Also: most Americans don’t realize that what they think are the 10 commandments were actually written by Cecil B. DeMille -- an effete elite hollywood liberal.
Actually, the First Commandment acknowledges there are other gods for other people.
Each tribe had their own, Yahweh was the god of the Israelites, and it was to them that the Commandments applied.
John Morales: also (in the usual translation*) it does rather imply that you can worship them as long as he comes first.

Then there’s the problem of the other 603 commandments…

It says explicitly: ‘thou shalt not bow down unto them, nor serve them; for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate Me; and showing mercy unto the thousandth generation of them that love Me and keep My commandments.’
(And John Morales: It is the second commandment. At least the way Jews count them. The first being ‘I am the LORD thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.’ Of course all of this is after several commandments were already given along the way in any case.)
