My nation stopped conscription because the cold war wasn’t. And also money. But then Putin started being classically Russian, and we started re-thinking whether the soviet threat was as over-and-done-with as we thought (spoiler: It really wasn’t). Thankfully (should be read in the most ironic way possible) the threat isn’t novel, so we can re-use our plans (as opposed to when Dubya threatened war(“You’re either with us or against us”), when the ‘whatif’ was “What if our long-time semi-allied nation declared war on us” was an actual thing to consider). But your idiot-in-charge has made the Russians bolder than they ever were during my life-time, and it worries me something fierce.

Apparently McCain said that Trump is approaching Watergate levels of lawlessness? How is it only approaching and not surpassing? The only reason Nixon didn’t get away with more is that he was so much more careful than Trump is.
To be fair, Dijon mustard and no ketchup is a bit odd for a burger, but less odd in Chicago than other places (see the various types of “Chicago style” hot dogs in the city). Still, that is squarely in the TMZ category of news; it is something interesting to a few celebrity watchers, but nobody else.

You know, I do feel pity for him as I doubt he ever feels good about himself for more than 2 minutes without someone singing his own praises to him. That doesn’t mean I have the slightest sympathy for anything he says or does.
I feel no pity for him; he brought this all on himself. The biggest silver lining of him being President is that it’s making him as miserable as most of the rest of us.
Honestly we might be headed to the most ideal situation in this presidency: If Trump becomes a severe lame duck and is deeply demoralized as the president but isn’t impeached, then we might be spared the worst of the republican onslaught, avoid a president pence, and maintain Trump as something to point at come election time.
Impeachment isn’t good because we’ll have president pence, and that would let the republicans enact all kinds of horrific things. But if trump can be turned into a demoralized wrench in the republican death machine, their impact on this nation could be mitigated.
The only advantage to impeachment is that pence would be better for foreign policy (in that he wouldn’t leak secrets to the Russians or turn our allies into enemies).

And it’s spreading. Yesterday the Washington Post reports that last year the House Majority Leader along with Ryan and other MoCs were recorded speculating that Trump was on the Russian parole, as well as one MoC. When they were confronted with this story by the Washington Post, they denied it happened…FAKE NEWS! When the Washington Post said they have a recording of the conversation, Ryan et al said they were just joking. Ha ha. So one lie, one lame excuse, and you’ve got a bunch of House Republicans you could throw on the cart.
As for Mike Pence, don’t forget how many times he lied during the VP debate. If he was the Christian he claims to be, he would spend the rest of his life praying for forgiveness for that one night, and nothing else. (I also think the “Flynn lied to Pence” narrative is a CYA story.)

Sadly, Trump is both horrible for war, poor people, women, and non-white people abroad. With the added benefit of being easily manipulated by foreign policies. Only difference between Trump and pence for foreign policy is Pence isn’t going to tell the Russians our secrets on a boast.

As I recall, the classic witch hunt targeted women, the elderly and the poor, didn’t require evidence, and resulted in the supposed witch being put to death. This guy (whom I’ve been calling “Trumpelthinskin,” by the way) has a serious persecution complex. He thought the job would be easy, and somehow convinced himself that not only did he win the popular vote (if you don’t count illegals, of course) and had a bigger turnout for his inauguration than Obama, he thinks he’s been successful to an unprecedented extent so far.
Yeah, poor little man.
As for handing the Russians classified info, he has the power to do that, but it doesn’t appear that he checked with anybody to find out if it was safe to do so. His National Security Advisor defends him by saying he couldn’t have divulged any sources or methods, because he didn’t know the source or methods. Which I guess is supposed to be comforting, right? Jeebus. At least one Republican congressman with a military background is questioning the wisdom of that.
You know there are more disasters to come. Among the things we know about Trumpelthinskin: he doesn’t think about shit, doesn’t learn from mistakes, and he “don’t know much about history.”

The cold war was more or less over but the US never realized it. Hilary Clinton did strike me as totally irrational in this area. She seemed to think Stalin was still in the Kremlin.
The USA double-crossed Russia on NATO expansion. They had verbally promised, in public IIRC, no NATO expansion into the Baltic states/Ukraine and reneged as it was not in the written agreement. For some strange reason Russians seem to expect one to keep publicly spoken verbal promises even if it is not notarized and signed in blood.
Unfortunately I don’t see what else Putin could have done but start being “classically Russian”. He could no longer trust the West especially the USA.
All this does not reduce the pressure on the Baltic states and other eastern European countries but may suggest why the pressure is there.
So, unfortunately I agree; the “Soviet Threat” is not over-and-done-with as the Russians must regard the USA as a threat whether it makes any sense or not. And this means eastern European countries especially the Baltic States are in a nasty situation.
Trump may get done but that only deals with a symptom. The US is full of people that voted for him and Pence.
Have to say, they are trying, real hard, to both play on people’s fears, and babble incoherently at the same time, among some of the talking heads, at least on the radio. Had the misfortune that my favorite cab service and driver (the guy is the only one in town that remembers who the heck I am, or where I live, instead of my having to scream over the cell phone at them, while they, “Try to find some place to stop, so they can write it down wrong.”) seems to like to, “listen to the crazies on radio, to see what they are saying.” Kind of makes me nervous, really. How much of that can you listen to, while driving, before it overpowers your will, and you start thinking it makes sense?
Anyway, the rant was how Trump was the only thing that would save the US from, apparently, liberals who are out to have a Bulshavic Revolution, while in cahoots with the 1%ers that want “global markets”, and, if they ever get their way they will start with killing True Americans ™, but have, up until now, and even when those damn liberals had control over the *entire* government, they somehow never managed to start this revolution, just, “Mess with companies, to undermine their ability to succeed.”, and that Trump will be shot, presumably by the left wing, Russian like, commies, half way through the new investigation, which is all made up anyway, just to do nothing but discredit him. And, that is just the stuff I remembered because they guy wasn’t half saying that Trump might be doing some things he didn’t like, but it was somehow a ploy, or.. something, to stop the much worse people out there, or.. something…
So… Err, I am confused, other than being against commies, are they for or against the 1%? And, how is any of the rest of that coherent either? Its like they are eating each other alive, to try to simultaneously claim that Trump is their best friend, a menace, their only hope, and their worst enemy, but.. if something happens, its… someone else that did it!!!
