Ed Clint has been working hard

I agree. Ed Clint deserves the reputation he’ll acquire from his hard work.

If only he had some talent or a sense of humor, it wouldn’t have required quite so much work…but I’m glad he’s found a way to compensate for his shortcomings with obsessive diligence.

Ed Clint now denies having anything to do with that site. I guess I’ll have to accept his word.

Ed Clint also says Paula Kirby’s “Sisterhood of the Oppressed” was a fair and reasonable document. Calling people Nazis is OK when it is carefully justified.

I know! I know! I’ll respond by calling him Head Lint. Because it rhymes and must be true. Or something.

See, I just made myself cooler and smarter and correcterer than him. :)

The cheap person-of-uncertain-parentage skimps on server-power though. He’s just a big meanie – Now I won’t know if I’m of the lucky parodées. (I’m probably not, given my infrequent posting of frequent poor quality, but the combination of vanity and curiosity must be satisfied dammit!)

“Greg Bin Laden” and “Tis Wet Himself.” That’s this guy’s attempt at humor.
    Sad really…

  5. joed says

yes, it is sad. all the effort to create nonsense in what seems to be an attempt to be unkind.

You know I’m not above the odd petty comment now and then, by pettiness on that scale takes real commitment…to pettiness…

That site gave me the biggest laugh I’ve had on Pharyngula in a while. Looks like I’ve got a date tonight. Me, a bottle of whiskey, a joint, and Freethoughtblahgs. I wonder what will give out first, my desk, or my head?

So much time and effort wasted thoughtfully spent bringing me pure joy at the expense of idiots.

  8. jim says

If the collective here, including PZ, can’t see itself in the funhouse mirror version, that’s a large part of what makes it humorously accurate.

  9. Woo_Monster, Sniffer of Starfarts says

I am not following you. The fact that a parody is poor and unreflective of the subject it is attempting to mock –> it is “humorously accurate”?

Me: jim is all like, “I am an idiot”.

Jim: I don’t see how that is a good parody of me. I’ve never said anything like that.

Me: Haha! the fact that you think the parody is so off-base is a large part of what makes it humorously accurate!

  10. says

    jim:

If the collective here, including PZ, can’t see itself in the funhouse mirror version, that’s a large part of what makes it humorously accurate.

The only reflection I can see in that website is Mr Clint’s.

  11. Woo_Monster, Sniffer of Starfarts says

    ha!
    Touched a nerve, didn’t he?
    huh? touch a nerve? huh?

    no?

An attempted nerve-touching was certainly made.

I’m not sure if pointing and laughing was the result Ed desired though.

  12. thisisaturingtest says

jim: funhouse mirrors are fun because they’re grossly inaccurate- that is to say, distorted- versions of reality. So, are you saying that the inaccurate nature of the parody is what makes it accurate (and funny)?

  13. Gnumann, メンズ権利活動家国家の売国奴 says

Although I am a little upset that ‘Tis, Caine, Josh, and Improbable Joe have been (*ahem*) “satirized”, but apparently I’ve been left out. >:(

There can only be one conclusion to this Audley. Ed Clint owes us a vintage Leica Rangefinder! Each!

(Though I’ll settle for a large-format camera of good make, a lab and a lifetime’s supply of film sheets and chemicals.)

  14. says

    jim:

If the collective here, including PZ, can’t see itself in the funhouse mirror version, that’s a large part of what makes it humorously accurate.

It’s funny ‘cuz it’s true. Right?

I mean, it’s funny when you distort something so much it no longer resembles the thing it’s distorting. Right?

    Or something.

Actually, what does make it humorously accurate, rather than just humorously pathetic? In what way is it accurate?

You’re confusing me, jim. It’s kinda like you haven’t established the accuracy at all, but declare it accurate anyway.

  15. Woo_Monster, Sniffer of Starfarts says

Don’t feel left out! Here, a satirization of your nym that is as witty as anything Ed may come up with. Maudley Pee Darkfart.

  16. carlie says

I noticed he brilliantly changed Lousy Canuck to… Lousy Canuck. Guess the well had to run dry sooner or later.

It’s really sad, the amount of time that obviously went into that site. That’s an unhealthy level of obsession, what that is.

  17. says

Carlie: There is no worse name for me than the one I myself chose.

Not even “Shitty Canuck”. Or “Mediocre Canadian”. Or “Unimportant Person from Canada”.

  18. jim says

@22 “You’re confusing me, jim. It’s kinda like you haven’t established the accuracy at all, but declare it accurate anyway.”

Yes, because getting into an anal retentive argument regarding underlying assumptions and arguments related to how exactly accurate or inaccurate the parody/satire is only to be descended upon by the collective here doesn’t make the point. At all.

  19. Woo_Monster, Sniffer of Starfarts says

jim, actually trying to substantiate the claim that the parody is accurate may not go far (it is pretty clearly off base), but it will go a fuck-ton farther that just begging the question of it being accurate. Support your claim or don’t bother to make it.

  20. says

    jim:

Yes, because getting into an anal retentive argument regarding underlying assumptions and arguments related to how exactly accurate or inaccurate the parody/satire is only to be descended upon by the collective here doesn’t make the point. At all.

That’s strange. Our ability to discuss the intricacies of satire doesn’t seem to be the point of the site.

Tell me, jim, what is the point of that site?

Near as I can tell, it’s a childish attempt to strawman all of FTB, and call that strawman funny.

