Good riddance

Today is the day that NSA director Keith Alexander leaves his post. I would be very happy about this except that it is very likely that his replacement will be cut from the same cloth of being a smooth liar.

Alexander’s departure was announced a long time ago but what was a surprise was the announcement today that Mike Rogers, the chair of the House Intelligence Oversight Committee and one of the worst apologists for the abuses by the NSA, has said that he is retiring and will not seek re-election in 2014.

I doubt that his replacement as chair will be much better. The intelligence committees of both houses tend to be stacked with authoritarian types who tend to see their oversight role as protecting the intelligence agencies from oversight rather than as serving as the people’s watchdogs.

But I am still glad to see the back of both of them.

It’s hard to imagine anyone worse, so I suppose there’s a possibility that any change will be for the better.

If it is, it’ll be an accident.

So, when he steps down, will he then be charged with perjury for claiming that bulk collection thwarted dozens of terror plots?

Yeah, as I’ve said before, these days it seems there are only two kinds of American politicians: those who think the government can do nothing wrong and those who think it can do nothing right.

Where do you think he’ll wind up? Lockheed? Booz? A consultancy? At his level, my guess is he’ll start his own consultancy and basically act as a lobbyist. Any bets?

@ Mano Singham :Be careful what you wish (&/or say “good riddance” for) it can always get worse and frequently does. Sometimes life really sucks.
