I second this prediction, which saddens me -- I feel that if the Republicans had a real contender among them, it would force Pres. Obama to re-energize his liberal base by keeping some of the promises he made in 2008. With the playing field this easy, he can continue to coast to re-election on lip service to the principles that put him in office in the first place.
But I’m not bitter.

I completely agree. There is actually a scientific explanation for it (to the extent that econometrics is a branch of science): see Bread and Peace theory and Real Disposable Income. The short, popular version of this scientific theory: “It’s the economy, stupid.”

The real issue is: will the top Republicans sit this one out and wait for 2016 to avoid being tagged with the “loser” label?
