Zoom backgrounds

In these days of Zoom meetings, I have seen people exploit the Zoom feature that allows you to use their stock backgrounds and also allows you to create your own to create the most exotic and even bizarre backgrounds. I myself, being the old fuddy-duddy that I am, use just the boring but real background of my living room.

I’m trying to teach on goggle meet, and kids keep putting on backgrounds despite being told not to. Those eat bandwidth and throttle the connection, and then the kids say “Teacher, I didn’t hear you!” And they never learn. The very next class, they turn it on again.

I haven’t done online meetings from home. I doubt I’ll appear on the FtB event on the weekend (at 5am here), but if I do, I’ll have a blank white wall behind me.

Don’t know the specifics of the encoding Zoom uses, but streaming video is usually compressed so only the parts of the image that changes between frames is sent, with periodic resets to resynchronise. Which means a static background image should not impose a particular load, if using that method.
