As many people as ICE is abducting right now, where are they being sent? Because as diverse as Minneapolis is, even a lightning speed deportation can’t happen fast enough to dozens of nations around the world. Tons of Somalians in the US were born here. They don’t even have citizenship in Somalia.
If there isn’t a concentration camp, they probably have a dozen or more spread around the city in warehouses and railroad cars and shit. I have read the white people they arrest are beaten and abused but released in an average of 48 hours to make room for caging those with darker skin tones.
I’ve read Walz is not seeking reelection because of nazi death threats. If I didn’t have a family depending on me, man, I don’t know what the fuck I’d do, but … so easy to imagine making that blood flow. I have read of a number of cases of people from Country A (e.g. Central/South America) being deported to Country B (e.g. some African country that accepts money in exchange for taking in deportees) and have wondered the same thing–these deportees do not have citizenship in those countries and do not speak the language. The cruelty to the deportees is the point.
Another case I’ve been seeing in the news lately is an American citizen (born in the USA–not naturalized later) who was grabbed and moved to a number of locations around the country. Somehow she’s been able to speak to reporters, but she only speaks Spanish, which annoys me. When living in San Diego, I used to cross the border (this is when all you needed was a driver’s license as proof of ID) all the time with a friend to go shopping, etc., and most of the people living there spoke English, from “good enough to communicate with tourists” to “completely fluent”. I asked once and was told they got American tv and radio stations so everyone grew up hearing English. So, IMO, it takes a real effort to be born and raised in the USA–where they get tv and radio–and not be able to speak the language.

We then went to Puerto Rico, where we also lived for five years and spoke Spanish at school and in the community. Then to the Philippines for a couple of years, where you needed a working knowledge of Tagalog to keep from being kidnapped or just merely robbed or raped. We landed in Hawaii in the mid-1970s, coinciding with the renewed desire to teach the Hawaiian language and culture in schools, and informally we spoke Pidgin (a creole that’s a mix of Hawaiian, Japanese, Chinese, and Spanish with some English thrown in) with friends and neighbors. Finally, my godparents were Italian and the summers my siblings and I spent in their home, we all spoke Italian. And I’ve been told my English is okay.My foreign-born grandparents all spoke English well enough to manage daily life despite not being born or raised in the USA. My parents are bilingual, my generation is fluent but not bilingual and the next generation is conversant but not fluent. However, every generation born on American soil speak English. My mother’s parents died over 50 years ago. They were Hungarian immigrants farming in southern Manitoba. My family used to drive for visits from southern Alberta once (or twice) a year.
The Uncles and Aunts were fluent in English (having learned it in school from French-Canadian Nuns).
Grandpa spoke enough English to deal with the merchants and neighbours.
I don’t recall Grandma ever speaking English, I think she never left the farm.
