    I’d almost say I know how the bell curves, but I don’t know where the clapper hangs.
    But I won’t. That would be stoopid.

    From 2016 and 2019 the two major english-speaking nations were led by people in the red region of the diagram who were convinced they were in the green region.
    BTW the diagram would need an extra dimension for narcissism
    And another for belligerence.

    @2 birgerjohansson

    As a friend of mine likes to say, these are people who were born on third base but think they hit a triple.

    René, I know precisely where the clappers hang. One right in front of my face, one directly above my groin.

    @PZ, would you prefer to know your own deficiencies or be like Musk et al and simply blithely blunder forward unaware of them until they fatally trip you up?
    Once, during an exercise, I was asked to list all of my known deficiencies. I declined, as I want to contribute to deforestation that much. We only have one Amazon, after all.

  5. René says

    @Birger: That would make the curve 3-D (at least). I’d call that a boob or a boob curve.

  6. says

    Do not ask for whom the bell curves…
    @3 jimf
    Donald Trump was born on third base and got picked off. He just refuses to leave the field.

    feralboy12 @8:  8-)

    In general, I like being aware of my deficiencies.  Facts are facts, and I’m able to actually succeed at stuff that I might fail at if I thought I were a perfect person.

    As many commenters here say: there are so many who grab for power and money thinking they are part of the cream of the crop of ‘american exceptionalism’. I think we need to examine the two uses of ‘exceptional’:
    ‘exceptionally intelligent/lucky/aggressive’ and ‘exceptionally challenged’ (those who for reasons they can’t control are not brilliant). I have always recognized that I am in many ways challenged. A friend avoided frustration by saying ‘cream will eventually rise to the top’. However, my reply was ‘until some aggressive, arrogant ahole shakes the bottle to jostle themselves to the top.’ Our Heroic Heretic says. “The bell curve is only used by ‘ding-a-lings'”.

    Haha! All you stupid bastards! I was born in that black zone you can see.

    Wait…

    Readers of Discworld books will be familiar with a saying by the captain of the Ankh-Morpork Night Watch :”Scum floats to the top”.

  11. wzrd1 says

    billseymour @ 9, I always remember the fact that I’m a perfect 10.
    Alas, that’s on the Richter scale.

    birgerjohansson @ 12, I originally thought I had said that first. I’ve only been saying it for around 45 years.
    The cream will eventually rise to the top, as does the scum, which usually arrives sooner.
