It is a vulture, one of the “old world” species (African or Eurasian). Specifically, I think it’s a Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus), but am not sure.
I don’t know if they deliberately picked a species Sam would never possibly see in NY as I kind of inside “birder joke,”* or if they just grabbed a nasty-looking critter from the internet at random. (I suspect the latter).
