Glenn Beck has a very silly poll

His site, The Blaze, has an article about these crazy conservative Christians who disagree with the mainstream view that there were precisely two people, Adam and Eve, who founded the whole human race. And it has a poll which is going in a predictable direction for wacky Beck.

How did mankind come about?

God created man in present form, as per the Genesis story 75.16%

God created man and the universe, but scientific evolution occurred 17.52%

Man evolved without God’s creation or intervention 4.88%

I’m unsure 2.44%

Maybe we can change some of those numbers around.

Barbara, you come in here with no substaince in order to smuggly claim you are supperior than the rest of us when you clearly don’t know any of us.
I think you need to look closely at the mirror, cupcake.

  2. Makyui says

Yup, we’re totally fakes just fooling ourselves, but wise ol’ Barbara figured it out better than all of us after just a handful of exchanges. Did you pay for that psychiatric training, or is that another miracle Gawd revelation?

  3. Nerd of Redhead says

    I really feel for you

And I feel sorry for you, a delusional fool without any basis in reality. You aren’t worth hating. Hating takes effort, which requires your imaginary bully to push you to do it, and your mythical/fictional babble to give you courage.

  4. says

If I called you scum like you think of your self then I would be just like you.

You all have no values. You value nothing except each others badness.

Ah, Barbie chose to “be like us” after all.

Sorry, joining your own projection really gets you nowhere.

I do think that creationism, etc., does provide an opportunity for equality that is often missed. Females get to join in the circle jerks, too.

  5. The Lone Coyote says

thank you for illustrating my point PERFECTLY, Barbie. Keep confirming what I already know, that behind every big forced church smile is a bubbling pot of steaming condescension and smug self superiority.

  6. The Lone Coyote says

I’m actually kinda disappointed, Barbie had me thinking she was honestly trying to understand where we come from for a post or two. That’s what I get for giving someone the benefit of the doubt.

  7. Dhorvath, GravityMagnet says

    Barbara,

Hi all, I’ve come back to visit to give you all some more fodder to feed your poor little minds.

If you never came here we would continue all the same. Don’t overestimate your impact.

Yep, you all are in competition with each other to see who is the baddest bser.

    Are we?

Guess who wins? All of you.

    Do I get a cookie?

You all hate. You hate everything

So based on a single thread with about five hundred comments you now feel justified in passing judgement on a community with hundreds of thousands of comments over thousands of threads?

and pretend with each other that you support each other.

    So show that we don’t.

No you have no idea what it is to have a real friend.

    Because?

    You all have no values.

    Again, show that we don’t.

You value nothing except each others badness.

    And again.

What you are really saying is that we don’t value you and since you can’t possible conceive that we might be correct in our evaluation we must be deeply flawed. Your unsupported opinion has been noted and dismissed. Most of us don’t want to spend any time being confrontational, but the alternative we find is to allow theists to walk all over us. This space has become somewhat of a haven for us and yes, we do guard it jealously. Not because we don’t want you to participate, but because we don’t want you to dominate.

    You think that is living?

Try being seen as a monster for not believing something and then you can talk about what is and what isn’t living. Right now you are just pushing the same tired shit our way and we aren’t much interested in allowing that unopposed.

I guess it’s the only way you know. Keep up the wall you surround your self with because no one wants to identify with your self proclaimed inner evilness. I know that makes you feel good. If I called you scum like you think of your self then I would be just like you. No thanks. I will be the scantimounious one that you call me because you reject anything that might be good about you or any one else. You have lost the ability to distinguish what is good in this world and you embrace what you feel is bad.

Nonsense, the people here are as full of empathy and support as any group you will find. We just don’t want belief used as a tool of judgment and when someone comes here and judges us based on their beliefs it gets our backs up.

Thats your choice and thats why you all feel the need to destroy others.

We don’t want to destroy you, just to have you either respect our space and keep your beliefs out of it, or barring that have you detest our space and keep yourself out of it.

Some of you may grow up and get some smarts who knows.

    I am singed.

But most of you will wallow in misery forever.

Forever is a word that doesn’t have much traction around here. Are you trying to evoke damnation? None of us believe in your cliched driver’s whip.

I really feel for you. Have fun disecting this post as its what you are really good at.

I don’t know about good, but I enjoyed it.

Drats, I hate this time difference thingy. It’s 8.20 pm here and I have to get ready to go out to a fiesta with all the friends I hate. It will be a suprise when I tell them I hate them, but according to Babara I must do.
Chances are I will not be back home until 6 or 7 tomorrow (Sunday). Any chances you can keep it going till then? Too much fun to miss.

Re Dan Nunley: I had a little look around teh interwebs, and suspect Mr Dan, the nice nice man, to be a Tax Director at Grant Thornton — not a fabulous tax director, mind you (anyone who made Senior Manager in 99 should be heading for senior partner by now if they were serious and smart!)

As for Barbera… she comes across as a shit-filled twinkie.

From the outside it looks perfectly innocuous. Normal even. Perhaps a little saccharine for my taste, but, hey – each to their own. But take one bite, and…

  11. Dhorvath, GravityMagnet says

    ‘smee,
I know that Dan made a big deal about not hiding his identity, but I find it a little creepy that you are going out of your way to identify him. Is it really pertinent to the discussion?

  13. says

Hey, Barbara. I’ve noticed that your long rants about us aren’t being taken seriously and have suspended my quest through Middle-earth to give counsel.

First off, this hate that you speak of? This is a public forum, so quote it in context and let it be known what the hate is and where it springs from. Probably the first and most important step.

Second? Explain how you know that the people here do not know what a ‘real friend’ is. Of course, you’re first going to have to explain what exactly a ‘real friend’ is, and then you’re going to have to show that you know every person here (or at least those responding to you) well enough to know whether they have such friends.

Third, get your story straight. First you say that the people here have no values, then you turn around and say that we ‘value each others [sic] badness’. Now, of course, if we have no values then we cannot value each others’ so-called ‘badness’ — so which is it?

Fourth, if we have somehow ‘lost the ability to distinguish what is good in the world’, maybe try and help us regain this ability. It’s damn hard for us to right our so-called wrongs if all you’re going to tell us is that we’re wrong with no clue as to how or where we went wrong and what we can do to correct it.

Fifth, explain how you can know each of our mental states such that you can say that most or all of us ‘wallow in misery’. I’ve no idea how you can make such a statement short of reading our minds…or perhaps taking your own mental state and acting like everyone but you has it.

If you can do these five simple things then you might find this hall and its words more welcoming to you and yours. If you cannot, then wipe the dust from your feet and take your leave, for the only person wasting their time here is you. This is my counsel, take it as you will.

  14. 'smee says

    Dhorvath, GravityMagnet @514

I typed Dan Nunley Dallas TX into google (restricting hits to LinkedIn). 1 hit within 25 miles of Dallas TX

  16. Quodlibet says

Oh Barbara, those sour grapes sure are….sour.

For someone who supposedly decries all the “hate” in this community, you sure sound…hateful.

I’ve been observing this community for about a year and a half, and I comment only once in a while, but I can assure you that any person — any person! — who ventures in here will be welcomed IF he or she is willing to discuss and debate honestly. That means being willing to examine one’s own beliefs, knowledge, experience, etc., and being willing to admit when a change might be in order. I know because it has happened to me. Anyone who remains close-minded, bigoted, hateful (examine your own speech), violent (metaphorical porcupines excepted), and, especially, WILLFULLY OBTUSE ABOUT REALITY AND HUMANITY will be cajoled, lectured, spoken to tersely, mocked, ridiculed, cursed at, and, eventually, rejected AND ejected. Every person gets a chance to be heard but only if they are willing to engage in rational debate. Rational – that’s a key concept here. R-A-T-I-O-N-A-L.

Now Barbara, would you like to see some really hateful speech that divides believers and non-believers? Just go back to the Blaze and read the sewer of comments from the Loving Christians in response to this while silly brouhaha about the “poll.” Be honest as you read. Be honest. Examine your heart. Are these comments, and the people who left them, the example of loving, tolerant, thinking Christianity? Hmm? Are you one of that group? Death threats, rape threats, violent sadistic language, you name it. Even if you didn’t write any of those comments, aren’t you part of the whole ideaology that promotes that “christian” way of approaching the world? Can you imagine being on the receiving end of that invective?

You’ve expressed hope that we atheists would “grow up.” I would suggest that we are actually further along in the maturity process than religious people, including you, as we have outgrown the need for invisible gods and fairies. We live moral, productive lives because we choose to. We behave ethically and generously because it is the right thing to do, not because someone threatens us with eternal torture and desolation if we do not.

Face the fact: There is no god, and religion is a scam to take advangate of your ignorance. Period.

You have a lot of thinking to do. If you can be really honest with yourself, you have a chance to salvage what remains of your life here on earth. Life is here and now. That is all!

  17. Audley Z. Darkheart OM, purveyor of candy and lies says

    Barbara:

No you have no idea what it is to have a real friend.

