, brutal put-downs, and random comments here. I’ll be on the same station, same time tomorrow.

Question: Explain what intelligent design is?

Answer: Everything is intelligently designed, it didn’t happen by accident. Explosions don’t produce order, they produce chaos. When he became a Christian, he claims he couldn’t find evidence to back up evolution. No species-to-species transitions in the fossil record.

He actually says this: Dogs do not have chickens. Chickens don’t lay eggs with puppies in them. This is apparently evidence against evolution.

Karen calls in with the Galileo issue: equates Comfort to an inquisitor. Comfort uses this to disavow Catholicism, and says “don’t blame Christians” for the Catholics. Weird.

Alex calls to ask what motivation scientists have for promoting evolution. Two answers: Morality. It lets them lust and sin at will. Money. You can get rich for just finding a bone.

Caller whose name I missed: animals have morality, and since there is no evidence for ID it shouldn’t be taught, but could be debated.

Answer: Dogs feel guilt. Claims there is proof for ID, which is, for every creation, there must be a creator. Paintings have a painter, etc.

Evolutionists claim there was nothing that created something, which is scientifically ludicrous.

John rambles on about how most people believe in god, so he doesn’t understand why there is a debate. No answer.

Another caller (Poe?) suggests that maybe astrology should be taught in astronomy, Atlantis in geology. Comfort replies by claiming that evolutionists are advocating censorship. Announcer brings up Expelled — complains that there was no evidence presented in the movie. Comfort claims that just showing the complexities of the cell is proof. The fact that people don’t fall off the earth is evidence for intelligent design?

Jason brings up the uncaused cause argument: if you’ve got one (god), why can’t there be more than one? Usual avoidance: god is eternal. Bleh. Agrees that other people invent gods, but his god is real.

Derek argues that the fairy-tale perfection of christian religious belief is unbelievable. Morality comes from events on earth.

Announcer asks about the banana argument. Comfort disavows it, claims that it was evolutionists taking it out of context to make him look bad.

A caller asks about Satan…we get biblical babble in reply.

Announcer is skeptical about both sides. Comfort uses this as an excuse to trot out his tired “everyone is a sinner” argument and that you need to read the ten commandments. He’s just preaching at this point.

Cal calls in to promote Answers in Genesis. Phbbththbht. YEC idiot.

Carol is a paleontology student. She points out that they do not do it for the money, and that it’s because they love the work.

Sign out at 10:40am.

That was truly awful. Comfort is a real ignoramus. However, I can see now why they decided not to do a debate: they really gave a lot of air time to callers, which is good, I think. If I’d been on at the same time, they wouldn’t have been heard over my snarling and bone-cracking and horrible slurping noises, and Comfort’s screams.

Ray flat out lied when he claimed that atheists misrepresented his banana argument by removing it from the context of his coke can analogy. Not true. Here’s the whole thing, both the coke can and the banana story, and it doesn’t help him: both parts are incredibly stupid.

  1. Quasarsphere says

Christ on a frigging bicycle! I’m a high school dropout, and I had no difficulty at all seeing through this wanker’s bullshit.

He’s from the same country as me, too. The embarrassment is overwhelming.

  2. Andy James says

Ray Comfort must be an idiot. Only an idiot would be capable of such lies, and yet not make money from it.

    Oh wait…

  3. 2-D Man says

Near the beginning (I could only put up with it for so long), Comfort makes a statement to the effect of scientists in 100 years laughing at what we call scientific now.
I’m studying to be an engineer, so I’m at least moderately familiar with the scientific process and I’ve never had the urge to laugh at someone who honestly and diligently performed scientific research. Even if their conclusions were wrong or have been outdated by more modern research, in my experience, modern scientists still look to such people with professional respect.
Aren’t we dwarves on the shoulders of giants here? (I prefer a building analogy as people haven’t changed that much in intelligence over the years. You place your brick in the building. The next person stands on that brick and from the new vantage point, can determine where the next brick should go.) Why does this fool get airtime?

  4. raven says

It surprised me when a coworker at the time self-assuredly announced that Catholics weren’t Christians.

The fundies hate catholics. The catholics are the church of satan and the pope is the servant of the antichrist. The RCC of course, has said for centuries that the protestants are fake and they are the One True Church. Ratzinger said that again a few months ago.

You forget, the two movements fought a war for 400 years that wound down a few years ago after tens of millions were killed. In some neighborhoods in Europe (N. Ireland) being catholic or protestant in the wrong neighborhood or bar can still get you killed.

The Mormons claim they are both wrong and they are the One True Church. So do the Jehovahs Witnesses.

We won’t even mention the hindu, buddhist, jewish, moslem religions etc. who are even further out there. Jesus said “love thy neighbor” but he didn’t say anything about the apostates, heretics, pagans, and unbelievers down the street.

