Selective pressure for lockpicking skills?

This is bizarre and obscene.

A man in India kept his wife’s genitals under lock and key. He drilled holes on each side of her labia majora. Before leaving the house, the man used to put a small lock in the holes. He kept the keys inside his socks.

I don’t even…

Do you think he reciprocated by getting a Prince Albert and letting her put a padlock on him every morning? It would seem only fair.

ITYM “infibulation”, not “Prince Albert”: a double piercing through the foreskin with exactly the same function (and intent) as that dude’s mutilation of his wife. In surprisingly recent times, it was not uncommon in some Western societies for male teens to be infibulated as a way of keeping their minds on their studies instead of sex.

There’s a first hand account in, iirc, Jim Ward’s long-defunct PFIQ magazine, by a guy who was infibulated as a teen living in Sweden.

If we can ever get rid of the old “wife=property” patriarchal mindset, this sort of thing should go away. I wonder if that’s possible?

I’ve heard of that kind of shit in BDSM relationships with “full time slavery”.

That’s… I can’t imagine how anyone could even come up with this.

(With the jokey title, I was expecting something funny.)

Also, from one of the news stories:
The lock was found because the woman tried to commit suicide by injesting rat poison and she has accused her husband of “misbehaving” with their daughter.

    I just. Fuck.

As I said on Taslima’s blog:

The part about this that makes me the saddest is that it didn’t surprise me at all.

    Jesus wept.

[Which might seem like an unusual exclamation for an atheist, but given the context of that passage, in which Jesus weeps for the sorrows of humanity, the phrase seems useful whether Jesus was a god or not.]

Iirc a recent article in one of the skeptic magazines examined the history of the ‘chastity belt’ and concluded that the usage of such devices was, while not exactly an urban legend, vastly inflated. Chastity belts have never been common in any culture — nor even endorsed as desirable. It was at best a fringe practice, and very likely most stories were apocryphal.

Maybe. I don’t know. This man’s actions were almost certainly heavily influenced by a culture which views women as property, and chastity/purity as a high virtue. I can at least imagine others doing the same thing… even if they’re not mentally ill.

Which leads to the interesting question: how do you distinguish clinical insanity in a society gone mad?

This is sad and disgusting. India is a highly patriarchal and misogynistic society, esp. rural India.

This particular kind of inhumanity seems fairly uncommom, though there’s many other more common evils like dowry deaths/suicides and “honour” killings and of course rapes. I haven’t heard a lot of similar news stories or myths even, atleast not in my part of the country.
    /anecdata>

Maybe there’s some research somewhere on chastity devices…

Hmm, its not research, its a news report and it says the document type is a statement and it doesn’t cite any sources or stats but still, those aren’t extraordinary claims…

    # 11:

how do you distinguish clinical insanity in a society gone mad?

Very old question (except for the very recent “clinical” label). If I am allowed, societies do not “go” mad. They start mad. I seriously doubt that any human being actually displaying “an average person’s” behaviour would be regarded as sane. The way I see it, humanism is a large-scale attempt to outgrow crowd-madness.

I know that ‘eye for an eye’ mentality does not work, however, it would be cool if this guy was sent to an American prison for a few years.. He’ll soon learn what it feels like to be controlled sexually.

Don’t get me going about BDSM. Ooops, too late; you’ve already done it.

BDSM play can be a fun, even cathartic, activity, but participants are well advised to always remember that it’s all about fantasies. Unfortunately, some of them take it seriously.

Screw that. Taken seriously, it is, to use your word, Skeptifem, “shit”.

Sadly, the incorrect reading seemed just as plausible to me.

Killing the guy is too quick and too easy.
Prison, where his every action will be controlled, and where his entire life will be decided upon by others. . . it’s not really revenge, but at least he’ll be away from where he can harm others. For a time. If convicted. I’m talking myself back around to that summary execution again, so I’ll shut up now.

What people do in consenting D/s relationships is NOTHING like what this asshole performed upon his wife. Even in a TPE (Total Power Exchange, slave/master) relationship, in the end the submissive/slave holds the cards. Even vaguely insinuating it is the same “shit” is highly fucking insulting.

    Thank you.

Yes, of course there is abuse in the BDSM “community,” as there is in greater society. BDSM isn’t inherently abusive, regardless of what certain radfems claim. The comparison is not only insulting to people in BDSM but trivializing of this horrifying incident.

On another note, I see Evader remains clueless.

    @Evader

The fact that prisoners face repeated rape is only the most grotesque failing of our seriously flawed prison system.

The fact that you would suggest that is an appropriate punishment for anybody is repugnant.

    That is really strange!!

why did he keep the key in his socks? and why did he have both keys in the socks? did he do one and one or carry both in the same sock?

    very odd behavior that…

    With HappiestSadist.

Have the piercings myself. Have worn a lock in them even (what? oh, right, like if you had these cool toys you wouldn’t do stupid shit like that with them once in a while).

And still want to clop this guy copiously around the chops.

    kristinc, now with added ventilation

Also, based on my relatively brief experience with one professionally done set of piercings that didn’t heal correctly and had to be removed, I wonder what kind of discomfort and possibly disfigurement this poor woman has had to live with for years from his nasty ass “drilling” and full-time locks.