Well, I guess I have some phone calls to make. My friends deserve to be informed that they’ve been duped all these years into believing that I’m worth hanging out with.

Oh wait. Were you talking about your invisible friend Jesus?

    You all have no values.

Stop being so vague. “Values” has almost no meaning in this context.

Are you accusing us of being amoral?

You value nothing except each others badness.

Wait, I thought you just said that we lacked values.

    I CAN HAZ CONSISTENCY, PLZ.

You think that is living? I guess it’s the only way you know… blah blah blah… meaningless drivel… misplaced anger… blah blah blah… Thats your choice and thats why you all feel the need to destroy others.

So, let me get this straight: you create an atheist boogeyman for yourself and then you get mad because you don’t like what you’ve created.

Good lord, Babs, you really are an idiot.

    Or dumbass, if you prefer.

But most of you will wallow in misery forever.

You really enjoy projecting your inadequacies on us, don’t you?

Or is this one of those lessons where we’re supposed to feel like we’re missing something ‘cos we haven’t bathed in Jesus’s love?

Fuck, if you’re the type of sanctimonious troll that’s going to stink up this thread, I think I’d rather have Tom back.

  18. Audley Z. Darkheart OM, purveyor of candy and lies says

    ‘Smee,

Not exactly going out of my way, and hey, Dan wants to share. He does! He told us so.

Then let him share on his own. As much as I think Dan was a huge, smug asshole, I don’t think he deserves to have someone to go digging around trying to find him.

We don’t know if “Dan Nunley” is his real name, we don’t know if Dallas is where he lives, and we definitely don’t need to publish his information– how terrible would it be if somebody was able to harass him based on the information you found? Even worse: what if you found the wrong Dan Nunley (or that isn’t his real name) and an innocent person was threatened or harassed?

    Drop it now.

  19. says

    Barb:

But most of you will wallow in misery forever.

No, cupcake, that would be you. Locked into an authoritarian delusion, wasting your life while your brain atrophies, wasting the only life you’ll ever have. (Look at what you’re doing with your life right now – writing very nasty posts to us. And they are nasty, Barb. Much nastier than a few cusswords here and there.)

I’m a remarkably happy person, and I don’t need an invisible friend to make me okay. I have actual, flesh and blood friends. I’m happily married for over 30 years. I have work I *love* and getting paid for it is a bonus. There really isn’t anything your nasty, sociopathic god could add, Sugar. We aren’t walking around with god-shaped holes.

  20. Sheesh (as seen on Sadly, No!) says

How is it that Christians even become bankrupt? What, they didn’t pray hard enough?

  21. Makyui says

    Lord Setar:

It’s damn hard for us to right our so-called wrongs if all you’re going to tell us is that we’re wrong with no clue as to how or where we went wrong and what we can do to correct it.

Well, that’s pretty much the foundation of her religion. God creates naive child-like adult humans with no sense of right and wrong, tells them to stay away from a tree without explaining why it’s wrong or that they shouldn’t listen to lying snakes, humans get duped by a snake without knowing they did wrong, God throws a hissy fit and punishes them and all their children for the rest of eternity.

And this is ultimate morality, of course. Us silly atheists just don’t get it because we’re silly atheists, and we should just accept what she says. Just like she does. We’re probably not even supposed to be able to correct it. We’re probably just supposed to accept our place beneath her, just like she accepts her place beneath her sky-tyrant.

It’s projection all the way down.

  22. Owlmirror says

    Hi all

    Hi Barbara!

I’ve come back to visit to give you all some more fodder to feed your poor little minds.

I’m supposed to avoid empty mental calories. Oh, well.

Yep, you all are in competition with each other to see who is the baddest bser.

    Actually, we’re competing with you.

Guess who wins? All of you.

    No, no. You win.

    You all hate.

    Dear Barbara,

You are indulging in the psychological tactic of projection. That’s your own hate you’re seeing.

    Hope this helps!

You hate everything and pretend with each other that you support each other.

I know you think that you have secret psychic mind-reading mental powers, but you do not!

No you have no idea what it is to have a real friend.

I know you think that you are clairvoyant, but you are not!

    You all have no values.

It’s pretty clear that you, at least, do not value truth. Tch.

You value nothing except each others badness.

Now you’re contradicting the (rather arrogant) assertion you just made! Clearly, if — note the subjunctive; this is not a concession — people valued each other’s “badness” (what does that even mean?), they would have some values, not no values.

Really, you’re not a very clear thinker, are you?

    You think that is living?

Clearly, anything that is not dead is living. You’re trying — badly — to communicate with people here, so even you think that your interlocutors are living. Do you usually try to communicate with the dead or inanimate?

I guess it’s the only way you know.

Well, there are quite a few people here, and each of them knows different ways of living, so you’re not making much sense.

Keep up the wall you surround your self with because no one wants to identify with your self proclaimed inner evilness.

OK, this just makes no sense whatsoever, really. Except, maybe, as more psychological projection.

I know that makes you feel good.

Apparantly, posting incoherent and self-righteous screeds makes you feel good.

If I called you scum like you think of your self

This is also incoherent. Are you trying to say that you want to call us scum? But don’t try and also claim that we think of ourselves as scum.

then I would be just like you.

You are just like us. You’re a human being, yes?

I will be the scantimounious one

Oy. The word is spelled “sanctimonious“.

    Maybe “scantimounious” should join “gravitymagnets”.

that you call me because you reject anything that might be good about you or any one else.

You’re not being called sanctimonious because we reject anything that might be good about you or anyone else.

You’re being called sanctimonious because you are, in fact, sanctimonious.

You have a really delusional opinion of yourself if you thing that smug self-righteousness is something good about yourself.

You have lost the ability to distinguish what is good in this world

Actually, most of the people here — I won’t claim all — have a much better ability to distinguish what is good in the world than most religious people who come ranting here.

and you embrace what you feel is bad.

Obviously nonsensical. Even if — again, note the subjunctive; this is not a concession — we had lost the ability to distinguish what is good, then what we would be embracing is what we feel is good. It would be you who feels that it is bad.

    Of course, you’re simply wrong.

Thats your choice and thats why you all feel the need to destroy others.

Obviously false. We do not feel a need to destroy others. Indeed, it is Christians who made the death threats.

Some of you may grow up and get some smarts who knows.

I’m pretty sure that most of us here are smarter than most Christians, at least with regards to ethics and epistemology.

But most of you will wallow in misery forever.

Really? And why should that be? Does anyone here sound particularly miserable?

    I really feel for you.

I kinda suspect that you really feel for you.

    Have fun disecting this post

Thank you; I did. PS: The word is spelled “dissecting”.

I like scantimounious. Scanty thinking and timidity, hiding behind their Psychodad.

  24. Carlie says

Poor Barb. We are the thing that she, and all other fundamentalist Christians, fear most: happy, fulfilled atheists, living good ethical moral lives without any need for a god whatsoever.
I’m so sorry, Barb, that you need to have a menacing God hanging over your shoulder at all times ready to punish you in order to not be a terrible person. I suspect you’re jealous that we don’t need that. Maybe some day you can grow up and learn to be a good person without Daddy telling you what to do all the time.

  25. 'Tis Himself, OM says

Why is it that so many goddists think we’re miserable? I won a sailboat race today. That makes me feel good. My wife has only one more chemotherapy treatment. That makes her feel good. My daughter now has health insurance. That makes her feel great (and relieved).

Sorry, goddists, but atheists are made happy, sad and inbetween by exactly the same things that give you those feelings. Plus we don’t have The Big Guy In The Sky doing his damnedest to make us feel bad. Actually it isn’t TBGITS who makes you feel sinful and inadequate. It’s the folks you pay money to who do that. Some of you give 10% of your earnings to a guy who does his damnedest to make you feel sinful and inadequate. Doesn’t that just fill your heart with joy?

  26. says

I guess it’s the only way you know.

This is one of those familiar–yet revealing of their vast ignorance–refrains of good Christers.

If we only knew what creationists say, or knew the joy of Xian living, well, we’d be so jealous and desirous of such pure and holy happiness and supreme knowledge.

Never mind that a good many of us are refugees from knowing only creationism and “Xian joy,” as we decided to open our minds beyond what Barbara and her ilk have done. But hey, if you really don’t know anything about your opponents, you come up with your own rationalized fictions of what “they must be like.” Danny boy likewise.

Oh well, it saves them from learning and thinking. That’s the only “bliss” that they offer, the ignorance is bliss trope.

Oh, do lose the projection, Sugarbrain. You’re the one who constantly parrots your xian poison. Cupcake is a meme, which is used here for certain types of people. Special people. Like you. Click on this: Cupcake.

I made your day I see.

No, Sugarbrain, you didn’t. Now that you’ve spat your idiocy out, yet again, how about answering the many responses you got? You know, attempt to address the substance of those replies?

