They make a wonderful sound like a giant mosquito. A smaller crane fly species has shown up at the window here in the past week. Speaking of noisy non-cicada insects, the Maybeetles (Junebugs?) are just starting to come out and loudly buzz against the window at night. Also the gnats and biting flies are starting to emerge as well, unfortunately.

We have ample numbers of those guarding our doors and the corners of the ceiling. Apparently they are known as mosquitoe hawks around here.
Impressive invertebrate & good photo of it but I reckon a guard dog would do a better job! ;-)
Still much quieter than any mozzie I’m sure.. I think.
But diptera ~wise should it be the mayflies month? If they can manage to live that long?
W apologies for using up to many one liners..
That’s shouldn’t it be mayfluies month?
Becoz heavebn forfend I manage a comment without some siorta stuff up. Sigh.
How big is it?
Leg span is about 10cm.
It needs bigger poison glands to stand guard.
