I guess the UK is rather racist, too…or at least that portion of the country that reads the Daily Mail. There is some idle speculation that maybe someday in some distant future some Sony executive might like to explore the idea of hiring Idris Elba to play the role of James Bond — it’s really even more tentative than that implies, because Daniel Craig is apparently under contract to do a few more — and look at how Daily Mail readers reacted to that hint of a possibility.

The godless have been praised by Rachel Maddow for being one of the few American subgroups that recognize torture for what it is, and oppose it.
While many might assume that the faithful would be morally repulsed by torture, the reality is the opposite. When poll respondents were asked, “Do you personally think the CIA treatment of suspected terrorists amounted to torture, or not?” most Americans said the abuses did not constitute torture. But it was non-religious Americans who were easily the most convinced that the “enhanced interrogation techniques” were, in fact, torture.
The results in response to this question were even more striking: “All in all, do you think the CIA treatment of suspected terrorists was justified or unjustified?” For most Americans, the answer, even after recent revelations, was yes. For most Christians, it’s also yes. But for the non-religious, as the above chart makes clear, the torture was not justified.
In fact, looking through the poll’s crosstabs, non-religious Americans were one of the few subsets that opposed the torture techniques – and that includes breakdowns across racial, gender, age, economic, educational, and regional lines. The non-religious are effectively alone in their opposition to torture.

I’m partially recovered from my orgy of grading yesterday, and I’m going to defer that last stack of term papers until tomorrow. Today we’re going to the Big City! First stop will be in St Cloud to have lunch with Eldest Son, then off to Minneapolis for a meetup with a few of my FtB pals and any interested and friendly locals.
It’s that time. Finals are over. The students get to relax, and many of them get to travel home to enjoy time with family. And we professors get to sit before stacks of exams, a battery of red pens at hand, and begin the awful process of grading.
I am about to cloister myself with two sets of exams and a pile of term papers, and I will not emerge until they are done. My goal is to get through them all before our trip to Minneapolis tomorrow. So no distractions allowed.
