I have harnessed the shadows that stride from world to world to sow death and madness. No new horror can be more terrible than the daily torture of the commonplace. HP Lovecraft
The evil that was Geocities and the banal, stultifying existence of MySpace both fell as a period foundational erosion led to an invisible instability and, ultimately, an unpredicted, immediate and catastrophic collapse.
We can only pray that the same forces are at work, hitherto unnoticed but nonetheless effective, on the foundations of Twitter and Facebook.

Social media is truly one of the latest waxen masks of Nyarlathotep; a seething churning mass of mindless digital chaos that spawns further madness and hate in the minds of those foolish fleshy-brained mortals who gaze too long into its abyss.

[snark] Eh, all white guys look the same. [/snark]
To Lovecraft, a meaningless, mechanical, and uncaring universe that human beings, with their naturally limited faculties, could never fully understand = UNSPEAKABLE HORROR. To a fair group of modern folk, myself included, it’s just the obvious.

social media as a concept is fine and kind of an extension of social interaction humans do all the time one of the defining characteristics of being human.
It is the monetization that is the source of the problems. Greed the lust for more and more money, how can we maximize our user base to make money. What ever the noble l idea was at the beginning that is clear not how it functions today. It is more a parasite than symbiont.

I can easily picture Lovecraft writing snobby opinion pieces like David Brooks or sharing speaking engagements with Sam Harris and Jordan Peterson.
