The conservatives are eating their own! And it’s all over food prices.
It started when a college student involved with Turning Point USA complained that a burrito costs $20, NJ.com reported. Turning Point USA spokesperson Andrew Kolvet shared the complaint online, saying the “lived experience is the same: it just feels like basic things cost too much.”
Washington Post columnist Marc Thiessen dismissed the gripe. “Cry me a river,” Thiessen wrote. “The burritos in the college cafeteria are included in your meal plan.”
That drew a sharp response from Vice President JD Vance, who wrote that Thiessen had “never missed a burrito,” according to NJ.com.
Crenshaw weighed in later on Thursday with an attack on food insecurity.
“Stop whining, get a job, eat Ramen like the rest of us did in college, on a budget with 4 roommates,” Crenshaw sneered on X, wading into the fight.
He went further, asking whether critics of rising food prices were “a communist” or “an American adult male capable of handling his own s—.”
The backlash from the right was swift.
“The Republican Party is still dominated by traitors who got rich off of insider trading but mock you for thinking that you should be able to eat meat in a first world country,” conservative commentator Auron MacIntyre wrote on X.
They’ve all got guns. Maybe they should use them on each other?
I do have to mention that having a meal plan is expensive — you’re not getting free burritos in college. Also, our students are on a budget, living in small dorm rooms and getting by on the high-starch diets they’re fed in the cafeteria, and occasionally splurging by going out to Taco John’s, where a burrito will set you back about $8, which is still overpriced, but I think the TPUSA goon was probably getting a fancy high-end burrito in California.
Now I’m craving a burrito, but this week we’re getting by with a big pot of bean soup. You know, beans and rice are still the economical way to get a healthy diet, and tossing them onto a tortilla with a little cheese, some spices, and a splash of hot sauce is a tasty way to survive. But beans and rice are also going up in price. Telling people to consume a less expensive version of what they want while even the cheap stuff is more expensive than it was last week does not address the problem.
Hey, I’ve got tortillas, I got beans, I got hot sauce, I got cheese. I think I’ll fix something to snack on while watching the spectacle of conservatives snarling at each other.

I live in Long Beach (Los Angeles County).
Burrito prices within a kilometer:
Sonoratown: $13 (Highly rated)
Leo’s: $11.10 (Local’s favorite, $3 off on tuesdays and fridays)
Buen Provecho: $19 (Bougie joint)
Various Trucks: $8-$15
So, yeah, you can spend almost $20, but you have to try pretty hard.
They could always supplement their diets by eating the rich.
One of the meals I sometimes eat is some sort of bean mixed with packaged chicken with some brown and wild rice mixed in. Not sure off the top of my head how that prices out. Tasty and high in both fiber and protein.
I would like to personally thank the millennials for popularizing avocado toast. I love the stuff. Made at home it’s probably not too expensive. But it became the thing for boomers to bludgeon millennials with for whatever reason. Healthier than coffee drinks with 100g+ added sugar. Love me some avocado toast, the ultimate anti-carnivore side.

People are so out of touch with the effects of Trumpflation. It’s ridiculous how much stuff costs. As long as they get their land war in Iran I guess it’s worth it to crater the economy and watch poor people suffer.
And ramen noodles? Seriously? Yeah we want college students subsisting on cheap over processed ramen alongside macaroni and “cheese” product. Feed the kids right dammit!
Rich people don’t understand the value of a dollar.
It’s only going to get more fun watching Trumplandia as inflation bites harder and more conservatives realize you can’t eat propaganda.
Rice and beans is a great meal. Complete protein, high fiber, and super cheap. My favorite is the pre-seasoned yellow rice mix, with black beans and optionally some good salsa on top. I can eat that for lunch any day, and I often do, although I can afford fancier things.
Rolled oats makes for another nutritious, filling, inexpensive meal. Microwaved or cooked on the stovetop until soft, with a splash of whole milk, a drizzle of maple syrup or a bit of brown sugar mixed in. With fresh blueberries or any sliced fruit added in, it’s a great breakfast.
I’m a weirdo when it comes to food. When I took a class in British Guyana, the professor said that when we left we’d be craving pizza and hamburgers. Me? Not so much. Hanging with the local tribe in the backcountry and eating beans and rice, homemade bread, and bananas straight off the tree was exactly my speed. (Plus, learning about the culture of a group that lived way off the beaten path in a rainforest? What could be better!) These respondents are deliberately missing the point.
$20 for a burrito is high.
I just checked at Taco Bell and a burrito is $8.52.
For the record, I never have eaten at Taco Bell but it is a national chain.
This is still seems high.
Be aware: Fresh jalapeños recalled due to salmonella outbreak in 27 states, including Texas
The basic principle of the expensive burrito is however, very true.
Inflation is part of our common lived experience these days.
I go grocery shopping about once a week, usually at a deep discount place and buy more or less the same things each time.
Everything has gone up. Everything has gone up a lot.
To take one simple example, a large bag of bird seed food for the outdoor feeder was $10 last year.
I just checked online and this year it is $12.70. And I’m almost out of bird food.
It is the same with everything, bread, lentils, gasoline, etc..
I’d be angry at the GOP if it would do any good.
Vote them out in the mid term elections instead.
I only recently started eating avocado toast. I guess it has a bit of a history relevant here to intergenerational finger wagging and mockery:
It has happened before and will happen again.
Avocado toast goes back to when my parents were born:

