It’s happened

My voice is totally gone, except as a raspy whisper that frequently cracks and can only make shushing noises. That’s the bad news.

The good news is that none of my students have stopped by to ask questions! I guess I have taught them superbly well, or possibly they are terrified of the old man who keeps pushing more facts and formulas at them.

I’ll hang out in my office a while longer, just in case. I am drinking lots of honey lemon ginseng tea with big spoonfuls of honey. Also, tomorrow I’m just giving this exam and teaching a lab which should give me another day to recover.

In the old days Swedish apotecharies would provide a flask with a red warning triangle (opiate derivative component) if an MD had signed a receipt. It was marvellius for coughing and sore throats.

    Try sipping some distilled water.
    I hear it’s a powerful homeopathic cure.
Just don’t take too much, and overdose.

    I think you are mistaken.
The Universe is definitely malicious and it speaks all of the languages that you don’t.

Then you should retire only after your 110 birthday cake. Not necessarily related to your actual age, but never celebrate any of those on different dates, nor more than once a year,

I recently had a bad cold. I became addicted to Hall’s eucalyptus – menthol cough drops. Much recommended.

“I used to think that it was awful that life was so unfair. Then I thought, wouldn’t it be much worse if life were fair, and all the terrible things that happen to us come because we actually deserve them? So, now I take great comfort in the general hostility and unfairness of the universe.”

The universe is vast and uncaring, but not inherently malicious. It does, however, allow for the occasional localized sprouting of malice, as exemplified by blots on the landscape like Silentbob.

    Aah, yes,

“Ivanova is always right. I will listen to Ivanova. I will not ignore Ivanova’s recommendations. Ivanova is God. And if this ever happens again, Ivanova will personally rip your lungs out. Babylon Control out. ”
