Here is Willie and Waylon covering one of my favorite country tunes:
Jenora Feuersays
Both those artists had more range than people sometimes give them credit for, as you can tell by the cover songs they’ve done.
Johnny Cash famously did a cover of Hurt by Nine Inch Nails that made Trent Reznor basically go ‘It’s not my song anymore’ and mean it in a good way, that Cash’s version was so powerful that Reznor recognized that even though Cash was coming from a different place and meant different things, it was still just as valid a song coming from him. Though apparently it was the music video for it that really hit Reznor in the heart.
Willie Nelson did a cover of Bird on a Wire by Leonard Cohen which is a little more wistful than the original, and which frankly is one of the better covers of a Cohen song I’ve heard. (And I have an album called ‘Tower of Song’ which consists of nothing but covers of Cohen songs.) The cover definitely invokes the feeling of ‘old guy sitting on his porch and reminiscing’.
That’s some GOOD country music right there!
Its melody is also the basis for some classic rock: https://youtu.be/3deQXzV-qTk?si=i3F5DgXzQ43MaZ-E
It took the genius of Ray Manzarek to make something like that happen . . . .
