How hospitals and insurance companies rip you off

Adam Conover of Adam Ruins Everything explains why it is that health care costs per capita in the US are the highest in the world and so uneven. It is because of a bizarre pricing system (encoded in a book called the Chargemaster) that has been cooked up between medical care providers and the for-profit health insurance companies system that negatively impacts everyone but is most devastating on those who are the least capable of dealing with it – the uninsured.

I had minor laser surgery on both eye about three weeks ago. I gave reception my health card, had the surgery, picked up my health card on the way out and that was it. And any other legal Canadian resident could have done the same.

My guess would be the exam and actual surgery on two eyes would come in at about $300 or $350 based on what I used to know of the cost of some other procedures.

Oh, IIRC I did have to pay about $5 for some eye-drop, at the drugstore

Oh, but you are a prisoner of the evil socialist medical system!
True, but I am planning on making a break for the border soon. The Québec border that is.

Almost two years ago my SO had a heart attack.
4 days in CICU, 7 more in CCU, implantation of an automatic defibrillator, numerous scans, tests, drugs, 4 months of rehab, cardiac ablation surgery, numerous visits with numerous specialists cost us, out of pocket…
    $0.00

We paid for the ambulance because that’s not covered for mysterious reasons.
It was about $400 but we got 3 ambulances and the shift supervisor for that price.
She gave my crisis-buddy and me a free ride to the hospital.
    .
We’re also paying for the meds, which aren’t cheap.

What passes for public healthcare in the USA is an abomination.

I needed a routine vaccination in the US a few years ago. The vaccine was given in three doses, each two months apart. The first two were covered by insurance. Then I lost my job. The third cost me $137.

It’s regulated, in other words. By capitalists. What could possibly go wrong?

There has been some discussion in the last 2 or 3 years about extending medicare to cover drugs as well. Some economists are estimating that it would save everyone a good bit of money including companies whose supplementary insurance polices cover drugs. I think this is mainly because bulk buying means getting better prices.

    Let’s keep our fingers crossed.

What passes for public healthcare in the USA is an abomination.
Isn’t that a bit of an understatement?

What is probably going to be passed for healthcare is way worse than an abomination

The whole idea is let them suckers work hard and save there money. Then when they get old and sick well take it all away. The system is designed that way and then after we get there money we uthanise them. Dont think so check out wash state and oregon. Look close and you will see.