  5. Ichthyic says

Why does this fool get airtime?

that’s actually a pretty good question.

    let’s compare:

PZ writes for seed magazine, teaches students at the university level, has published numerous scientific and nonscientific articles of merit.

Yeah, I could see inviting him on a radio program.

    RC?

    *thinks hard*

oh yeah! he’s famous for making an idiot of himself with a banana.

    Am I missing something?

    we live in wondrous times.

  6. Flub says

Nipples on Men = No God.

Unless he had a cupboard full of them he needed to unload.

  7. ken-ny-is-back3 says

    >daveb, Kenny is banned because: (1) he asserts the same
    >things over and over again without support;

This is definately not true. I have shared many, many, many links and proof, but you choose to ignore that proof.

This is why you can’t win with Atheists, they just don’t care what proof you give them, it is still not enough.

God could come to you personally and talk to you and you would say it’s a hallucination.

The only proof you will accept and it will still not be enough is if you could prove God through the scientific method and it would then be shunned again. Something would be wrong with the results.

That is why atheists are weak minded. No matter what proof you give them, it is not enough. You have an agenda. You really want religion gone out of everything including life if you could. You can’t because we have that in the constitution but I wouldn’t doubt that some people here would want that changed.

Oh, and I wouldn’t bother deleting these as I have them saved in notepad and I can re-post them all day long.

  8. says

    “if A is the n-father of B, then B’s father is A’s n+1 father.”

    Should read as:

    “if A is the n-father of B, then A’s father is B’s n+1 father.”

But whatever. It’s obvious what I meant, and I was just idly throwing out Poe-compliant sophistries for the lulz.

  9. Ichthyic says

It’s obvious what I meant, and I was just idly throwing out Poe-compliant sophistries for the lulz.

in case it wasn’t clear earlier, I think most of us understood that.

I got a chuckle out of it, in any case.

  10. Ichthyic says

Oh, and I wouldn’t bother deleting these as I have them saved in notepad and I can re-post them all day long.

    shorter kenny:

I’m an insecure little prick, and love to flaunt the fact that I’m a moronic criminal to gain attention.

has your family disowned you yet?

btw, at some point you might want to consider that violating the private property of someone online is grounds for having your internet connection pulled by your provider.

just a piece of advice, which I actually hope you don’t heed.

frankly, you’d be doing the world a favor if you managed to shoot yourself in the head by getting your connection pulled.

  11. ken-ny-is-back4 says

    >The one plus of having Kenny around is to remind the rest
    >of us of the benefits of not being a credulous, delusional
    >dimwit with the brain of a peanut and a penchant for
    >repetitive, incoherent blog posting.

Well, that might mean something if you were doing something for humanity. Since your not you are just taking up space and costing everyone on Earth.

    This message has been logged.

  12. Ichthyic says

I am not doing any harm to anyone.

unfortunately, that simply is NOT up to you to decide.

think about it for a moment (yes, I know your brain doesn’t work well, but try):

If you break down someone’s door, and wander around in their house against their expressed wishes that you not do so, that’s illegal, right?

PZ has expressed, on numerous occasions and in writing, that you not attempt to post here any more.

He’s made it perfectly clear why (visit your dungeon page), and has deleted your posts to even make it more clear.

the only reason PZ isn’t filing charges is that the invasion you are practicing now isn’t illegal in the criminal sense, yet.

However, it IS punishable. You really should check with your internet provider and see how they handle “bad behavior” complaints.

yes, this IS private property, and YES you are violating the rules for this board, to the point where it could easily be considered a form of harassment. That is indeed grounds for complaint to your ISP, and PZ has tons of evidence to use against you should he choose to do so.

If I would get my connection pulled I could then file a lawsuit. That would be huge, since it would pretty much threaten the rest of the Internet.

    LOL

good luck with that. a business has every right to refuse you service at any time, or did you not know that?

your ISP could just tell you to fuck off any time they wished, for no reason other than they just preferred not to have your business any more. There is really nothing you can do about it, other than choose another service provider, and hope they haven’t heard of your criminal behavior.

you have much to learn about how the real world works.

    better get on with it.

  13. Claudia says

You don’t have the right to post on anyone’s blog. You are given the privilege.

  14. Ichthyic says

This is basically free speech and when I have something to say I should be able to say it.

    you’re such an idiot.

this is NOT an issue of free speech. nobody is stopping you from starting your own blog and saying whatever the fuck your addled brain spews out on any given day.

    …and guess what?

that being YOUR blog, you have every right and opportunity to allow or not allow any kind of post in response you wish on it.

    Just ask the Discovery Institute.

This being PZ’s blog (just as if it was his personal home), he has every right to decide who gets to post here, just like he has every right to decide who gets to come into his house to visit his family.

If you write a letter to a newspaper for their opinion column, do you also think that the newspaper has a “free speech” responsibility to publish it?