I myself pointed out to you that my life is the very opposite of being misery laden. That was you, once again, projecting. Projection. Learn about it, attempt to stop doing it. Then, it might be possible to have an actual conversation with you, even though you are incredibly god-soaked and have let your brain fall into serious disuse.

Lone coyote, You are right family is the best. I also love the water and kayaking. I play tennis for fun and exercise and love the game.
You guys are right in your posts to chastise me for my ranting and raving. I was in a rotten mood, which is no excuse and I apologize.
In reading your post I feel you are all so quick to criticize. I came here from the Beck site to see what kind of people needed to sabatage a poll on God.
Yes, you do hate. Why else would you even bother? You hate someone you say you don’t believe in and also the people who do believe. Why is that? Is it because believers have something you don’t?

He has no concept of compassion or altruism, or helping the little guy out. He’s a loudmouthed mentally unstable sack of shit. That in itself is excusable, but he’s also a loudmouthed sack of shit with access to the media and a built in audience of angry libertarians, and that is unforgiveable.

  33. strange gods before me says

  34. David Marjanović, OM says

I came here from the Beck site to see what kind of people needed to sabatage a poll on God.

    That’s a misunderstanding.

The idea is to demonstrate that Internet polls are worthless. They’re always worthless, because their sample of respondents is self-selected – it is never representative of the population at large. Internet polls cannot show anything. Importantly, this holds even when every respondent casts a single vote (as opposed to writing a little program that casts a bunch a minute). If Beck believes he can use an Internet poll to show anything, he’s wrong, and we’re demonstrating this.

Yes, you do hate. Why else would you even bother? You hate someone you say you don’t believe in and also the people who do believe. Why is that? Is it because believers have something you don’t?
    Anyway have fun with this.
Ps I found out what I wanted to. It’s not a pretty picture.

This is full of misunderstandings. I have to go to bed (over here it’s past midnight), but I’m sure you’ll figure them out on your own.

  35. David Marjanović, OM says

Nothing would give me more pleasure than rearranging his smug, lying, arrogant, self righteous, priviledged face with a crowbar.

ARGH! Speak for yourself. Inflicting that level of pain couldn’t ever give me pleasure.

Yes, you do hate. Why else would you even bother? You hate someone you say you don’t believe in and also the people who do believe. Why is that? Is it because believers have something you don’t?

Please, try to understand this. I don’t hate your deity, I don’t even think it exists. I also don’t hate your belief, I hate your judgment, I hate that it leads you to think you have something that I covet, I hate that it compels you to try and tell me what I lack, I hate that it has blinded you to an opportunity to get to know people who have a genuine and fulfilling view of life which differs from yours. Yes, I hate, but not what you think.

  37. Phalacrocorax, not a particularly smart avian says

    Barb:

Speaking of parroting, how many times have we heard this on this very thread?

Hating god is like hating Santa Claus because I didn’t get a shiny new PlayStation* when I was a child. In other words: pointless.

Do you still believe in Santa, Barb? If not, why?

As for the religious, I don’t hate you. I’ve realized that I haven’t been as… snarky as usual because I actually pity the believers that feel the need to show up here and act sanctimonious** at us.

I don’t go to religiously themed sites and leave nasty comments. Why do you feel the need to do that here? You aren’t trying to convert us (yet), so I assume it’s because you have no other way to make yourself feel good about your faith.

    How sad.

*Note: The original PlayStation wasn’t shiny– it was matte grey. Just aimin’ for accuracy, here.

    **Note: Spelled correctly.

I came here from the Beck site to see what kind of people needed to sabatage a poll on God.

If you had bothered to read or respond to any of the comments, you’d quickly find out why. Poll crashing demonstrates the utter uselessness of online polls, nothing more.

Does it feel good to think of yourself as persecuted, Babs? God and religion shouldn’t be off limits to criticism in a free society, so why does it bother you so much?

Is it because believers have something you don’t?

Sure. You have to drag your ass into church on Sunday mornings, whereas I sleep in, then make waffles.

Ps I found out what I wanted to. It’s not a pretty picture.

Once again, you’ve made us into a boogeyman and you don’t like it. You haven’t got two brain cells to rub together, huh sweetpea?

Care to actually respond to us instead of working yourself up into a hissy fit? Point by point, such as I (and plenty of others) have done? That way we know what we have said that has whipped you up into a fit. (And, you know, you might actually be able to dodge the “stawmanning” accusations. You’re not doing yourself any favors by whining about how base we are without actually pointing to specific comments.)

You never answered my original question: do you know the difference between nihilist and atheist, dumbass?

  39. Tethys-zombi feministe calmar-garou says

    Barb

Do you understand what the word atheist means? From your words it seems you think it means “evil godless heathen baby-eaters”.

That is not what the word actually means. Do go research it a bit before you tell us what we think. Its only fair for you to be as well-informed about the subject as the various commenters that you are condescending to are. (Bad Christian! Bad!)

Would it surprise you to learn that many religions qualify as atheistic?

I do not believe in god, aphrodite, berchta, jesus as god, allah, buddha, shiva, minerva, hera, zeus, poseidon, isis, set, odin, hel, mercury, etc….

    All are equally mythological.

Its just your loving christian religious indoctrination making you recoil in horror at the word atheist. Cuz everybody knows atheists are evil. Common knowledge right?

  40. says

    Barbara:

I came here from the Beck site to see what kind of people needed to sabatage a poll on God.

Oh for…Okay, let’s work on this for a bit. It isn’t sabotage, Barbara. Open internet polls are generally an exercise in confirmation bias. (If you don’t know what confirmation bias means, please look it up. Thank you.) Things an open internet polls are not: scientific. accurate.

I’m sure you’ve heard of a/o read about properly conducted polls, which are done in a controlled, scientific manner. Open internet polls are exercises in silliness and it’s obviously very easy to mess with them. They are never an accurate indicator of how people feel or think.

Now, there’s no reason whatsoever that anyone could not vote on this particular poll, it was an open poll with no restrictions. Anyone with a small degree of code savvy can set up a poll which is restricted. This was not done. The people here who voted, voted their conscience and voted the truth as they see it. No differently from you or anyone else.

By the way, if you think that hordes of christians, freepers and other peoples don’t crash polls, you’d be very, very wrong. Everyone does it, all it does is to highlight just how silly and worthless internet polls are in the first place.

Do you see? It’s not sabotage, it’s just everyday stuff on the net. I think a lot of the reason some people get so very upset about polls is that it comes as a shock to realize there are a substantial amount of people who disagree with their stance on a certain subject. I know it makes me shake my head when I see how many people think educational standards should be tossed down the toilet in favour of particular religious teachings. I do not like that so many people think that sort of thing is a good idea, however, I don’t get upset about silly net polls or make accusations of sabotage, because I already know how worthless net polls are.

Yes, you do hate. Why else would you even bother?

I can’t speak for anyone else, however, I don’t hate. It’s a waste of time and energy. Why else would I bother? Seriously? How about I value the truth and would like for my opinions to be known just as much as the next person? It’s difficult enough being an atheist in the U.S., Barbara, without having people constantly attempt to stifle us and tell us we don’t have rights, we have no business speaking up and so on.

I’ve seen the damage religion can do, and I’m not a fan. So yes, I will speak out about that. People like Beck scare the hell out of me, Barbara. Why? Because they are not content to keep and hold their religious beliefs where they belong, in their homes and their place of worship. No, they want to rule everyone, to dominate, to force their beliefs into law. That’s wrong. Turn it around for a moment, Barbara. How would you like it if people and politicians insisted on making worship of the Olympic Gods the standard? There is, indeed, separation of church and state in the U.S., and that should be the standard which is upheld by all.

People like Beck not only want to force their religion onto everyone, they want to force their particular notion of ethics on everyone else too. People like Beck hate gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people. They want to deny them basic human rights. As far as I’m concerned, that is wrong. I will fight against that sort of shit until the day I die and I will speak out against it at every opportunity.

Yes, I bother. Just like you do.

You hate someone you say you don’t believe in

First of all, there’s no someone there. I don’t hate what doesn’t exist. That’s like me telling you that “yes, you do too hate the invisible fire-breathing dragon in your garage, Barbara! You do, you do, you do!” That would be idiotic, now wouldn’t it? Do you understand why we think you’re saying this to us over and over is idiotic?

There is zero evidence for your particular god, just as there is zero evidence for any of the other thousands of gods which have been dreamed up and manufactured by people on this planet. That is why I don’t believe. It’s nonsense. I believe I mentioned this upthread, but I did my time believing as you do. I studied the bible intensively for 10 years. One thing I can tell you for sure is that it doesn’t make any sense whatsoever. The contradictions, carry overs from earlier gods and worship, etc., is plain to see, if you’d open your mind and your eyes.

and also the people who do believe. Why is that? Is it because believers have something you don’t?

