PBS Newshour had a piece about a town in Pennsatucky with about 800 residents, 99.999999% white and Christian. Serving on the school board used to be a minor job, but several upstanding members of the community have taken their marching orders from Donald Trump and rightwing news, and are now hysterical that the schools are teaching CRT. When asked, those salt-of-the-earth could not define what CRT is, but they’re certain it’s being taught and they’re murderously furious and demand it be stopped now.

They’re also attacking the school library (likely because the town has no library). They are absolutely certain the books are filled with pornography. Up until a year ago, no parent had ever cared what was in the school library, but now they’re on a rampage to shut it all down. Because it’s PBS, they showed two people fighting against the insanity; one a parent who said she could take her child to the library in another town or buy her whatever books she wanted, but many people in that town couldn’t, and it was important to have a freely-available school library with a variety of books. They also showed a former member of the school board--lifelong resident of the town, social worker (my note: rural areas like that really need social workers because of all of the family dysfunction from poverty, meth, drugs, alcohol abuse). He was in favor of having a variety of books, and was so viciously attacked and called a “groomer” and “pedophile” that he stepped down from the school board job he’d held for decades.

The mob has been radicalized by years of talk radio and rightwing puppetmasters, and “You Cannot Reason People Out of Something They Were Not Reasoned Into”.

Doing the math, as you people say, that equates to just one resident roughly my size with about 0.7 grammes of their bodyweight NOT white and Christian.

It wasn’t a criticism, just amused me to do the sums. I get metaphor just fine.