If so, you’re in for quite a shock:

    they don’t.

  15. Faid says

For a guy that has been on the internet “longer than most of us”, he sure knows preciously little about it.

Looks more like a 16-year old spoofing troll to me.

  16. Scrofulum says

“God could come to you personally and talk to you and you would say it’s a hallucination.”

And that’s because it would be.

Come on Kenny, the universe existed quite happily before you were born, and will continue in the same way after you die, so why does it need you (or any of us) to carry on afterwards. Just because you’re afraid of not existing doesn’t make an afterlife true.

The reason I like the theory of evolution is because, if you apply it to lots of little things in life, it stands up to scrutiny. It works. It has a huge amount of evidence to back it up. It makes sense. I haven’t been force fed this by an evil school of evilutionists. I have read objective, peer-reviewed evidence, where the ONLY drive is the search for understanding.

Religion is a very simple concept and can be understood immediately, like most fairy tales. Evolution needs a bit more thought but can be grasped by most people with a spot of intelligence and effort. Give it a go. Then come back and argue against it when you understand it.

  17. MAJeff, OM says

I’ll repeat what I said above for the idiots bringing out free speech claims here:

    PZ =/= the state.

There is no “freedom of speech” issue with banning people from blogs. None.

  18. PaulB says

    RE: ken-ny-is-back3

    Ken you are a Fucktard!

The only proof of god I need, is for you to climb the Empire State Building & fling yourself off the top. Before you do this, arrange for your best friend in the sky, to despatch a flock of angels, preferably naked big-breasted one’s, who will catch you mid-descent & shepherd you safely back down to the 6,000 year old planet you believe is the the centre of the universe.

  19. says

    Kentard:

This is definately not true. I have shared many, many, many links and proof, but you choose to ignore that proof.

This is why you can’t win with Atheists, they just don’t care what proof you give them, it is still not enough.

I’ll assume you mean the links you gave us for NDEs?

Hilarious. You post anecdotes from people but can’t post anything of substance and you wonder why we think you are a little child.

  20. spurge says

Kenny also ignored the fact that people who have different backgrounds have different NDE experiences.

  21. Snark says

God, how can you all be so blind!
Of course the banana was designed!!
It is obvious that they were shaped like that by the creator, so they would fit perfectly in creationists butts.

  22. Iain Walker says

Late to the party as usual, and yes, I know Charles is a drive-by troll who will probably never read this, but I couldn’t let this lie …

    Charles (Comment #244):

The more intelligent people will know that species-to-species evolution is false.

And anyone with a bastard clue about the subject will know that you’re talking nonsense.

Species-to-species transitions can be observed in the fossil record, given certain conditions of fossilisation. These conditions usually obtain with planktonic species like graptolites and radiolarians (see example here, which are (a) exceedingly numerous, and (b) die and sink to the sea bed as part of a process of constant sedimentation, resulting in a continuous record with a wide sampling of the variation within the population. That’s what makes it possible to see the transition, by tracking changes in variation through the rock strata.

Some other examples (from the same site) here.

For most fossil species, of course, these ideal conditions don’t occur – sedimentation is irregular, population sizes are lower, and so fewer individuals get fossilised. So species-to-species transitions are rare, and biased towards certain groups of organisms in certain environments.

  23. Iain Walker says

    raven (Comment #506):

In some neighborhoods in Europe (N. Ireland) being catholic or protestant in the wrong neighborhood or bar can still get you killed.

Heh. I once managed to get the crap beaten out of me in sunny Belfast by a bunch of Protestant skinheads who thought that me and my mates were Catholic. Naturally, the only member of our group who got away without a scratch was the only one of us who was, in fact, a Catholic. So not just sectarian bigots, but incompetent sectarian bigots.

As it is, being the wrong denomination is far less likely to get you killed in Northern Ireland these days, although religious stupidity persists. Sometimes I think the only reason the DUP agreed to power-sharing was so that they could try and push the teaching of creationism in schools. Fortunately, the education portfolio in the NI Assembly Government is held by Sinn Fein (and it says a lot about NI that having a Catholic ex-terrorist party in charge of children’s education is the preferable option).

  24. Snitzels says

Since I don’t really have time to go through 527 comments, has the radio show posted the archive yet? I still can’t get their streaming to function, and was looking for the mp3, anyone seen it?

  25. black wolf says

    Snitzels,
someone posted a link to the mp3 in this thread above.

I couldn’t get the stream to run yesterday, but today it’s working. Weird. Perhaps it was just the computer restart. (I’m using FF3).

  26. Loren Petrich says

As to dogs being color-blind, their vision is much like human red-green color blindness, which means that they see only two colors: yellow and blue. What we would see as red or orange or yellow or green, a dog would see only as yellow.

  27. Ian says

“When he became a Christian, he claims he couldn’t find evidence to back up evolution.”