:Sigh: I don’t hate you. I find you annoying, yes. However, I’ll say this once again: if religious people would keep their beliefs where they belong, in their home and place of worship and keep it out of every other aspect of life, I’d wouldn’t have a problem with it.

Please, click that link on Projection I provided you. You’re projecting like crazy. Religious people are the ones who fear, your whole belief system is based on fear. No, it’s not based on love like many claim. It’s based on obedience and fear of punishment. To me, that’s no way to live.

  41. Owlmirror says

I came here from the Beck site to see what kind of people needed to sabatage a poll on God.

How is it sabotage if the option chosen was one offered by the creator of the poll?

Clearly, if he didn’t want to acknowledge the possibility of evolution without God, he should not have had it up there, right?

PS: The word “sabotage” is spelled with an “o”.

Yes, you do hate. Why else would you even bother? .

I think you’re confusing “caring about” with hate.

You’ve been posting repeatedly here. Is it because you hate? Or because you want to voice your opinion? Well, wanting to voice an opinion — like on a poll — is a reason to choose a particular option on that poll, which does not require hate.

Maybe you are posting here because you hate. Well, you’re still projecting your own hate onto everyone else here.

You hate someone you say you don’t believe in and also the people who do believe

That’s ludicrous. Why are you so determinedly obtuse?

Why is that? Is it because believers have something you don’t?

You most certainly have not demonstrated having anything worth wanting.

    Anyway have fun with this.

    Thanks again; I am.

Ps I found out what I wanted to.

    Which was what, exactly?

    It’s not a pretty picture.

You’re not presenting a pretty picture of yourself here, you know.

  42. Barbara says

Wow, I hate Arabs and Mexicans? hmmmm……….Do you usually tell someone who to hate? Hate is not a very useful word for me. Thanks for the cupcake edit. I guess I should have guessed, dummy me. sigh. Tell me what benefit do you get from hate? None that I can see.
Cayote, thanks for the civility, appreciate it.No, I don’t live a life based on fear and obediance. Hardly, I’m a very independant, and quite opinionated person. (as if I have to tell you that) But I see you have figured it out and have all the answers.
As for the haters of Beck, did you know he is having a “Stand with Israel” in Israel later this month? How is that so awful? Stand with courage? I have learned more about our founding fathers from listening to him that I never knew. I am reading about our history and how our constitution came about. That in itself was a miracle getting all the states to agree together. As a matter of fact our whole country is a miracle if you care to read the history of it. Our ragtag army under Washington defeated GR Briton against all odds. It was no coinsidence when you read how it all happened. If not for Devine intervention our USA would might not exist.

  43. says

You hate everything and pretend with each other that you support each other. No you have no idea what it is to have a real friend. You all have no values. You value nothing except each others badness.

    BWAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!

Yeah, emotional support during times of crisis, paying each others’ medical bills, giving each other a place to stay when needed… yeah, no true friendship and support here.

I’m quite sorry that you feel the need to create such obvious lies. Run out of real arguments, have you?

But most of you will wallow in misery forever.

do you really need to tell yourself lies like this? We are not miserable; most of us are much happier now that we’ve left religion behind, since the people who make up religions have a tendency to harm and try to control those who are different.

I made your day I see.

    you wish

    Yes, you do hate.

from someone who listenst to Beck, whose job is to “Other” everyone who isn’t a “Real American”, that’s a rich piece of projection.

Why else would you even bother?

why not? it’s there, and voting on a poll takes what? three seconds?

You hate someone you say you don’t believe in

nope; at most, you can say that some people, those hurt most by religion, hate the specific god-concept their religion has infected their brains with; it’s a bit like hating the flu, even though “flu” is just a name for the symptoms of an infection.

and also the people who do believe.

and THAT is just another of your lies. We hate people who have used their belief to harm others. Nothing so general as you wish to pretend.

Is it because believers have something you don’t?

not really; there are really much better drugs out there than the “opiate of the people”, and community can be had without the grouptink of religious observance; other than that, belief in the supernatural doesn’t offer anything of value. We know, we’ve lived as “believers” for large chunks of our lives.

  44. Carlie says

I have learned more about our founding fathers from listening to him that I never knew.

Pssst… that’s because what he says about them is all wrong. It’s not in any textbook anywhere because he makes it up wholesale.

  45. The Lone Coyote says

His stuff about the founding fathers is mostly lies. Standing with israel? Oh well, that just totally makes up for everything else, right?

I’m on disability, and it’s not a physical disability that anyone can just look at and tell. No wheelchair or anything. What my disability is doesn’t matter, what matters is, according to Beck and his cronies, I’m a lazy shit parasite on the system and should just GETAJOB! (I’m actually looking for one, but that’s also besides the point)

That kind of makes him an enemy of mine. Not on some ideological grounds, literally, he and his people want to make life harder for me and take away what little I do get.

I’m sure he looks like a good man to you, but that’s privilege speaking. I mean it as no insult. Seriously, read about privilege. Try to understand how different things look from where I am, and where many other people are.

  46. Rand E Coyote says

“If not for Devine intervention our USA would might not exist.”

    QFT*.

*Where T means “The Hell is she trying to say?”

  47. triskelethecat says

Although Caine, ‘Tis, and others have pretty much said it all, I want to add this:

Barbara: you don’t really understand the community this is.

We don’t hate Christians. Some of the posters here ARE Christians, Buddhists, Muslims, whatever. We think that belief in an invisible diety – whether it be god, the IPU, FSM – is pretty silly. Without evidence in the supreme being, why believe in them?

But let me tell you this This community would give you the shirt off their back in an emergency. They follow up on you if you are sick, injured, hurting emotionally. They would give you a room in their house if you are homeless. They would give you hugs, chocolate, grog and love and support. Evil, hate-filled atheists? I don’t think so.

  48. Carlie says

Oh, and he’s only “standing with Israel” because Dominionists believe that Israel has to have a certain amount of political power before the Rapture can happen and bring about the end of the world. He’s using them.

  49. says

Barbara, I took the time to write out a long, thoughtful response to you. It would be nice, to say the least, if you’d stop with your assholish projection, insistence on the whole “haters” business and apply yourself to responding in kind.

As for the haters of Beck, did you know he is having a “Stand with Israel” in Israel later this month? How is that so awful?

You don’t spend much time reading what a variety of christians write about what they believe, do you? What’s wrong with that? I’ll tell you – a majority of christians support Israel for one reason alone – they are absolutely convinced that Israel is vital in bringing about the rapture. That Israel gets wiped out in this process is of no matter. The whole “rally for Israel” crap is only because it’s part of the christian belief system.

The actual attitudes behind such things are amazingly ugly and hate filled. Spend some time at Rapture Ready one of these days.

  50. The Lone Coyote says

Carlie says: Oh, and he’s only “standing with Israel” because Dominionists believe that Israel has to have a certain amount of political power before the Rapture can happen and bring about the end of the world. He’s using them.

    What s/he said

  51. amphiox says

“If not for Devine intervention our USA would might not exist.”

Perhaps she is referring to hitherto unknown Founding Mother, Liberty Devine?

  52. says

I have learned more about our founding fathers from listening to him that I never knew.

being fed lies is not “knowing”; it’s the opposite of knowing. I assure you, you knew more about the Founding Fathers before you swallowed the revisionist lies Beck peddles. Also, saying that only a few sentences after saying “No, I don’t live a life based on fear and obediance. Hardly, I’m a very independant, and quite opinionated person” is just painfully ironic. Taking your history lessons on your own country from propagandists like Beck marks you as the opposite of an independent thinker. But maybe it’s not your fault. Maybe no one taught you how to do research or think independently. It happens, and it’s an entirely remediable condition. But not if you insist on taking your information from a TV/Radio talkinghead

As a matter of fact our whole country is a miracle if you care to read the history of it. Our ragtag army under Washington defeated GR Briton against all odds. It was no coinsidence when you read how it all happened. If not for Devine intervention our USA would might not exist.

see? completely ahistorical, revisionist bullshit. Colonies all over the world have defeated foreign invasions, because “home-team advantage” means a lot (more so when both armies fight with the same or similar weaponry), and thrice so when one uses advanced guerrilla tactics while the other uses antiquated, “gentlemanly” methods of fighting.

Besides, the existence of Canada makes it pretty obvious that losing wouldn’t have been the end of the world; hell, slavery would have been abolished much quicker if Americans had lost their war for independence!

  53. Nerd of Redhead says

Barb, do you have any conclusive physical evidence for your imaginary deity. Evidence that will pass muster with scientists, magicians, and professional debunkers, as being of divine, and not natural (scientifically explained), origin? Like an eternally burning bush. Or ditto for your book of mythology/fiction showing that the flud, exodus, or jebus actually happened as written? That is why we see you and your fellow godbots as delusional fools. You believe without evidence. Which is why I feel sorry for you, caught up in those lies…

  54. says

That in itself was a miracle getting all the states to agree together. As a matter of fact our whole country is a miracle if you care to read the history of it.