I eat it unironically.
O Noez, Communism is teh Evil. Condemn all communists, such as…
Government Ownership Stakes in Companies Becoming Routine Under Trump
Cartomancer got here first, that was my immediate thought.
A burrito from the place named after a smoked dried jalapeno, with the most-expensive protein option and adding on guacamole and a drink, plus sales tax, is right around $20. So we can infer that it wasn’t a fast-food burrito… which says something about the worldview of that particular TPUSA twerp. If he thinks that monstrosity — calorie count just about equal to an adult woman’s recommended daily intake, so perhaps 2/3 of a day for a college woman and half for a college man† — is what people think of when they say “burrito,” he hasn’t been to the freezer case at a grocery/convenience store lately, where a 5-pack of frozen next-step-up-from-generic burritos is about $7.
Raven, pleasepleaseplease don’t test the Taco Bell diet, soon to be a TikTok weight-loss fad near you. Although if it was Taco Bell, blaming the supplier of the lettuce may be a bit excessive (given that supplier’s history, maybe not, too) — it’s far more likely that the chihuahua wasn’t washing his paws while preparing the burritos.
† Making no assumptions that those are the only issues in reality, it’s just that they’re the only published guidelines from a reputable source: male, female.
at Chipotle or Qdoba – ‘fast food’ but better than taco bell, a burrito is $13-15+, add tax, a beverage and you’ll be asked if you want to tip! – $20+ is not atypical for a lunch per person. Heck I’ve noticed that two egg breakfasts at the local diner are 2x + what they cost pre-covid (now $14-15 + tip)
eating out is expensive, groceries are expensive. (so is tuition, meal plans, health care, insurance, gasoline, cars, housing, utilities etc etc.) Prices are rising faster than wages- why would anyone criticize someone else – shame them – for pointing out how unaffordable things have become? Especially a POS like JDVance who sold his soul to a billionaire plutocrat – now living off subsidies from oligarchs (and is formerly a hilbilly living off of government subsidies) NO ONE ‘pulls themselves up by their own bootstraps’ the concept is a myth (and the term originates as a joke!)
How did anyone find an $8 burrito at Taco Bell? $1.49 for a Bean & Rice Burrito and $4.19 for a “Beefy 5-layer burrito” ’round these parts. Even a fancy-schmancy “Cantina Chicken Buritto” is only $6.49. Is because I live in a rust belt town in the midwest rather than a coast?
In college I worked out it was cheaper to eat out for every meal at the restaurants nearby than to get a meal plan — never mind if I would cook for myself. I figured out what would work to get me off meal plan, and worked to achieve that.
The university responded to the fact that me and apparently enough other people were figuring this out by making it harder to get off meal plan.
cartomancer @ # 2: … eating the rich.
Jaws @ # 12: … Cartomancer got here first…
What else could our esteemed host have meant by the first ‘graf following that lengthy quote, anyway?
He’s already provided us with a method for acquiring low-cost high-protein meals in his previous post!
Food fight!
Now I want a burrito too, only the GLP-1 has tricked my body into thinking my stomach is full.
I shouldn’t complain though. I’ve lost 70lbs since I started on Zepbound in January.
Red-on-red fightingt Your neighboring state had a Trump-approved candidate, a Navy veteran born in USA and MAGA all the way. But there was a problem. He had – gasp! – an arab name!!!
So he was rejected in the primary election by MAGA peple who know all ayrubs are terrerrists (and, presumably all latinos are lazy and all jews greedy).
Akira MacKenzie @ 18
I would need that, but was scared of side effects that may include nausea and vomiting.
Billionaires won’t be happy until we’re eating nothing but nutrient paste and “real food” becomes a luxury.
@ 20
I had some very mild nausea a couple of times when I first started, but it passed quickly.
“Hey, I’ve got tortillas, I got beans, I got hot sauce, I got cheese. I think I’ll fix something to snack on while watching the spectacle of conservatives snarling at each other.”
Nah, sell them to the conservatives at $20 each.
“asking whether critics of rising food prices were “a communist” or “an American adult male capable of handling his own s—.””
Guys, is it feminine to want food?
dangerousbeans @24
Which “guys” are you referring to?
[meta]
chigau, it is snark. It refers to “an American adult male capable of handling his own s—.”, which was the setup.
“Let them eat cake!”
Someone had to say it…
I feel I should point out that past early childhood, handling your own shit is generally considered a sign of psychiatric illness.
Who knew that the solution for “Eggs are so expensive” was make everything so expensive so that you dont notice that eggs are expensive.
@ ^ Deepak Shetty : Trump?
Appalling, staggering thing is that his cult will still buy it.
If theycan afford it.
Oh and they’ll blame Biden somehow if they can’t.
I keep wondering; how long until Soylent Green becomes reality?