  21. says

You have to know what a strawman argument is to make one, poopyhead!

NOBODY likes to play with you at recess, and you’re always last to be picked for any team!

You have NO CREDIBILITY at this school! I mean, like, even the AV nerds won’t sit at your lunch table.

  22. says

Freethoughtblahgs? That’s reminiscent of Mad magazine after they stopped giving a shit and started titling everything “The Agony and the Blecchstasy” and so forth.
And where the hell is foolboy12 or maybe ferriswheel12? I won’t be ignored, Ed.

  23. carlie says

Dang, I should have picked a more interesting ‘nym to use than this one so it would be easy to satirize. I guess I could be “You’re so vain”? Or is that too old of a reference?

  24. thisisaturingtest says

    jim: “…the collective here…”
Now that is funny, I don’t care who you are. Why is that folks who can’t defend the accuracy of their comment on its own have to resort to seeing collusion in what is simply agreement that it was wrong?

  25. thisisaturingtest says

Is there some satiric significance to the fact that, under the “Strangula” header, “embryology” is spelled “embriology”? Is this an accepted variant, or can he just not spell?

  26. says

Seems to me that it’s the slimepit sympathizers who are creating their own websites dedicated to pushing their view of a single issue. That’s more of a deliberate collective effort than what you see here, which is simply broad agreement within an existing community.

  29. Josh, Official SpokesGay says

That’s a poor effort. It’s totally possible to lampoon FtB people and make it funny; anyone can be satirized. But this is just weak. I could do a better job making fun of myself for shit’s sake.

Let me offer a little nudge in the right direction:

  30. arthur says

I haven’t given the spoof blog a thorough look, and I don’t know who Ed Clint is, but on the surface it looks funny to me.

I love reading PZ, but you gotta admit that the Red Cross parody does resonate with some of the (how do I put this tactfully) more “aggressive” aspects of PZ’s style, does it not.

Like most targets of spoofs and parodies, one should take these things as backhanded compliments.

  31. Utakata says

    @jim

Also what I find amusing is those such as yourself who point out such sites as parodies…as in “It’s just a joke like, get over yourselves,” want the audience to take them very seriously. And get all angry, huffy and contorted when we can’t. Lol.

  32. Janine: Fucking Dyke Of Rage Mountain says

Did anyone notice that Orson Scott Card is included in the Enemies? Does that mean the he is heroic, like Abbie Smith?

Also, Nerd is an other regular who got the treatment. You can guess the level of insult there.

Dammit, no one has made a profane parody post about since Dendy. I am loosing my edge.

  33. Janine: Fucking Dyke Of Rage Mountain says

Right, arthur. Femagogue was just so fucking spot on.

But I’m on my sixth unit of booze, so I’m pretty generous with my praise at the mo.

  35. Wowbagger, Deputy Vice-President (Silencing) says

If only we could guarantee these idiots would spend all their time working on these and congratulating each other for it rather than infesting other blogs and Twitter, I’d probably even donate money to it…

  36. Stacy says

There are funny bits. I like “FU” railing at the Red Cross, and Blunderfoot. He doesn’t grok feminism, so those bits don’t gel. You have to understand a thing to parody it effectively.

  37. Wowbagger, Deputy Vice-President (Silencing) says

There’s a bit of a kerfuffle on the #FTBullies hashtag about whether it is actually Ed Clint; have we heard anything more that would count as evidence that it is actually him?

Oh, and I know what Stephanie Svan said, and I’m inclined to accept that, but it’d be good to know if there is anything more.

  38. Wowbagger, Deputy Vice-President (Silencing) says

Ing wrote:Why the fuck would anyone bother with this?

I consider it an honour and a privilege to be able to say I don’t have the fucking faintest idea why anyone would bother with this, and consider it a very positive indictment of my character that I can’t even imagine what might be going through the tiny, shrivelled brains of its creator(s).

  39. Wowbagger, Deputy Vice-President (Silencing) says

He’s a friend/vocal supporter of Abbie Smith’s, and got sprung badmouthing Jen McCreight on Facebook (she has a post about it); don’t know much more about him than that – but I consider that to be enough to know I wouldn’t trust him.

Not sure if he’s deranged enough to have come up with the sad faux-blog, though. I’d have thought Justicar a more likely candidate, though he seems to be distancing himself from the slimepit these day. Of course, given he’s still an extremely slimy creep, it’s entirely possible that’s a ploy to divert attention from him.

  40. Wowbagger, Deputy Vice-President (Silencing) says

Sigh. I caved and went to have a look. Dull and uninspired is probably the best summary of the content. Oh, and wholly lacking in class.

And I don’t know whether to be disappointed that I haven’t made ‘the list’ of regulars to be parodied or not. Admittedly I don’t post all that often anymore, and probably haven’t drawn their attention.

  41. Utakata says

    @Ing, 64:

I think I’ve mentioned this before, but I might as well say it again. As Hitchens once said, “I always think it’s a sign of victory when they move on to the ad hominem.”

  42. says

So I had a look. That level of detail, the not hours but days of work it would have taken, the focusing on certain internet personas. To produce something like this takes a very unhealthy degree of obsession. That’s like, someone’s life opus. Their doctoral thesis. Someone who has intimate knowledge of the goings-on of the last 12 months has spent a very long time in creating a spoof site, with attention to minute details. This is much more scary than anything Mabus has ever done, if you ask me.