What makes you think we don’t know history? By the way, Pharyngula is global, not everyone here is American, okay?

You might want to look at learning actual history, Barbara, not the slanted, edited, biased crap that people like Beck push.

This country is not a miracle. The majority of the ‘founding fathers’ were deists and did not want a christian country, which is why it was set up with separation of church and state. Also, societies (at least healthy ones) evolve. People like Beck (and yourself) would prefer to go backwards, and re-institute the dark ages.

By the way, if you’re interested in history, you might want to try learning about a whole lot more than ‘merica.

  55. says

    @triskelethecat:

To jive off of your statement:

    @Barbara:

In addition to the things Triskelethecat said, I would say the vast majority of the atheists here would stand with you if the US government was trying to limit your religious freedoms.

  56. says

    Jadehawk:

hell, slavery would have been abolished much quicker if Americans had lost their war for independence!

That’s the truth. A whole helluva lot of bloodshed would have been avoided too.

  57. says

and in any case, taking history lessons from someone who believes (some) Native Americans are descended from a “lost tribe” of Israelites is an act of epic ignorance in and of itself

  58. says

    Jadehawk:

and in any case, taking history lessons from someone who believes (some) Native Americans are descended from a “lost tribe” of Israelites is an act of epic ignorance in and of itself

No shit. I’m amazed anyone can buy into such obvious crap and consider themselves a thinking being.

P.S.: five bucks says the name David Barton is about to get dropped :-p

You aren’t suckering me into that bet!

  59. Barbara says

Hey, I learned something here. I love that you would give the shirt off your back, so to speak. My impressions are rising. Good conversation doesn’t have to have the derogatory adjectives thrown in, but I guess thats your conversing language. You all talk in the plural, we think we say we feel. Where is the individuality?
I believe in the pay it forward also.
I see you are knowlegable in the Bible, rapture etc.
Besides that what is going on in the middle east is deplorable as they want to destroy Israel. It is a very dangerous situation. Israel is called “little satan” and the USA is “big satan” as goes Israel so goes the USA.
I read the history books. Beck influenced me to learn and I’m glad for it. History repeats and if we don’t know our history how do we not repeat it. Beck is not an evil person. He is a clown and a crybaby, but so what. He is making a whole lot of people aware of what is going on around them.
You guys will love this…..I am also a Tea Party participant. Don’t ya love it?

  60. says

    @Barbara:

The only “Big Satan” I see with the USA is the fact that people who are in the Tea Party – far right fundamentalist conservative Christians – want to kill me and people like me, or force me to live the rest of my life as a lie, or treat me like a second class citizen.

  61. Tethys-zombi feministe calmar-garou says

    Barb spouts:

I have learned more about our founding fathers from listening to him that I never knew.

Emphasis added because it’s the only accurate statement you have made so far.

Yes, you never knew any history in the first place, so it is very easy for Bleck to feed you his twisted version.

As pointed out above by people who do know actual history, (rather than Becks propaganda)FRANCE came to the aid of Washington’s rebel army and enabled them to declare their independence.

I bet he has convinced you to buy gold too?

  62. Makyui says

    Barbara says:

Do you usually tell someone who to hate?

Oh, so you have a problem with telling people who to hate? Then why are you doing it to us:

    Yes, you do hate.

    Practice what you preach, sister.

Why else would you even bother?

Maybe because religious people don’t keep it to themselves. Maybe because they want everyone else to believe like they do, and they write policies and pass laws based on their supersition. And those beliefs entail taking away people’s rights. Teaching them that they’re scum from birth. Stifling their education. Encouraging violence. Hate. Murder. Treating people like shit. Taking away their humanity.

People like me, Barbara. And Katherine, and Josh. And millions of others.

But nevermind all that, you don’t really give a shit if I have basic human rights, or if I live or die, by someone else’s hand or by my own, do you? Maybe you’re just like them? Maybe you see us as nasty rebellious sinners who deserve to die because instead of hating ourselves on the basis of what some suit says God doesn’t like about us, we’re living true to ourselves?

Nooo, surely we’re just doing it because we’re bitter and spiteful. Not because we give a shit about humanity. Human rights ain’t worth fighting for, are they, Barb?

Or, could it be, you never bothered to consider that?

It was no coinsidence when you read how it all happened.

Yeah sure, Barb. No nation or society had ever fought and put up boundaries and a government before the US did it.

If not for Devine intervention our USA would might not exist.

Deee-vine intervention, eh? So who was it that slaughtered all the people who were living here long before the British came over, then? Was that your god’s plan? Did he make that happen, or was that just a happy accident?

Would you mind showing us just where this Dee-vine innervenshun took place, and how we can distinguish it from every other time a bunch of marauders spilled blood and called the land their own?

  63. nemo the derv says

psst, Barbara. Let me you in on a little secret.
    We’re not actually atheists here.
We worship the true maker and master of the universe Cthulu.
It’s just that it is a sin of the 116th order to mention his name so we say there is none. I’m breaking the silence and will have to pay penance with the lash but I think it’s important that you heed my words for the sake of your immortal soul.
Cthulu eats the souls of the wicked and craps them down the celestial toilet(ever wonder what black holes were? now you know.)
Trashing stupid and poorly thought out internet polls is the way we pray. Who are you to say that I should not practice my religion?
Now you might ask, “What proof or evidence do you have the Cthulu even exists, much less what he wants from you?”
My answer is simple. I don’t need proof. I HAVE FAITH.
    Sound familiar?

(I apologize to the the true faithful that I have outed with this message) :)

  64. triskelethecat says

OK, Barbara. You want individuality? Here goes. I have shared things with Pharyngula posters that my family doesn’t know. From the various people, I have gotten love, sympathy, cell phone calls, and multiple offers of help. When I was having a panic attack, I posted on a page and had many, many replies that checked on me for the entire time, until I was better. I had texts, emails, cell phone calls. This is a community. If I go anywhere in the world that a Pharyngula member is (we call ourselves the Horde), I know I have a friend I can visit. I know that no matter where I am, if someone from Pharyngula is there, I can get help. This is a community. This is friendship, love, what a group should be.

No, we don’t always agree. We may, like families and friends do, fight, disagree, take our toys and go home for a while. But we KNOW that the Horde is there for us. I find that comforting. My race, religion (or lack thereof), sexual preferences don’t matter. The Horde doesn’t care. All they care about is that I need help and they have help to offer.
And they ask for little in return. No tithing. No commands to worship their version of a deity. No threats of eternal hellfire. Only friendship. Help if I am in the position to give it and it is needed, but help is not demanded.

Until you understand our community, you won’t understand why we use plurals. We are NOT a hive mind. We are just a community that cares.

  65. The Lone Coyote says

    Jesus Fuckballs Barb……

You just don’t get it. I held out longer than the others but fuck this.

You love that we’d give you the shirt off our backs? Well of course, that’s the tea party party line. “Gimme gimme gimme, no I don’t want to pay for someone else’s healthcare, I got mine! All those sick and poor people can just GET A JAWB!”

The idea behind human altruism and kindness, though this is a bit more of a guideline than an actual ‘rule’ and such, is that it’s supposed to be reciprocal. Tea partiers are an angry selfish bunch who want to get but not give.

You have lost my respect, I wouldn’t piss on you if you were on fire (though I’d gladly piss on you any other time).

  66. says

    Where is the individuality?

you’re tarring us as a group, so we respond as a group; you can start talking to and about us on an individual level, then there will be no need to respond with plural pronouns.

Israel is called “little satan” and the USA is “big satan” as goes Israel so goes the USA.

do you even know what “Satan” is in the Islamic tradition? it’s the same thing that Beck calls “secular humanism”; it means they see Israel and the USA as things that detract from a religious life.

History repeats and if we don’t know our history how do we not repeat it.

but you don’t know your history, you’ve just demonstrated that with your last post.

Beck is not an evil person. He is a clown and a crybaby, but so what.

actually, he’s as close to “evil” as is possible, considering he constantly rails against people who are different, spreads lies and conspiracy theories, and incites hatred against anyone who isn’t considered a “real american” by him. And that “crybaby” thing? If they were honest tears they would be nothing to be ashamed of (men not being allowed to express emotion is another thing religious cultures are good at enforcing, for no good reason); but they’re fake tears, so they just show him to be a liar some more.

You guys will love this…..I am also a Tea Party participant. Don’t ya love it?

this is such a shocking revelation, I might just fall asleep.

  67. Makyui says

Besides that what is going on in the middle east is deplorable as they want to destroy Israel.

Would you even care about Israel if it wasn’t tied into your religious mythology?

  68. Audley Z. Darkheart OM, purveyor of candy and lies says

    Babs,
I didn’t think it was possible, but you’re getting even less coherent. Is it time for a nap before you have a melt-down?

Do you usually tell someone who to hate?

I, uh, wut? Too bad you’re not bright enough to get strange god’s point.

