Child murderer was a white nationalist

Who is surprised? The recent shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival was perpetrated by an angry young man with racist views.

Legan also shared his views that include fringe white supremacist book written in 1890. Called “…one of the most incendiary works ever to be published anywhere,” by a noted anarchist, Legan quoted from the book in a post accompanied by a Smokey the Bear sign about fire danger. He wrote: “Read Might Is Right by Ragnar Redbeard. Why overcrowd towns and pave more open space to make room for hordes of mestizos and Silicon Valley white twats?”

According to the book Modern Satanism: Anatomy of a Subculture, Might Is Right by Ragnar Redbeard was authored under a pseudonym. It is purported to expand on Friedrich Nietzsche’s “theories of master–slave morality and herd mentality …”

The book is described as being akin to Social Darwinism and includes misogynistic and racist principles “claiming that the woman and the family as a whole is the property of the man and proclaiming the innate superiority of the Anglo-Saxon race. The book also contains many strong anti-Semitic statements.”

Please do go on about how antifa is a dangerous organized gang. So far, they’ve killed no one, while these right wing thugs are running up the score. This guy murdered a 6 year old child and seriously wounded his mother and grandmother!

Fascists shoot 6 year olds and grandmas and call the cops to protect them from antifa. And they think they are going to win the war they are trying to provoke. Ignorance and hatred are not going to work; they will make a hell of a mess though.

Meanwhile the FBI says they have taken action against a whopping 100 white supremacist terrorists. A drop in the bucket of deplorables.

And when the federal authorities go after right-wing terrorists, the so-called mainstream right starts wailing about how liberals are sending “Jack Booted Thugs” to arrest “patriotic” Americans who just love the second amendment and freedom.

    We can’t fucking win.

Not surprised. For years and years and years we have had report after report after report – from the Anti-Defamation League lately all the way back to reports put out when Janet Reno was AG – describing that the major terrorist threats in the United States come from right-wing individuals and groups.

Right-wingers will drive through crowds of you if they don’t like you. Antifa will throw milkshakes at you if they don’t like you.
Right-wingers will shoot up your house of worship if they disagree with your beliefs. Antifa will chant loudly so you can’t be heard if they disagree with your beliefs.
Right-wingers celebrate concentration camps to punish you for existing. Antifa will pressure your boss to fire you for being pissed that brown people and Jews exist.

But, we don’t have a major media outlet in the US that will call it like it is. The closest we get is The Young Turks, which although it has a rather large online presence is still dwarfed by even the most milquetoast broadcast media network. TYT also suffers from what all news outlets suffer from and blending too much reporting and editorializing (although I happen to agree with most of the editorializing that goes on there, it’s still questionably ethical).

So, what are we to do? What can we do to stop the near endless procession of domestic terrorists coming from the political right? No matter what we do, the left and the center are still treated by the news, by police, and by most of our politicians as at least as bad as the mass murderers, rapists, and genocidal maniacs on the right; further motivating even more right-wing terrorism. So, what can we do? How can we fight back? Because at this point I’m open to anything from milkshakes to guillotines. The right-wing needs to stop murdering children and minorities just because people on the right are perpetually angry people.

Right. Vacation in Damascus sounds safer. And the food sounds good.

Of course, if I had the money, St. Petersberg looks good though I am not so sure about the food. Still, I have heard that there has been a Syria- Russian connection for years so I might be okay.

Anybody knows some good Syrian restaurants in St Petersberg?

I know that Scott Adams’ idiocy has been noted here in the past, so his attempt to monetize this tragedy probably isn’t much of a surprise. Link

    @3, kome

    So, what can we do?

In general, form an organized effort capable of that level of problem solving, and powerful enough (money power, political power, and/or people power) to implement the discovered solution.

I don’t have the required knowledge to really know, but (as perhaps the only galaxy-brain available to you, and in order for me to practice and hopefully receive feedback) I’ll offer my own speculation…

If the state isn’t going to handle these issues competently, make your own virtual one that can (within the law).

[Similar for other things you wish the government was doing but currently isn’t (child care, better education, healthcare, basic income, funded journalism…): form a membership and do it yourselves, as best you can and within the law. Allow govt to take over if it becomes democratically popular, but retain the ability to do it for yourselves if it is ever democratically voted out.]

I wish there could be a system where everyone is recorded to some degree…but only if that data is securely only available to whoever the specific recorded people trust (though public space would belong to all?). This then sets up responsibility: if there is terrorism, the people holding that data have been negligent, perhaps even guilty. If an individual trusts no one, then they aren’t a member of society and should not be trusted by us either.

