There is a hidden alcove deep in the heart of the Science & Math building on the UMM campus, with a little fish pond and some prairie grasses. You have to know how to get there to find it, so it’s a bit isolated and quiet. Soon enough the pond will freeze over and everything will be covered in snow.
For now, we have a dramatic scene on display.

My money is on Baby Yoda.
I suspect we are having a brown winter this year, though it will probably be punctuated by a blizzard or two. The trees aren’t even close to being leafless and we are still frost free, much less anything close to a hard freeze.
I still have tomatoes and morning glories growing happily, though I did bring the tropical plants inside for the season when it got down below 40 degrees f about a week ago.
My swallowtail caterpillars both managed to reach full size and have gone off to pupate until spring. I will definitely plant dill and parsley in my planters again next spring. Caterpillars and fresh herbs are simple pleasures.
But there will be two more velociraptors, sneaking up on Yoda from the sides!

Sometimes ducks nest in isolated garden sites at the hospital where I work, they don’t understand they are encircled by buildings. We have to carry the chicks to a pond, or escort the mom and the chicks through hallways to an exit.
