Here’s a fairly typical view of what I see when I walk into my office every morning.
The pink thing is a knitted octopus tied to a leather strap, and it’s very, very important. It is the evil cat’s one toy, the one thing she has fixated on since we first adopted her. She often talks to it. It’s weird: she will yowl and babble and have long conversations with it. Some nights I’ll be sleeping in my bed and wake up to hear these eerie noises in the living room or kitchen or wherever she has dragged her little pink pal — they’re more than just “meows,” they have a kind of grammar and structure and contain sounds we don’t hear from her in any other context.
I should probably record it sometime, because I think we’re actually hearing the dark tongue of Hell.

We have a 15 year old – our “sweet baby girl”. She has some small pet mice that we keep downstairs, and almost every night she brings us several and leaves them either on our bed or on the bedroom floor. This is accompanied as she comes up the stairs by what we consider her “music” – very loud yowls and other sounds that sound like she is talking to either the mouse or us. And after dropping the mouse she always comes and cuddles with me, no matter the time of night. The only downside is that I have to get in a specific position for her to cuddle, otherwise she stands on top of me and waits patiently until I cooperate.
It is Old Enochian and it isn’t a language suitable for human throats anyway.
Which is just as well.
It has limited utility these days and is all too often used to summon extra-dimensional beings from beyond our time and space.
And no, whatever you do, don’t record it.
It’s a cat thing. You wouldn’t understand.

My wife speaks cat. She is a cat attractor. Tiny, a stray cat, found her a few years ago, and subsequently adopted us. She and Tiny frequently have long conversations. I think they mostly talk about food. When we were first together we would walk down a street in our neighborhood, Cole Valley, and cats would come out to greet her. There was one in particular who would always come out to say hi and complain about the food.
Aww, Lil’ Cthulhu is hungry. Your soul will make his tummy happy!
Awww!! <3
Very cute
OUr dog also has only one toy that he likes: whichever any other dog is playing with

“Listen to me
Forget despondencies,
Listen, remember the blue cliffs
Find a new road forward every day
How you loved to climb
Turn the cat into an eagle today
(morning of mine)
To fly off the map
(morning of mine)
If youre going to play with your future
(morning of mine)
Let it be from me”

I know the cat is not your ‘best buddy’. But it is a lot less evil than the magats, xitan terrorists and plutocrats running this dying nation.
My cat has a collection of small furry toys. She moves them around the house. Sometimes they surround her in one of her cat beds. Sometimes she has them lined up near her feeding bowl or near the “potty box”.
I swear she is pretending that these are her kittens and that she is teaching them.
The very, very special one is a cylinder wrapped in twine with a stuffed bunny head and tail end sticking out of the cylinder.
She carries this one around while performing her cat yowling and talking. We call it “Bunny Baby”.
Sometimes Bunny Baby appears in either my recliner or my husband’s favorite spot on the couch.
My cat, Princess Leia, seems to want to mother her toys. She’s never had kittens, since I’ve had her since she was four weeks old. I’m wondering whether these behaviors are inherent to female cats, since my husband’s big male Maine Coon can’t be bothered with fuzzy toys. He’s more intent on sleeping or doing his best to destroy the cat tree or the toys that my husband brings out at playtime.
Our cat weighs around 3.5 kg, has the usual cat body and padded feet.
She slinks around, usually, as expected. She knows how to silently stalk.
But when she is peeved or bored, she somehow manages to stomp around.
Quite the mystery.
@magistramarla, # 14: Yes, female cats can be very maternal with their toys. (^. .^)~

There’s a guy that has a YouTube channel that features his talking pit bull and a younger sibling. Being younger, this sibling is quick in running away when his older brother comes to try and take the toy. This leads him to go complain to his owner who tries to make the other dog share the toy (yeah, right!) or he’ll give the dog the exact same toy which he won’t take because it has to be the one his brother has. Cute as hell.
I would have thought PZ of all people would have recognised when someone’s summoning Cthulhu.

My cat, Sunshine, also has a favourite toy – in her case a fluffy catnip-filled spider called Octavius. Well, he started out as Octavius: we have to change it as she pulls the legs of him. He’s down to Tertius by now.
The fact that it’s not just a favorite toy, but a knitted pink octopus on a leather strap that she deliberately drags around the house, then sits there yowling and having what sounds like structured conversations with it, makes this wonderfully unsettling. I’d definitely record it-if only to determine whether she’s developing a new language or simply negotiating directly with the underworld.