You admitted that you follow Beck. Who does he tell you to hate? Atheists, Muslims, “illegal immigrants”, George Soros, Planned Parenthood, ACORN, liberals, socialists, communists*, Democrats, welfare recipients, the list goes on and on.

*Note: Liberals, socialists, and communists aren’t the same thing, just so we’re clear.

I’m a very independant, and quite opinionated person. (as if I have to tell you that) But I see you have figured it out and have all the answers.

As long as someone has spoon fed you those opinions beforehand, right?

As for the haters of Beck, did you know he is having a “Stand with Israel” in Israel later this month? How is that so awful?

Not everyone supports Israel unilaterally, sweetheart.

(Before you accuse me of OMG ANTISEMITISM!, just bear in mind that you don’t know me, so you had better check yourself before you wreck yourself.)

Did you know that many believe that Israel must be a viable state before the Eschaton can happen? Hate to break it to you, but Glenn Beck wants to hasten the end of the world, not bring peace to a troubled area.

I have learned more about our founding fathers from listening to him that I never knew.

Uh, I think the word you were looking for was “ever”.

You’ve learned nothing but lies from Daddy Beck. The US isn’t a Christian nation (re-read the First Admendment, please) and many of the founders were not Christian.

Have you ever taken a look at the Jefferson Bible?

That in itself was a miracle getting all the states to agree together. As a matter of fact our whole country is a miracle if you care to read the history of it.

I have and, no, it’s not. Beck thinks it’s “miraculous” because he is a Mormon— in their faith, the US is the chosen land (Jesus traveled here after his resurrection to teach the native people or some shit). If you’re not a Mormon, why the hell would you believe this?

What can be said about the formation of the US is that we are a product of shrewd negotiations. For example: Ever wonder why the House of Representatives has membership based on population, but the Senate gives each state two representatives? It wasn’t god intervening, trust me on this.

Our ragtag army under Washington defeated GR Briton against all odds.

Not really. Our “army” (if we can even really call it that) had some brilliant tactical planners. You might want to look up a man named Tadeusz Kościuszko as an example.

Note: It’s spelled “Britain”. Can you spell anything correctly? That’s really starting to annoy the hell out of me.

If not for Devine intervention our USA would might not exist.

Good job, Babs! You have devalued the contributions of all of the people who planned, fought, and died for their ideals by giving the credit to god.

Of course, if you can offer up concrete proof that god favored our side (which historians have not found), I’d love to see it.

How do you feel about the divine right of kings? It’s the same concept, just applied to the monarchy. Were they actually chosen by god, too?

Why can’t god make up its mind?

  69. Ing says

    Sigh

Barbra and Dan really brought me down. It’s a reminder that when people use the term “souless” it isn’t just a bullshit religious term. People like Barbra and Dan deny our person-hood. They deny that we love, hurt, feel, and care about things. I can’t think of anything more hateful than this attitude of presuming people are valueless and incapable of love.

Is it because believers have something you don’t?

I’ll cop to it that there are time I hate believers. Or rather I hate the system that exists that believers are a part of. I hate the idea that I am largely unable to live the life *I* want to. That harms no one, is beneficial and caring to the people I love and is supportive and nurturing. But because it doesn’t fit with what the standard view, I can’t least it bring down scorn and hate to myself and the people I love. Being open means risking cops who scoff at Supreme Court rulings and know that even an illegal unwarranted arrest still makes my life miserable and they’re at no risk of punishment for it. It means hate mail and death threats and other people not wanting any kids I may have to be around them or trusting us to look after their kids. It means possible visits from self righteous christian social workers who want to force people into the ideal 1 man 1 woman family. It means pain and suffering.

Dan and Barbra you are part of the system that causes real consequences for people who are open about who they are. You are part of the system that makes threats, that bullies kids, that persecutes and sneers and torments. And you dare blame US for that? You call us cowards for trying to avoid the situation YOU caused? You look at this situation and call us cowards instead of lamenting that there is a situation that makes people who are different afraid for their happiness, property and lives!? You people are disgraceful. You are part of an oppressive reality and you reveal in the fact that those who aren’t like you are tormented. You force us to sneak and to lie and to introduce people at thanksgiving as “friends”. You are bigots and take hand clapping goat fucking glee in this bigotry.

The reason that some of us feel the need to hide and not express our selves even to our neighbors and friends is damn fucking rational enough to “hate” you. Because you defile and degrade MY life. I want a world where we can be left alone and you want one where people are forced into your little molds to be just like you. And you call me hateful? You oppress and add stress to my life and dare get offended when you’re insulted? We’re people you fucking idiots! People you’ve forced into shadows and now you’re upset that we’re poking our noses out. I don’t hate you but I long for the day that what you stand for and what you love is as stigmatized and loathed as the Klan.

    Fuck you.

  70. Tethys-zombi feministe calmar-garou says

    Barb you ignorant fuckwit:

If Israel continues to be hateful, murdering, and oppressive to the people who are living on the land that they took by armed force, they absolutely deserve to lose all American support.

  71. Josh, Official SpokesGay says

Would you even care about Israel if it wasn’t tied into your religious mythology?

    Nope. Of course not.

What really chafes is what someone upstream said; we’d all be backing Barbara if her religious beliefs were being oppressed by the gov’t. We really do care about that stuff, and we really do think in terms of universal principles, not just “this should be protected because it’s my opinion.” And she wouldn’t do the same. I’m sure she’s right happy that us queers and disabled have to fucking struggle to be treated as humans under the law. And Barb, don’t go saying that’s a wild assumption out of the blue. For god’s sake look at the company you keep!

  72. Audley Z. Darkheart OM, purveyor of candy and lies says

PS Babs: Has Daddy Beck mentioned the importance of French assistance in the American Revolution? We couldn’t have done it without them.

  73. Ing says

Beck is not an evil person. He is a clown and a crybaby, but so what. He is making a whole lot of people aware of what is going on around them.
You guys will love this…..I am also a Tea Party participant. Don’t ya love it?

Oh so Beck convinced you to be part of the Tea Party. The people who fucking played chicken with my grandmother’s social security check, her only way to keep her fucking house!? Beck is evil.

Oh and to answer your question. What you have that we don’t that might make us bitter. Freedom.

  74. says

Barbara, again, no response to my thoughtful post to you, which answered your supposed questions. (#550) Now you’ve outed yourself as nothing more than a troll. You are actually pathetic.

He is a clown and a crybaby, but so what. He is making a whole lot of people aware of what is going on around them.

No, he’s outright lying to people and promoting the lies of others. Doesn’t that god of yours have something to say about lying, liars and hanging out with liars? This is another problem with christians, they tend to be hypocrites. You’re demonstrating a fair amount of that hypocrisy yourself. That’s nothing to be proud of, nor is it harmless.

    Where is the individuality?

Where’s yours, Cupcake? You spout the christian party line and the teabagger party line. You “learn” revisionist history. No individuality or thinking there.

Pharyngula is filled with a whole lot of intelligent, well-educated people. While we do agree on a number of issues, there’s a whole lot of stuff we don’t agree on. This is a well established, long standing community of people. As has been pointed out, numerous times, we actually know each other.

I believe in the pay it forward also.

“Pay it forward”? Who needs that sort of silly crap? What the people here do, they do because it’s the right thing to do, they do because we *know each other and care about one another*. The people who populate this community are all ethical people. Ethical without a hovering Psychodad who is all ready with nasty punishments if you aren’t “good”. Being good is something a great many christians are extremely lousy at and they always have their cop out – “oh, god will forgive me”.

    :snort:

Atheists, on the other hand, we know we’re responsible for our actions and take responsibility. Unlike odoriferous weasel farts like most christians.

  75. says

    Audley,

(Before you accuse me of OMG ANTISEMITISM!, just bear in mind that you don’t know me, so you had better check yourself before you wreck yourself.)

Sorry, but this comment gave me such a large smirk. :D

  76. says

If Israel continues to be hateful, murdering, and oppressive to the people who are living on the land that they took by armed force, they absolutely deserve to lose all American support.

don’t be silly. slaughtering and oppressing a people to take their land is like the one big, biblical thing the US has done, history-wise, so it’s not like they’re going to suddenly start condemning Israel for doing it, too.

  77. Ing says

Beck and the Teaparty have compared people like me to Nazis. They have defiled the memory of my relatives who fought in WWII or suffered under Hitler. They use the memory of their blood, sweat and corpses to fuel their own interests.

They have called for basically the destruction of a lot of people here either literally or spiritually. You have called for us to be starved and abandoned in the street, or stigmatized and tormented.

You have cast baseless shameless doubts on a fellow believer’s faith and have compared him to Hitler because he disagrees with your financial ideology.

You honestly do not see this as evil?

Barbra you and people like you sap my freedom, threaten those I love, put stress and hardship on me and mine, and deny my humanity. There is nothing I can say to you, not a single profanity or insult, that can compare to your obscenity.

