Thing is there are people that know their zone of ignorance and respect it by staying outside on their comemnts and actions and then there’s too many people that, well, don’t..

Anyway, what’s supposed to be outside that zone?
Duncsays
The Zone of Utter Ignorance is the (presumably infinite) blue area outside all of the circles.
hemidactylussays
Was the represented to convey relative amounts or just that these zones, areas, etc. supposedly exist? Speculation, imagination and ignorance might blend more.

There is actually a fractal mixing pattern, like when you pour milk into coffee.
And depending of where you live, people in the outermost zone might be disproportionally likely to end up in a position of power.
Also, a single individual might be an expert in one or two areas but utterly lost in others so the diagram should be multi-dimensional.

None of us understand this diagram about the limits of understanding. Does this diagram include itself?

lumipuna @ 2, the Twilight Zone, obviously.
Dunc @ 3, spot on! That zone encompasses most of the universe.
birgerjohansson @ 5, I don’t recall fractal math being involved in Rayleigh–Taylor instabilities or Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities. ;)
Although, for milk into coffee, it’d be far more the former than the latter due to viscosity differences between milk and coffee.
The math is deceptively simple, right until you go and try to model it, doing so manually resulting in one beginning to bark at telephone poles afterward.

Fox News, fundie xians, the GOP, Joe Rogan, antivaxxers, and the right wingnut lunatic fringes of the internet.
Beyond the Zone Of Utter Ignorance is the Outer Limits of Actively Being Completely Wrong.

Perhaps the region beyond the Zone of Utter Ignorance, which is huge, should be called the Zone of Willful Ignorance, which is limitless. That zone encompasses Fox, fundies and the host of other religious delusionals not specifically fundies, the GOP (and some Dems a la Manchin), Rogan, anti-vaxxers, right wing nut lunatics, and billionaires who think it’s in their financial best interest to destroy democracy and, while they’re at it, human life on the planet…for example these guys: Texas fracking billionaire brothers fuel rightwing media with millions of dollars.
The English language needs an expression for the state beyond willful ignorance. Something like, “You can have my ignorance when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers.”

Wait what? Expertise = yellow circle. General understanding = pale orange band. Vague knowledge = darker orange. Nebulous awareness = pink. Dubious speculation = lilac. Pure imagination = purple. Utter ignorance = everything else. Am I missing something? Because if not, it’s everyone else.

Needs to be a 3-dimensional diagram. As you age the Zone of Utter Ignorance expands exponentially inwards while the other zones all shrink.
