She was brutally gangraped, tortured, mutilated and murdered. Don’t say that she ‘died peacefully’.

Dr. Kelvin Loh, the chief executive of Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore, said the Indian gang rape victim who was brought to Singapore, ‘died peacefully’. How could she die ‘peacefully’? She was only 23, her dreams to work as a paramedic or a physiotherapist did not come true. Her whole future was ahead of her, she was supposed to live her life, but she was brutally gang raped, tortured, mutilated and murdered. There is no ‘peace’ in it.

A 23-year-old gang-rape victim died. A 17-year-old gang-rape victim committed suicide other day. Thousands of rape and gang-rape survivors are ashamed of being raped. They live in a male dominated society where men are megalomaniac and misogynists, and it is considered ‘manly’ to terrorize and torture women, half of their population.

The world now knows about a gang-raped woman who died today. The world does not know about millions of women who get oppressed, harassed, abused, tortured, trafficked, burned, raped, gang-raped,murdered everyday. Here women hardly get any opportunity to live peacefully or die peacefully.

Yesterday I went out in the evening and in a tea-store I went through one Bengali newspaper. I read an article, it was all non-sense, it blamed women for being raped…….The only Bengali newspaper I love to read is “Ey Samay” by Time of India group.

    Taslima, have you seen this:

    http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/12/27/italian-priests-christmas-flyer-women-incite-violence-with-cold-dinners/

“The fact is that women are increasingly provocative, they become arrogant, they believe themselves to be self-sufficient and end up exacerbating the situation,” Corsi added. “Children are abandoned to their own devices, homes are dirty, meals are cold or fast food, clothes are filthy.”

He later added fuel to the fire by suggesting an Italian reporter must be gay if he wasn’t enticed by a picture of a nude woman.

They most likely mean that she died “quietly” because they would have given her such large doses of pain meds and sedatives. Silencing her pain cannot honestly be called “peaceful”.

Dying while unconscious, drugged into oblivion is not the same thing as “dying peacefully”.

This particular day leaves me lost for words. But I did at least write to the Lions Clubs about that ghastly victim-blaming woman.

I find some of the social media comments that I have seen on the Delhi gang rape very disturbing. Many seem to think that increased violence by the police/judicial system a ready made solution to the problem. The fact is that in a corrupt society rapists with the right connections, and access to money will be able to buy their way out of
trouble. Worse still, moral panic over some cases will cause the police to arrest and charge a totally innocent person, and torture a confession, and satisfy the public’s lust for retribution..

    Taslima,
Respectfully, we physicians in the west (at least in Canada) say that “dying peacefully” can sometime mean “clinically sedated and with anaesthesia.”

I am not trying to detract from the importance of the last gasps of her dying breaths, but only that sometimes we clinicians say these things publicly and to families to help reduce the pain felt by those close to the vistim. As much as we also suffer when we see our patient’s lives brutally and senselessly taken from those that love them, we recognize that we also have a duty to the families and friends to ensure comfort and minimize their pain because we cannot always fully understand the suffering of the patient, (and most assuredly, can never do so).

Think of it this way: If you had a patient who was brutally mangled, beaten with iron rods, raped, tossed from a moving vehicle and left to die, would you report to the families and in public that their daughter died in horrific and unconscionable pain and suffering? Even if they had died before and been resuscitated, and, as they lay, unable to utter a phrase beyond the words “I want to die” (I certainly hear this phrase a couple times a year, Almost on a monthly basis, and have, for the last nine years), would you say that their daughter passed away peacefully, without any pain, solely for the comfort of the now-grieving famiiy that now suffers in silenece.

A living, thinking, empathetic and wholly living human beings could not bear to hear that their daughter (or any loved one) endured hours upon days upon weeks of pain and suffering, therefore, we sometimes, admittedly, lie to the families of patients, simply to provide a false comfort that their loved one did not suffer. We are not perfect by any means, but I argue that our hearts are most certainly in the right places.

As an aside, I really do hope that in her terminal moments, the doctors were more than generous to provide her adequate anaesthetic and sedatives to ease her pain. Nothing can hurt her now,

      Thank you for that.

As gutwrenching as it is to read about events like this, it’s important to remember that not everyone involved is a bad guy. Just because words were uttered that don’t align with a call to arms does not mean they aren’t needed by someone – if everyone is screaming for blood, then who’s left to whisper for peace?

I hope change comes and I hope those words “died peacefully” did bring some peace to her family.