This is perfectly true, PZ, When they turn of their brain, they absolutely cannot find scientific evidence. Why would you call them on this as though it’s a lie?!

  28. Windnpine says

Best part of Comfort’s banana analogy: “it is pointed at the end for ease of entry.” [tee, hee] Maybe god should have made it ribbed, too.

  29. Paco says

I’ve started listening to the “Comfort interview”, so funny that he started sayind right of the bat that evolution is a fairy tale. And his crazy religious beliefs are…? Based on evidence? Factual?
And the first lady that called and gave the Galileo example with the catholic church, he totally danced around that saying that the catholics did it, not the “christians”, he would never see that she was trying to make a point that she was giving an example of religious thinking in general trying to explain natural phenomena. I’m going to finish listening this later, it’s too painful and disgusting to take it all in at once.

  30. Raiko says

Announcer asks about the banana argument. Comfort disavows it, claims that it was evolutionists taking it out of context to make him look bad.

Announcer deserves a big, smiley THANK YOU for that one. They should have played it in context to make him look bad.

  31. swangeese says

Thank you BG for the mp3.

I had to take a few breaks because my brain can only take so much painful stupidity in one sitting.

Ray Comfort is a man that is happily ignorant and completely uninterested in the natural world around him. Thankfully there are people that are interested and also those that add to our knowledge.

And WTF does a court have to do with non-human animals?! Non-human animals may not have a Judge Judy, but they do have behavioral rules.

When creationism intelligent design has a body of scientific evidence supporting it, then we’ll talk about teaching the controversy. Right now there is about as much evidence for ID as there is for the Wicked Witch of the West’s flying monkeys.

And funny I was at the answers in genesis site yesterday–reading their defense of unicorns in the Bible. LMAO

Well if religion was so simple, then why do people on here not get it? They really do not understand it at all. They completely miss the point. Saying you understand something is not the same as actually understanding something.

It does not matter if Evolution is true or not to show that God does exist. It does not make a difference to my faith or knowledge either way.

  33. BaldApe says

Comfort says that evidence against evolution is that a building, a painting, a beverage can (specifically one that is red and blue, BTW), a row of leaves, and a car are all designed, therefore humans are designed as well.

In order for that argument to work, then humans would have to be like buildings, paintings, soda cans, rows of leaves, and cars. I suggest that the only way that could be true is for Roy Comfort to be in a car that just crashed into an outhouse decorated with an Elvis on velvet painting because he mistook a line of leaves for the center line because of the Red White and Blue he was drinking while being distracted by the banana which fit ever-so-perfectly in his butt.

I just watched that video. That’s 9 minutes I’ll never get back.

  34. CJO says

Quantum Mechanics show that there are many dimensions right next to us in the string theory and each of these dimensions are membranes and I really think this is the way to understand those other dimensions which we currently cannot see but that are there. These are the baby steps to proving that there is more than just this existence.

    Wow you’re dumb.

  35. Ichthyic says

Jeez, it’s Kenny and Kenny’s Same Old Shit.

he’s still playing the little gangster.

he just loves breaking into people’s houses and peeing on the floor.

I, for one, thank the maker for nipples on men. What would I do with my nipple rings if I didn’t have nipples?

  37. LisaJ says

Oh my. I just watched this video for the first time. Wow, wow, WOW! I mean, I’ve heard lots of talk about this banana argument, but this is just unbelievable to see. And Kirk Cameron…. why????? WTF happened to you?! Used to be a devout atheist, oh give me a break. I can’t believe what an idiot he is. I’m so disappointed, and I kinda just vomitted in my mouth a little bit after hearing Kirk equate a car designer to a human body designer. Wow.

  38. says

    We do get it.

pardon me, I have to take a break to troll the latest list of VBS candidates for my amusement. I will be back tomorrow to annoy the rest of you if I have not found a new victim/convert/whatever we call toddlers to abuse.

  40. Patricia says

    /snark on/
Wait a minute, isn’t mentioning Kenny ragging?
    Thank you.
    /snark/halfass off/

    Rag on!

  41. Wowbagger says

    Kenny the wonder-tard wrote:

Congratulations, Kenny – there’s a good chance that this is the stupidest goddamn thing anyone has ever said. That’s quite an achievement.

When it comes down to it you believe in a magic sky fairy – not only without evidence to support it, but despite evidence against it. What is there to ‘get’? That you’re irrational, delusional, disingenuous and intellectually dishonest?

We ‘get’ that – loud and clear.

  42. Juustin says

I love when Kirk goes on about how he was a devout Atheist and “Evolutionist”. I have seen a true hollywood story on Growing Pains, where they talk about how even as a teenager he was uncomfortable with some themes on the sitcoms and it gave him inner conflict because of his religion. When exactly did he stop being a “devout evolutionist”? When he was 14?
