feels like choosing an american pope was a signal they are willing to play ball with our fascists. not paying close enough attention to know this particular pedo protector’s politics so i could be wrong.

@Bébé:
Given this guy was the Cardinal who openly told JD Vance that Vance was wrong about his ‘order of love’ hierarchy, I’d say they weren’t selecting him to cozy up to the Trump White House. Also, he’s biracial and spent much of his time as a priest in Peru.
The impression I got from other sites that have been talking about this more is that while he wasn’t the most progressive of the likely candidates (that would have been the Filipino, and if you think hardline Catholics are pissed about an American pope, they’d be completely blowing their tops over a Filipino), nor was he the ‘safest’ in terms of not annoying the fascists (that would have been the Italian); he was probably second most progressive on the list of half a dozen or so people who actually had a chance.
Of course, limiting the list to ‘people who had a chance’ throws out many of the most progressive members at the start; this is the Catholic Church, after all. So, overall, nothing earth-shaking in the selection, but at least they don’t appear to be actively trying to get worse.

It’s fun to watch the MAGAts lose it, especially those who also claim to be Christian. Far right fundies are nothing if not anti-Catholic; and Leo’s post about Vance will be yet more evidence for them to think that the pope is the anti-Christ. 😎
that’s good to hear at least. that it coulda been worse.

As Trump is using three medicines for cardiovascular issues, I hope this pope will drive up his blood pressure into the red zone.
If he wants peace and quiet, he is free to step down and hand over the sinking ship to Vance, aka The Coachlover, aka the guy who *thinks* he knows catholic theology but fails the tests.

Imagining how good a pope is going to be is always going to be relative at best. It’s like going to the zoo and trying to identify the most cuddly rhinoceros. After all, in order to be in the running you have to be Catholic, and pretty well up in the ranks too, very much a part of the system. The ones most of us would like aren’t going to be in the pool. The best you can hope for here is someone who largely limits his espousal of utter nonsense to that of his Church. If he turns out to be a good pope as far as popes are concerned, that’s as much as you’ll get. So though I have no intention ever of believing any of the nonsense the Church promotes,I hope he manages to accomplish some good outside of the Church, because a good thing is a good thing whoever does it.