  78. Makyui says

What really chafes is what someone upstream said; we’d all be backing Barbara if her religious beliefs were being oppressed by the gov’t. We really do care about that stuff, and we really do think in terms of universal principles, not just “this should be protected because it’s my opinion.”

    Exactly.

We don’t do what we do out of some self-serving hope for some amazing reward sometime in the future possibly maybe. And we don’t do it out of fear of some horrible punishment from some unseen bogeyman. We do it because it’s the good thing to do.

But we’re the ones without values, or lives, or good will, or substance. We’re just empty bitter evil.

    *snort*

  79. Ing says

    wtf is “pay it forward”?

To humanistic people it is random acts of kindness. Do an act of kindness to someone else in honor of someone who has done one to you.

In the Beckian mindset I imagine it’s more of “eye for an eye” since they seem less concerned with helping people and more of making sure those who we have set aside to suffer do not get undeserved aid.

  80. Tethys-zombi feministe calmar-garou says

    Jadehawk,

You silly atheist, demanding ethical consistency and possessing a firm grasp of US history. How dare you! ;D

  81. Ing says

Hey Barbra, Did Beck’s history that he taught you talk about how in WWII people like him would have sent some of my relatives to concentration Oups sorry I mean detainment camps and seize their property?

Or how people like him slaughtered and raped some of my ancestors and drove them to extinction?

Or how his church engaged in slavery and sexual abuse and fraud and taught that God himself ordained the black man as inferior stock?

Or did he not mention that history?

  82. says

To humanistic people it is random acts of kindness. Do an act of kindness to someone else in honor of someone who has done one to you.

thanks. I still fail to see what this has to do with genuine caring within a community, the way Barb seems to have used it. Also, am I the only one slightly disturbed at having a social thing (random acts of kindness) phrased in economic terms?

  83. Josh, Official SpokesGay says

Also, am I the only one slightly disturbed at having a social thing (random acts of kindness) phrased in economic terms?

No, you’re not the only one. That’s what’s so delightful about America; everything—-and I mean everything—-is phrased in either economic terms or sports metaphors. Hate.

  84. Tethys-zombi feministe calmar-garou says

Apparently to Barb, watching a movie makes up for being an ignorant fuckwit who is enabling an evil, racist, fear-mongering agenda.

  85. says

    Jadehawk:

Also, am I the only one slightly disturbed at having a social thing (random acts of kindness) phrased in economic terms?

    No.

I’d bet money that Barb’s “pay it forward” philosophy is straight from the cheesy, horrible movie. I doubt she’d know an actual ethical act, let alone one done out of care for another person if one flew up her ass, out of her mouth and bit off her nose.

  86. Ing says

Or maybe it’s the other way around. Maybe it’s not that the believers have something we don’t but we have what they don’t?

Yes non-orthodox lifestyles are stigmatized and threatened, but…we also do live them. We’re at least honest to ourselves if not to the outside world. People like Bachman and Gallagher and the other purity police seem to take issues about sexual conformity very close to home. Gallagher gets upset that other people don’t sacrifice or compromise their sexuality for marriage like SHE did. Mr Bachman is upset that other people get to have the sex that HE can’t because God forced him into a loveless marriage with his wife (by her own account).

And it has to be that way, that has to be the right, natural, GOD ordained way doesn’t it? Otherwise it means people like Bachman and Gallagher and Barbra here sacrificed and denied themselves for nothing. They say the conservative values are about “fairness” in preventing people from cheating the system…is that it? We cheated the system that you take part of that forces you into a mold you don’t fit?

Is it because your religion spends all its energy degrading and deny humanity and human nature? That you can’t have sex that you’d want, do what you want, love what you want? And we just believe in being nice and not obeying the arbitrary restrictions? Dan, Barbra have either of you had sex with someone who wasn’t your spouse? Or of the same sex? Would you if your spouse said it was ok? If they wanted to join? Or would you deny yourself even though it hurts no one?

Maybe you’re a victim of this orthodox plan as much as we are and just resent that we’re awake and not willing to play along.

  87. nemo the derv says

Hey Barbara, have you ever read the Jefferson Bible?
Look it up. you find it a quick read and it will give you a fairly good insight as to what Thomas Jefferson thought of religion.
I bet Glenn Beck never told you that little “Founding Father” tidbit.

  88. Audley Z. Darkheart OM, purveyor of candy and lies says

    Babs (again, sigh):

Good conversation doesn’t have to have the derogatory adjectives thrown in, but I guess thats your conversing language.

And why the fuck not? “Derogatory adjectives” have their place, especially when I want to point out that you’re a dumbass.

I believe in the pay it forward also.

What’s with this “also” bullshit? I don’t pay it forward. I help people with no expectation of reward or that I will be helped in the future. I help people because I want to make the world a better place.

Besides that what is going on in the middle east is deplorable as they want to destroy Israel.

So, it’s all honky dory that Israel is continuing to expand into lands that they have no claim to? In your opinion, what legitimizes their actions?

The Middle East is a powder keg and blindly supporting Israel isn’t going to stop the violence.

Also, I’d like to know specifically who “they” are.

    read the history books.

I doubt this. If you did, you’d know that Glenny is full of shit.

Out of curiosity, what history books have you read?

He is making a whole lot of people aware of what is going on around them.

No. As I established in my last obnoxiously long post, he is lying to people. He is convincing them to support policies that aren’t in their best interest. He is telling you that as an American you are exceptional when, quite frankly, you are not.

He has an agenda beyond fortune and celebrity, but I’m not sure what it is yet. It’s not good, whatever it is.

You guys will love this…..I am also a Tea Party participant. Don’t ya love it?

So what sort of government assistance do you receive*, Babs?

*Note: There is no shame in turning to the government for help. However, I kind of loathe the get the government out of my Medicaid! hypocrites.

Two questions you have ducked that I’d like an answer to: Do you think we’re nihilists (and provide a working definition, please) and why do you feel the need to be a preachy Glenn-bot here?

  89. says

    Ing:

Maybe you’re a victim of this orthodox plan as much as we are and just resent that we’re awake and not willing to play along.

No. Barbara showed up here to spit her toxic crap all over, then whined, moaned and complained about cusswords, naturally ignoring all substance.

She then flounced, many a time, but kept on comin’ back. Spat more toxic crap all over. Whined about not getting “proper” responses. I and many others took the time to respond, thoughtfully and with no cuss words in the vain hope that Barbara might engage her brain. Nope. Nothing from Barb except more rhetoric and toxic crap. And some of the worst spelling I’ve ever encountered on the net.

Barb is one of those who craves power, who wants to dominate and persecute others. A very nasty critter, Barb. She’s walking around with a fistful of ugly, looking to club people over the head with it.

  90. says

So, it’s all honky dory that Israel is continuing to expand into lands that they have no claim to? In your opinion, what legitimizes their actions?

    Jadehawk:

“Greater Israel”; it is necessary for the Rapture, according to some versions

    Oh, I know. ;)

I was just wondering if Babs actually knows this as well or if she’s just reciting sound-bites. Neither would surprise me (although, I’m leaning more “sound-bites” ‘cos Babs isn’t really bright enough to plan that far in advance).

  92. Tethys-zombi feministe calmar-garou says

    Ing

Didn’t Nietzsche consider Christianity a form of nihilism?

    I do love your humor.

  93. Ing says

Although he considered both Christianity and Buddhism to be nihilistic, decadent religions, Nietzsche did consider Buddhism more realistic because it posed objective problems and didn’t use the concept of God. In all religious history, Nietzsche believed, Buddhism was the only positivistic religion because it struggles against actual suffering, which is experienced as fact or illusion (the concept of Maya) in various traditions of Buddhism. Christianity, on the contrary, struggles against sin, while suffering can have a redemptive quality.

  94. nemo the derv says

    Ing,

Didn’t Nietzsche consider Christianity a form of nihilism?

    Kind of.

His argument, the one where he says “god is dead”, was not so much that xtianity was nihilist but , instead, insufficient to answer modern moral questions and that a new paradigm of free thinking was needed. In other words, god is no longer doing his job so he must be dead.

Of course, as you can imagine, it’s hard for free thinking to flow when religion is still around.

That is what separates us and what you find so offensive. Caring about others no matter who they might be is what its all about.

Back to being a hypocrite and a liar, I see. Yes, keep telling yourself that, Barb. You’re the one who wants to deny others basic human rights – is that caring? Is that helping? Why no, it’s not! You wouldn’t help anyone who didn’t believe and live as you do, Barb, that fact is as plain as the nose on your face. Let me know when you take in a gay friend (as if!) who is in a medical crisis and make sure there’s not only room for him, but for his partner as well. Ya know, the little things.

  103. The Lone Coyote says

If you care so much about others WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU IN THE TEA PARTY?

That’s like pulling the old “I’m not racist, I have lots of black friends!” line while belonging to the Klan. Piss off, shit licker.

