It also points out why we shouldn’t be displeased that he’s been imprisoned: one of his ‘accomplishments’ has always been to make the scientific and rational thinkers of all ages feel ostracized by an ignorant majority. He’s a sad little man, but he’s also done a lot of evil.

I have been unable to find comment on this misleading story on any Scienceblogs blog. How curious.
Not that I’m implying that a virtuous publication like Seed would in any way provide support to the forces of irrationality, or that the Scienceblogs bloggers would sit idly by while their hosts propagate enormities. I’m sure I just overlooked the outrage.
I’m still not able to feel any pity for Hovind whatsoever. In accordance with your fine American tradition, he should have been rolled in tar and feather a long time a go, like any other dishonest snake oil monger. If you pardon the teleology-implying wording: the man had it coming for him, in more than one way.
Oh, and by the way – the young man in the true story behind the web comic did show some rather tremendeous courage.

ERV, I wasn’t there, so I don’t know…but at the last Hovind talk I went to, that was part of his schtick, to ask the audience to raise their hands if they believed in evolution (yes, I raised mine). He also specifically asked ‘easy’ creationist questions of little kids in the audience, and praised them if they agreed with him.
The official Free Kent Hovind petition is now open for signatures. Let see if they can top my Keep Hovind in jail petition of over 1,100 signatures. Not that it really matters.
10 years in prison, for something like a 650,000 rip off, when CEO’s who have taken millions and millions from pension plans or tax evaders like Leona Helmsly do less time.
There is something more going on here than just punishment for tax evasion.
