Walking through crabapple alley, I noticed a monarch slumming it.
I guess even royalty likes to sample the seamy side of life now and then. The usual inhabitants here look like this:

Might be a Viceroy.
It indeed does look like a Viceroy with that thin black line going across its hind wings.
yeah, I think it’s a viceroy. the black line on the lower hind wings is a viceroy marking.
The butterfly looks a bit red…
The butterfly is 100% a Viceroy (Limenitis archippus). I’ve seen several of them this year. I’ve never seen a Monarch on the ground drinking hooch, it is beneath them and would sully their reputation.
