My phone is a Nokia 3310, which has done me sterling service for the last seventeen years. It does not need a case. When I drop it, more often than not it will leave a dent in the ground.

When I got my first (and so far only) smart phone 5 years ago, I found the hard plastic shell too slippery so I got a case for it made of soft textured rubber. I’ve dropped my phone a couple of times over the years, but nothing that probably would have damaged it without a case.
It makes me wonder though, why phones aren’t designed to be more grippable or sturdy without having to add a third party case? A $700 handheld fragile electronic device ought have it’s own built in protection.
Or do I just need to shop around for the ‘tactical’ smart phone?

I have a phone case as well as screen protector. It’s a good thing too because butterfingered as I am I’ve managed to break off every corner of my case and put a nice radial crack in my screen. At this point the screen protector protects my fingers from getting cut more than the screen from getting smashed!

I also use my phone naked. It currently has a couple of cracks in the lower left corner which affect it not at all, and which leaves me a bit perplexed. The damage occurred while it was in my pocket, and I don’t know how other than I must have run into something hard and unforgiving such as a granite counter top. One day, I’ll get the screen replaced. Maybe. Until then, I’ll continue being careful and avoid getting it wet.
I didn’t use a case with my previous phone either, and it served me well for three years with nary a scratch on the screen, though the metal back plate had many.
I can’t stand cases. They materially detract from my enjoyment of the phone, and it cost too much to put up with that.

I am a dedicated cyclist and I don’t wear a helmet.
I think my phone has some kind of padding..
That is what my IT expert told me as he handed me the new phone. Heck, what do I know? I can just turn it on.

Ha, I’m a double monster. I have one because it’s cheap and I have a smartphone because my employer forces me to use an app. Neither is protected.

Hardly anyone in The Netherlands does and that’s the leading cycling country.

I don’t have a smart phone. That’s the best way to avoid damaging one.
