Don’t worry about the next pandemic

There is a plan. The FBI will put together a manhunt to catch the people who cause it!

As we read and process reports of a new COVID strain emerging, | want you to know that we are actively investigating, in multiple field offices, the cover-up of the origin of the COVID virus, along with associated matters requiring our attention. You deserve answers.

Yeah, Dan Bongino. Get a crack team of G-men together, give ’em tommy guns, and send them out there to track down, and arrest or kill, the gang responsible for genetic drift. That’s how authoritarian brains work.

Again with the debunked rubbish of a supposed cover-up too when we know the main person covering up the real seriousness of COVID was Trump…

What’s the bet they use this to whip up more xenophobia and bigotry too?

  2. John Watts says

Oh, good grief. Trump and Musk cut funding to the CDC, NIH, HHS and now will not fund future Moderna mRNA vaccines. But, we’ve got Bongino on the trail of the origin of the COVID-19 virus. I realize Trump is desperate to somehow rewrite the history of his pandemic response, and place the blame on China, but five years later, who gives a damn if it came from a Wuhan animal market or a virology lab leak? What we really need going forward, instead of this absurd Pink Panther sleuthing, are safe and effective vaccines. I really, really hate this government.

  3. seversky says

And will we hear anything from conspiracy nuts like Bongino if they find no evidence of a conspiracy? Or will they just manufacture some to keep the MAGAts happy?

  4. rorschach says

It’s really annoying that the dumbest people on the planet, and the worst people, need the lab hypothesis to be true to justify their actions (or inactions). Of course it was a lab leak, like the most recent Marburg outbreak, like the 1977 flu, take your pick, but numpties and conspiracy theorists buying into this to further their own deranged agendas makes it really hard to argue the case.
As to the new Covid variants, we had 8 really good months, but now 2 new variants have emerged that will become dominant, and all the goodies are there, increased immune invasion, ACE2 affinity off the charts. “Razor blade throat” seems to be a prominent feature (this means laryngitis btw), enjoy!
At the same time, the Trump admin has just cancelled a 600 million contract with Moderna to develop flu vaccines, this includes bird flu. I mean, what could possibly go wrong.

  5. says

And they’re gonna do what, exactly? Nuke Wuhan? Send SEAL teams to take out a few mid-level Chinese officials in China? I’m sure that’ll go over real well…

Of course it was a lab leak…

And “of course” you have evidence of this, right?

  6. HidariMak says

I’m sure that those Tommy guns will really come in handy, when one of the senior MAGA heads like the Cheeto Mussolini or Marj Trainwreck Greene get COVID. “Here’s a reporter who was seen coughing once a month before seeing Trump.” “We found someone who once said something negative about Dear Leader, so they likely want him dead”. “This news organization isn’t sufficiently loyal. Remember that the bullets are free, and you have zero accountability in using them.”

HHS cancels nearly $600 million Moderna contract on vaccines for flu pandemics
The decision will be seen as a significant blow to pandemic preparedness
By Helen Branswell and Matthew Herper May 28, 2025

The Department of Health and Human Services has notified Moderna that it is canceling a nearly $600 million contract with the company to develop, test, and license vaccines for flu subtypes that could trigger future pandemics, including the dangerous H5N1 bird flu virus.

Though the possibility of the cancellation had been anticipated — the new leadership at HHS told the company in February that it was reviewing the contract, signed with the Biden administration — the move is being seen as a significant blow to the country’s capacity to respond to pandemic influenza.

No other flu vaccine production approach can produce doses with the speed of the messenger RNA platform used by Moderna and other companies that work with mRNA.
But the vaccine platform is viewed with deep suspicion by health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and his political base. Continues.

Another day, another stupid atrocity from the Trump regime.

Yeah, this totally wrecks our ability to repond to the next pandemics.

There are major advantages to the mRNA vaccines.
.1. They are very fast to design and make.
You just need a DNA or RNA sequence which takes a few days.

.2. They work very well, usually better than protein based vaccines.

The Chinese and Russian vaccines were protein based and they had a lot of trouble because they didn’t work very well.
One estimate I saw was that two doses of the Moderna and Pfizer mRNA vaccines were equal to 3 doses of the Chinese vaccines.
This matters a lot because followup drops off a lot as the number of required doses goes up.
A lot of people who got the first dose don’t keep going to the third dose.

There is a good possibility that I’m still alive because of the Covid-19 virus mRNA vaccines. I’ve got multiple risk factors and have had 5 doses so far, two plus the updates.
I also knew a few people who died before the vaccines became available and have seen two people in the last year or so die from Long Covid complications.

Let’s just say he has his ups and downs, flirting with fame at times and getting way ahead of himself and facts. As to Tamiflu, from the last studies I read, its efficacy against bird flu is not assured at all.

How can one emperor have no clothes so many times?

Because the news media has been cowed into submission. Paramount just offered a $15 million bribe to Trump (to settle a lawsuit they would win easily) and he immediately rejected it and says he needs $25 million before he’ll approve their merger with Skydance

Odds of them paying up? 100%.

five years later, who gives a damn if it came from a Wuhan animal market or a virology lab leak? – John Watts@3

It’s important because if we knew where it came from and how it got to the Wuhan market (which certainly had a role in spreading it) that could tell us a lot about how to guard against future bat coronavirus threats, if nothing else – note that Covid was the third such outbreak, after the original SARS, and MERS. The Chinese authorities, BTW, still deny that it originated in China at all, claiming that it came into the country on frozen food packaging. But Bongino’s aim is probably to pin the blame on Anthony Fauci.

Dug through my Steam library for a bit and discovered Plague, Inc. has an update to bring the game world into 2025. I have a suspicion that America’s been made much easier to infect and much less effective in contributing to developing cures.

I’m not going to play to find out. Too depressing.

How would their response to the pandemic have been different once the virus had made it into the US if it came from a lab leak as opposed to the prevailing wisdom at the time?

If true one would hope RFK Jr (embarrassment to his dad’s memory and family) and Oz personally drive the birds to Florida in a single enclosure vehicle without any precautions, given germ theory is false, and both contract bird flu and fucking die horribly. Ironically then bird flu would have done us a solid per public health outlook.

I do feel sorry for the ostriches having to hear RFK Jr and Oz quack continuously during the entire journey. That will rile them up surely.

Ostriches are dangerous enough without carrying disease so maybe they can do other nasty things to the hapless pair of Trump appointees who are wrecking our public health system. And if so I hope there’s footage so Casual Geographic could show it and comment comically on the carnage.

So old-fashioned! In about two weeks, we’ll have orbiting space lasers (the good white Christian cis-het kind) to zap them* from within the Golden Dome, funded by imaginary trillion-dollar deals from the Persian Arabian Gulf, for just such purposes.

Because the news media has been cowed into submission.

    Not quite.

It’s because the billionaires who own the news media support what Trump is doing. They sponsor political campaigns; and in return, they get offered the chance to write a paragraph or two in a manifesto.

The media are not “the fourth estate, fighting the establishment on behalf of readers”. The media are the establishment, and have been for a long time now. They are not on your side.