It’s sad to think that a 19-year-old with an opinion and a weapon did this, particularly under the misguided guise of white-supremacy. If the reports are accurate about his self-identified ethnic background, Italian-Iranian, he probably wouldn’t qualify as a member of the group by white-supremist standards.

Also, an Instagram post attributed to him apparently made racist remarks about “Silicon Valley Whites”, as well as mestizos, which may seem at odds with the usual white-supremist bigotry. However, there’s considerable resentment in some circles toward affluent, young-ish Silicon Valley workers, or Hipsters. This has been a contentious issue in San Francisco’s Mission District because the influx of these people has driven up rents and other living costs, accelerating gentrification, while they use company provided coaches to shuttle to and from the Valley.

The local news paper has more information about some of the wounded. https://www.mercurynews.com/2019/07/29/gilroy-garlic-festival-gunman-identified-santino-william-legan/

Includied are links for several GoFundMe campaigns for the wounded and the dead. The dead include a 13 year old girl and a young man in his twenties

“A man was climbing over the fence in the last hour of a 3 day HOT Garlic festival. My sister, her husband and son were sitting down to catch their breath after a long weekend. She was at the festival selling Habanero and Garlic Honey for her business, The Honey Ladies. Wendy, told the gunman, ‘No, you can’t do that!’ as she saw him climb the fence with a gun.” The man “opened fire on them, hitting both her and her husband. Their 3 year old son was dragged under the table by a brave 10 year old girl, that probably saved his life,” Towner wrote. “He wanted to run to Mommy and Daddy. The shooter then approached closer, and said ‘are you alright?’ ”

I try to presume people are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Besides, any 19 year old man that is so angry that he’s willing to basically give up his life and also cause extreme harm to others needs to be listened to. He’s a part of our society that’s screaming at us all.

  10. says

Listened to, but not catered to.

It’s good to be aware that flat-earthers are out there arguing the earth is flat. We don’t have to take them seriously, and we can decide for ourselves whether it’s productive to directly rebut their arguments or whether refusing to acknowledge that those arguments have enough credibility to need refutation is perhaps the better course.

Likewise, I think it’s good to know what motivates killers, but that doesn’t mean that we need to treat their articulated motivations as accurate illustrations of the actual problems in a society that might need fixing.

This becomes ridiculously obvious in the case of, “My wife stayed late at work twice in the last month, so I thought she was sleeping with her boss, so I murdered them both,” but somehow when it’s “The immigrants are raping everyone and spreading disease and pay no taxes and want to genocide the white race, the original inhabitants of this continent!” the NYTimes and too many others rush to treat those things as serious issues.

I’m not saying you would make the same mistake as the NYTimes, but since the mistake is unfortunately common in our society, I just thought I’d add this specific repudiation of such thinking.

    idiot troll:
…and also cause extreme harm to others needs to be listened to.

    Yeah sure.
Homicidal white supremacists who randomly kill people with an assault rifle always have such intelligent and profound things to say.
This has got to be the dumbest and most mentally twisted thing I’ve read in the last week.

We did listen to the Nazis screaming at us in the last century.
Then we rolled over them with the combined armed forces of the free world and the USSR.
    It was a great answer.

    idiot troll again:
… so angry that he’s willing to basically give up his life …

    Irrelevant and no big deal.
The current champions and leaders at throwing away their lives for their religion and their causes are the al Qaeda and ISIS terrorists.
They’ve been killed by the tens of thousands at the least.
Their message has been, “kill us or we will kill you.”

Self made martyrs who kill until they are killed for hate and lies are dime a hundred and worth less.

(CW: analysis of a book of fascist, racist, hateful filth)

One thing I can’t get over is the hilariously overheated writing style of many fascist “thinkers”. Ragnar Redbeard (giggle) especially makes Theodore Beale look modest and economical with words. They write fucking EVERYTHING like they’re trying to do Homer or something, but in the end it reads more like Warhammer 40k. The worst, like Redbeard (snort) and Julius Evola, can barely put together a sentence without shoving six badly-constructed poetic devices into it to make more epic-er. Ragnar Redbeard (are you fucking KIDDING me?) can’t just be angry at Christianity and not believe in Jebus, he has to UPLIFT A BROAD-AXE AND SPLIT HIS WORM-EATEN SKULL (actual quote) until he has hydrogen sulfide poisoning from inhaling his own farts.

I give Redbard (BWAHAHAHAHA) a D- in composition and “see me after class”.
