Spiders came to be associated with Halloween because a lot of people esp in Western culture are arachnophobic. Halloween is about “scary”* things and what a lot of peope find scary is spiders so there’s the connecton. Ditto bats and snakes albeit the final one there having a bit more reason behind it. . and since they are afraid of spiders the arachnophobes are often willfully ignorant of spiders and thus suck at understanding what the object of their fears actually looks like besides many legs, hairy, arrrtggh , look away, look away! Etc.. Sothey don’t udnerstand or appreciate where the fake spiders are going wrong.
Or perhaps those are meant to represent Spiders from Mars with Ziggy maybe around somehwere..
The use of Kowaii as both scary and cute in Nihongo (Japanese) seems apt to note here somehow.. Halloween-esque even. Maybe?

New species of trapdoor spider discovered, just in time for Halloween
I always assumed the spider thing was connected to witches. You can’t have witches without their pet spiders.

Per the Search Assist on DuckDuckGo. The assertion at the end about “increased activity” seems like something a spider scientist might be able to verify.
Prompt: why are spiders associated with halloween. what’s the origin of that connection.
Response: Spiders are associated with Halloween due to their historical links to witches and dark magic, as they were often seen as companions of witches in medieval folklore. Their creepy appearance and tendency to inhabit dark, abandoned places further solidified their connection to the spooky atmosphere of Halloween, which has roots in ancient harvest festivals and the Celtic festival of Samhain.
Connection of Spiders to Halloween
Historical Background
Spiders have been associated with Halloween due to their deep roots in folklore and superstition. The origins of Halloween can be traced back to the Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the transition from summer to winter and was seen as a time when the boundary between the living and the dead was thinnest. This connection to death and the supernatural naturally linked spiders to the holiday.
Folklore and Superstitions
In medieval Europe, spiders were often viewed as companions of witches, believed to assist in dark magic. This association led to various superstitions, such as the belief that if a spider fell into a candle, it indicated the presence of a witch. Additionally, seeing a spider on Halloween was thought to be the spirit of a deceased loved one watching over you.
Symbolism of Spiders
Spiders symbolize mystery and fear, often found in dark, abandoned places like old houses and graveyards. Their webs, which can appear suddenly and are often associated with decay, enhance their spooky reputation. This natural behavior made them fitting symbols for Halloween, as they evoke feelings of suspense and the unknown.
Increased Activity in Autumn
During the fall, spider activity increases as they seek shelter from the cold. This rise in visibility around Halloween further solidifies their association with the holiday, as people encounter more spiders in their homes and surroundings.
Overall, the combination of historical beliefs, folklore, and seasonal behavior has made spiders a lasting symbol of Halloween.

Spiders got more prominent once folks started copying the idea of spreading out specialized polyester floss to simulate spiderwebs. The webs used to be ‘just webs’ or repurposed to be something ghosty.
One of my neighbors had a mechanical string-tied drop-spider that fell out of the sycamore in front of his house. It’s a city street tree and they trimmed the heck out of it (possibly due to the fires). So it is not there this year. Alack and alas!
