How did you celebrate Trump’s 100 days in office?

I went to the rally for the People’s March for Climate in Fargo. I guess 200,000 people attended the march in Washington, DC. That’s more than attended his inauguration! People are protesting all around the world.

Meanwhile, Trump has fled the capitol and all the contempt for his presidency to try and restore his confidence with another of his silly, itty-bitty rallies in Pennsylvania. Afterwards, he’ll stare into a mirror and struggle to reassure himself that he really is loved, as tears stream down his cheeks.

    He is pathetic.
He also just ditched a contract the Alaskan Native Americans wrote to protect the Bering Strait from climate change. Essentially just tore it up.
While claiming the News MEdia is refusing to publish all his accomplishments to make him look bad.

    100 days? Who cares?

We are currently waiting on his mad ideas about international trade. Someone seems to have shown a New Yorker what a cow look like.

“Afterwards, he’ll stare into a mirror and struggle to reassure himself that he really is loved, as tears stream down his cheeks.” – I really doubt that. He has a tremendous gift for convincing himself that he’s the best and brightest that the world has ever seen. He’ll have a twitter fit, claim that the protests are fake news, his entourage of sycophants will agree that everyone loves him, and everything will be back to “normal” by Monday…

People march and the Republicans win the elections. Maybe people should vote. I have yet to see what marches and protests that the left finds so captivating accomplish other than make the people who march feel good about themselves and satisfy some need to feel that they are doing something. I get it that people feel the need to express themselves, but I also think the Republicans just laugh at this. They don’t mind at all that the left spends effort on marches. And who gives a shit about how may people attended Trump’s inauguration (besides Trump)? He was being inaugurated while Hilary sat at home pouting. Look how many people marched! Yippee. No body wanted to attend or perform at the inauguration. Who cares? Meanwhile Trump starts his dismantling of science-based policy.

Actually, she was on the stand with him, keeping a very straight face.

Why? There were 200.000 people marching for him in Washington. Many more went out for him all over the world! He is the bigliest president evah!^111

I agree that those on the left of American politics (and the overton window over there is so far to the right that most of what you call the left most people would think of as centrists and mainstream right-wingers) should get out and vote in greater numbers. There aren’t exactly all that many votes to participate in right now though. And participation in democratic government does not begin or end with voting in elections.

Marches set the tone for the public debates. Marches show the politicians the mood of the people. Politiicians can and do respond to them – why do you think Trump has no successes to crow about today? A fair bit of it is do to with others people in power reading the mood of the country and not wanting to have to go back to their electors in a few years’ time and explain their complicity in some very unpopular things. Marches show people that they are not alone in their opposition to Trumpish tyranny and vileness, and let people who might otherwise keep quiet speak out and make a difference. There are plenty of political marches in history that helped to make a real difference in this way. I would think immediately of Jarrow, but for the US context perhaps Selma is the one you would bear in mind.

One wonders what your proposed course of action instead of marching would be? Rioting? Nothing?

All of these marches and protests are great and inspiring but I wonder if Trump and his ilk even notice them. They seem to live in a world where alternative facts rule and their opposition barely exists.

That’s more than attended his inauguration!

    cartomancer,

I guess what bothers me is what I see as the overdone pride in this. So yes the Trump supporters did not massively assemble at the inauguration. What they did was VOTE. This glee in the low attendance and Trump’s exaggeration of it really bothers me. Who cares? They VOTED. What also bothers me is I’m afraid this is satisfying some need in the protesters to do something and when there is a chance to actually do something, like campaign for their congressional candidate they won’t feel the need to do anything because well they marched and protested.

I agree that sometimes marches matter and I almost said something about Selma in my original comment but I thought “Surely nobody will reference Selma!”. This is not Selma. And like I said in my original comment I think the Republicans are happy with this. They want the “do something” to be doing something that doesn’t matter. You say marches show politicians the mood of the people. I think not. These marches are showing the Republicans that the left is marching. They know the people in these marches didn’t vote for them and won’t vote for them and so they don’t give a crap. I think they are laughing. I may be wrong.

There is a lot of ink being spilled on get out and march and look at how we got out and marched! My response is so what? The Republicans don’t care. The effort is misplaced. Maybe the marchers should be spending their time and money figuring out how to get out more votes. Look at my block quote above. Yippee! Who fucking cares besides Trump? Get over it. They VOTED. It’s just frustrating.

Chuck Stanley, most of us here at this blog vote. I’ve voted in every election since ’72. We encourage everybody to vote. We can’t force them to vote.
Do you have an actual plan, other than just saying vote?

More people protested than attended the inauguration?

    Not according to alternative math.

    …Trump…Hilary…

I realize that this is very common in the media, but it annoys the hell out of me. If you write “Trump”, please write “Clinton”. Alternatively, if you absolutely must write “Hilary”, then please write “Donald”. I know the sexism you are showing is culturally ingrained, but all it takes is a little awareness and willingness to show equal respect.

It has been reported that Trump’s staff has to carefully select and present Drumpf with “news” stories from sources such as Faux News and Breitbart, to protect his fragile ego and keep his mood easier for them all to deal with. I also made the mistake of listening to BBC news recently, where the blind loyalty often associated with leaders such as Kim Jun-Il, Kim Jun-Un, and Vladimir Putin were on full display, with the reporter talking to the “Vote for Trump” rally attendees saying how Drumpf kept all of his promises and has proven himself to be highly reliable and trustworthy as president. They obviously still believe that their income and economy will dramatically increase any day now. Should be interesting to see how long it lasts, and when that support will start to wake up.
