I’m sure you’ve all heard the tragic story of Amanda Todd, the teenage girl who killed herself after prolonged bullying. Normal human beings will read about her and be near tears; she was broken by callous sexual predators, her life made miserable, and she finally gave up on it.
The Amazing Atheist is not a normal human being.
Instead, The Amazing Atheist raged at the fact that this young woman was getting attention when other people have died, too. She was a well-off Western girl with plenty of privileges, so how dare we consider her story particularly tragic? There are so many other people who are worse off than she was!
Well, you know, we have a couple of choices in our lives.
We could, for instance, search the world for that one person who is in the worst circumstances of anyone; the person who is suffering the very most right now. We can do this while turning up our nose at each other afflicted individual who isn’t hurting enough for our standards; why, you’re a quadriplegic dying in a ditch? But you don’t have shingles! And both your eyes are intact! I’m sure we can find someone worse off than you. And then when we find that ultimate person in pain, we can promise to do everything we can to help them.
But I’ve noticed that people who make that kind of argument aren’t actually offering to help anyone. Their perversely inverted, demanding standards are really an excuse to turn away from the miserable they consider undeserving, to justify refusing to help…because that ultimate sufferer will never be found.
But you do have a choice. The other thing you could do is recognize deep pain in others and do what you can to help them. If one person had sincerely and honestly turned to Todd when she was being abused, and offered to help, maybe she’d still be here, and the world would be a slightly better place.
She wasn’t asking for much.
The Amazing Atheist begrudges her that much.
I don’t see any difference between him and the bullies who beat her up and mocked her on facebook and poured scorn on her in school.
And some people wonder why there is a growing rift in the atheist movement. All you have to do is look at people like the Amazing Atheist to see that some atheists, people who are convinced that there is nothing beyond ourselves, that we are dependent entirely on our fellow human beings and nothing more, lack that humanity that is our only source of unity and our only true reason for living.
Don’t be surprised that some of us want nothing to do with such sociopaths.

There are a few points I’d like to make about Amanda. Regarding TAA’s raising “valid points, however crudely” about how society values young white people over others? Well, open your eyes, geniuses; Amanda Todd was biracial. In photographs, Amanda’s mother, Carol Todd, appears to be Asian, or perhaps Eskimo. You can clearly see the Asian influence in Amanda’s features.
Did she have “every advantage”? Well, her father isn’t married to her mother, so she may not have had a stable family structure. The fact that she was manipulated into showing her body to a webcam makes me suspect that she had been molested as a child. Whatever the cause, the fact that she submitted indicates that she was especially vulnerable to everything that happened afterward. I can’t say for sure that she was molested, but I can say for sure that those who say she “had every advantage” are talking out of their ass.
This is not only a story of bullying. Amanda Todd was trapped by child predators, who handed her off to the society around her. That’s pretty fucking horrible, and a good reason why this story needs attention. The predators who trapped her were seeking out the kids who were desperate for approval, and that would naturally include the kids who had been abused and neglected. The fact that kids on youtube are most definitely blaming Amanda is a reason why we need to keep a focus on this kind of child abuse. I think it’s definitely a feminist issue, so natually our pal TJ doesn’t like it. It’s not just that he’s morally outraged that those other kids aren’t getting their fair share of “likes” on Facebook.
I believe that Amanda Todd herself deserves much of the credit for becoming, as TJ so dismissively calls her, “a social media darling”. The girl made a remarkable video, though it’s not exactly easy to watch. It’s more than haunting and lovely, it’s remarkably articulate. In simple handwritten sentences, Amanda tells her whole horrific story without flinching. If you can handle it, you can really feel how desperate she was at the moment when that video was taken.
One of the things that pissed me off most about the TAA’s video was his willful ignorance of why Amanda was getting the attention. I counted three times when he openly declared that he did know why Amanda had become famous. HOW CAN HE DENOUNCE THE PHENOMENON AFTER OPENLY ADMITTING THAT HE DOESN’T KNOW WHAT THE PHENOMENON IS? And how could he not know? Is he bereft of intellectual curosity? Does he not know how Google works?
Or is it that acknowledging that Amanda Todd’s fame is not just random would get in the way of his fake premise, and that’s why it’s ignored?

The monster then took the image and proceeded to send out through social media to the students, over and over and over again. Following her to the schools she transferred to.
