I always love RR covers, but this one is exceptional!

(That DuhSantis, though, christ what an asshole – I don’t think even Floridans deserve him).

Getting flashbacks to when I was a kid and “Parent Groups” were fighting hard against sex ed in public education. It was the middle of the AIDS epidemic and sex ed was an absolute necessity. Kids are gonna figure it out one way or another. Best get them prepared for it. BTW everyone thought I was gay in high school. Hell most people who I just met think I’m gay to this day. I’m not. Kids should be informed about sexuality from a NEUTRAL Viewpoint. Would have saved me a lot of trouble. Also a rape and a couple sexual assaults.

RR is a shining bright gay light in the darkness of our times. I just love him to death!

    Re: Autobot Silverwynde @ #4…
Much the same was said about Trump and look where that wound up. So much as I’d love to see deSantis fall on his face in an attempt to become president, I’d really rather he doesn’t run, lest the Trump supporters and those too dim to see through him put him in the Oval Office.

Naah, I am a confirmed bachelor, and I am straight in the most boring way imaginable. Call R R gay, if that is what he prefers.

Is there something in the Florida water? Their last two governors would belong in satirical horror comedy films.
I know all the people in retirement communities watch Fox News, but Tucker Carlson is doing his damndest to get them killed by Covid so there should be some demographic changes.

De Santis does not have the instinctive grifter skill of Trump. I hope he is too unappealing for the national scene.

  7. PaulBC says

birgerjohansson@11 It’s a bad idea to underestimate anyone, but I agree with your premise. One significant point about Trump is that he had his own TV show and had spent decades running a long con of presenting himself as an entrepreneurial genius (and a not a trust fund kid who would have done better putting daddy’s money into an indexed fund).

There really are many Americans who believe Trump is something special, not a fraud. Even many on the left consistently misidentify him as a “capitalist” instead of what he is, a mobster. (Yeah, I know many of my leftwing friends have trouble making the distinction–and so do those in Trump’s camp.)

Well, Trump is something special. I hate to agree with Scott Adams on anything other than the amusing nature of office life, but his theory of Trump as mass hypnotist has a certain appeal. I prefer to think of Trump as the pinball wizard of politics: ain’t got no distractions [like facts], plays by sense of smell.

DeSantis may have something going for him among Floridians but only time will tell (and I hope not) if he can take it on the road.

The past two Floriduh governors were Navy vets. Not sure what to make of that. Omicron Deathsantis was a JAG, so he’s skilled at framing issues. His press secretary Pushaw might be an escaped demon from Hell.

I would not misunderestimate his abilities to parlay his governorship, where he’s reveled in owning the libs, into a viable run for POTUS.

His move to berate students wearing masks and mock “COVID theater” might offend decent sensible people, but it plays well to “the base”. Never mind the 73000+ deaths on his watch swept under the rug.

The thing that might ultimately be enough to bring Florida’s governor down is if he gets into a big enough fight with Disney.

  10. Pierce R. Butler says

The deplorable DeSantis does have some new friends: Clarence & Ginni Thomas and Betsy DeVos.

He may seem a strictly-second-rater (he got to Congress by marrying a popular local newscaster in an obscure rural district and to the governorship by gluing himself to Trump), but he has the instincts of a hardcore dictator (e.g., suppressing county health department reports in favor of centralized/politicized state summaries very early in the pandemic, trying to take control of all Florida’s school boards’ coronavirus policies, etc, etc).

The only path that DeSantis has to the White House is over Trump’s dead body.

    Me, I’m rooting for fatalities.

I guess Ron grew tired of waiting for Covid to kill the poor and looking for ways to encourage suicide.

I’m curious as to what y’all think: if you had to choose between Trump winning another term and President DeSantis, which would be worse? I know, I know, this is one of those questions like “Would you rather lose an arm or a leg,” and we’d be pretty much doomed as a nation and as a species either way, but I can’t help it — as a human, when I watch a fight, I want to figure out which side to root for, even if I’m watching a fight between two carnivores as to which one gets to devour my spleen.
So which one is worse — Trump, malevolent and also a grifter and habitual liar, but quite extraordinarily stupid and easily distractible? Or DeSantis, malevolent but presumably of average intelligence and honesty for a Republican?

  14. PaulBC says

brucegee1962@21 I think Trump is so compromised that he’d be in less of a position to do damage. The worst effect would be seeming to vindicate the the January 6 insurrection, but DeSantis might have that effect as well. While it’s not a gamble I’d want to take either way, that weighs in favor of Trump.

DeSantis aside, anyone who consolidated Republican power would tip us into disaster. Conversely, the best a Democrat would do is delay the inevitable. We’re so screwed.

    @3

I’m afraid that’s exactly backward: Dysentery leads to, umm, not being full of it because it keeps running straight through without getting anything of substance from it… wait a minute, that describes Florida Governor-Man* all too well…

PZ should definitely avoid that superhero movie.