  104. Josh, Official SpokesGay says

  107. Ing says

Seriously, Barbra do you not get that these entitlement programs you’re against HELP PEOPLE. Some people NEED them. Some of us would have to choose between food and medication without them. You know nothing about caring for others. You care not for the indigenous people who you gleefully stole from. You know nothing of helping the poor that is oppressed by the system that you support. You know nothing of helping women, who, under your religion and government, would be reduce to baby machines. You know nothing of helping LGBT people deal with bullying and discrimination. You know nothing of fixing the problems that your ancestors created in the colonized world.

You are the most hateful person here Barbara. You rejoice at seeing us suffer for your gain! If that is blessing your God delivers, then it is neither wanted nor accepted.

God Bless all the women in Ohio, Kansas, and South Dakota must be punished with lifelong hardships for using their God-given sexuality. God Bless, the gay and lesbian couples who can’t receive federal aids for their partner. God Bless the fact that AIDS victims are demonized and dehumanize in order to further demonize and dehumanize gay people. God Bless the old man who works hard and still cannot afford to heal himself. God Bless the outrageous and obscene amount of nepotism and greed that the Tea-party supports. God Bless the Christians who are valued as heretics and false simply because they deviate from literalism or because they happened to also be proud of being gay. God Bless the pagans and heathens who are constantly reminded that our culture doesn’t care for them.
Yes God Bless it all. God won’t fix it. That’s up to us – the people you hate Barbara. You can have your Blessing. We will care for people instead at the expense of being called hateful.

Also, I’m totally taking you up on that bet. I’ve helped many Christians (and a few Muslims) and even a few Republicans in my past.

That is what separates us and what you find so offensive. Caring about others no matter who they might be is what its all about.

That’s the only true thing you’ve said, but only because you wrongly think yourself on the right side of this, when in fact you’re on the divisive, hateful side.

When you go around and tell the world about how you had a great time with your husband / boyfriend last night, I have to grin and bear the fact that if I say JACK SHIT about my wonderful night with my boyfriend, someone will be offended.

When I go out wearing clothes of my proper sex, but improper grammar, I have to suffer it. If I decided to wear a dress to the store I could be beat up, harassed, or KILLED for it.

I live in a state where if I am seen holding my boyfriend’s hand and someone beats me up for being gay – I can go to jail because my fucking state attorney general refuses to believe that sodomy laws were taken off the books.

SO FUCK YOU. There is nothing wrong with being gay, bi, transgender, lesbian, whatever – but thanks to the poor sensibilities of fuckoffs like you, I can be killed for what is only natural to me.

  130. Mattir-ritated says

Barb, you are a total maroon. I care about people whom I know from Pharyngula. However, I also care about people in my meatspace community – I support the food pantry (with a lot of actual money, not just by donating cans of green beans to the Boy Scout food drive once a year), I help with babysitting or household chores for people with illnesses or new babies (I do this even when the family in question has a lot more children than I consider responsible), I make blankets, scarves, and hats for local charities, I volunteer with local youth and fiber arts groups, and I pick up trash along the road and the river quite often.

I’ve met dozens of other Pharyngula regulars. Every one of them seems to be involved in their communities to the same degree – only the details vary.

Also, I would point out that many of the people I help via my volunteer work or personal friendships listen to Glenn Beck and his ilk and/or belong to religious groups that I consider seriously destructive. But they live in my community, and I help them as much as I can. I would even help you if you lived near me, but I’m glad that none of the folks I know who listen to right-wing talk radio or belong to odious churches are named Barbara…

  131. Tethys-zombi feministe calmar-garou says

    Barb

    Naive.

Also ignorant and seemingly proud of the fact.

I’m so glad that you are just fine with LGBT people as long as they don’t dare identify themselves as such.

I bet you’re also just fine with people of other ethnic backgrounds, just as long as they don’t try to live or work where you live and work.

    Bigot.

  132. Carlie says

Caring about others no matter who they might be is what its all about.

Um-hm. Tell me, Barbara, would you (and presumably your church) be willing to donate money and time and energy to people in need if the stipulation was that you never mention your religion at all to them? No “Jesus loves you”s, no “We’re doing this out of our love of God”, no salvation tracts handed out along with the bribes (like the disgusting Samaritan’s Purse group does), no “sit through a service and we’ll give you food” like the Salvation Army used to be. You’d have to give simply for the sake of giving, no strings attached, no bribery to convince people to join your religion, no credit given to you or your god. Just honest to goodness caring and giving.
How fast do you think the donations would dry up then? Pretty damned fast.

  133. Mattir-ritated says

Barbara, straight people announce that they are straight ALL THE FREAKING TIME. What do you think the wedding rings, pictures of husbands/wives on the desk at work, the casual “my wife and I were on vacation in Florida last winter” mention at the cocktail party…

For that matter, I’m pretty sure that the comments my daughter got at Boy Scout camp about her body were motivated, at least in part, by the commenters’ wish to announce their heterosexuality.

    Stick the damn flounce already.

  134. says

Yes you’ve silenced us with how hateful you are Barbara.

And here’s the kicker: Even with my most uppity gayness, I’ll still help you, I care that you get medical help and have the rights to control your body. I care if you are being exploited or your freedom being suppressed. Even if you are a pitiful hateful scum.

  135. says

    Barbara:

    So shut your pie hole

Go fuck yourself, dearie. Preferably with a decaying porcupine, inserted backwards. Just who in the fuck do you thing you are? Besides the obviously pathetic, intellectually stunted asshole you’ve proven yourself to be?

So……I am nieve, this is a gay, lesbian site?

No, it isn’t. It is however, a safe haven for many peoples. We are not judgmental here and all people are helped and considered to have the right to a place in which they can post and talk about themselves and their life situations in safety and support.

Okay, so I agree I’m a dummie and straight.

You’re definitely stupid. Who gives a shit if you’re straight? I’m bisexual. Does that make a difference?

    So what, who cares?

About you? Next to no one that I can see. You’re one ugly person, Barbara. Who cares about GLBTI peoples? We do. We care about all people who are having their rights stomped on by odoriferous weasel farts such as yourself.

Bit of advice no one really cares so why do you have to advertise it.

It’s rather obvious that stupid people such as yourself do care, Barb. You’re the ones who keep trying to take people’s rights away. You’re the ones who are terrified of basic education. You’re the ones who can’t stand a same sex couple being affectionate or married – look at your own words, you fucking, festering, flaming ass pimple.

Do straights go around proclaiming they’re straight.

You obviously do, you dipshit cupcake.

    Just shut up about it.

NO, I WON’T. Can’t fucking stand it, can you? Baby Buttfucked Jesus, could you possibly be a worse example of a human being, Barb? Oh yeah, show us how you care for others, Cupcake.

It’s the whinning that is a turn off.

Who in the fuck cares about what turns you off? :Ick: It’s not about you and it’s not about what you like or dislike, you assclown. It’s about basic human rights. Don’t like it? Here’s a thought: shut the fuck up.

No one cares if you are or aren’t whatever it is that you think you are.

You are such a fucking liar, Barb. If you didn’t care, you wouldn’t have been arsed to get all upsetty about it. Liar. Fucking liar. Hypocrite, too. Better get on your knees, cupcake, that god of yours ain’t gonna be happy with you.

    Chill.

Take your own advice, Cupcake. Here’s better, why don’t you stop lying about leaving here? Go back to your own ugly teabaggers, cupcake. Let them comfort you in your time of hypocritical, lying bigotry and douchebaggery.

  136. Carlie says

Do straights go around proclaiming they’re straight.

Seriously, who the fuck doesn’t have a spell check? Even my fucking smart phone has a dictionary. Do I need to point out that you are on the internet where dictionaries are available for free? Here’s a link to my favorite (I like the crosswords): Merriam Webster.

So shut your pie hole or I will spell everything wrong.

Oh, look! Someone’s about to have a break down! What were you saying about that kind of language earlier?

Leave out all the vowels. Ever try that it is still readable.

Yes, dear Barbara. If you were aware of all internet traditions, you would know that to “disemvowel” means to purposefully remove all of the vowels from a post.

It’s kind of weird that you would do it to yourself, though.

So……I am nieve, this is a gay, lesbian site?

Dude. Seriously. Dude. Have you even looked at anything else on this blog?

    *Naïve.

Okay, so I agree I’m a dummie and straight. So what, who cares?

I couldn’t give a great flying fuck what your sexual orientation is, Babs. But preachy idiots annoy the shit out of me.

Oh wait, do you think I’m gay?

Do straights go around proclaiming they’re straight.

Where the fuck is this coming from? When were we talking about sexuality?

Every time you walk down the street hand-in-hand with your sweetie, you’re advertising your sexuality. Many people do not have that privilege– being openly gay in this country is still dangerous.

Have you ever been ridiculed* for being straight? Have teh gheys heckled you or beat you up or driven someone you love to suicide? Have you lost a job because of your sexual orientation? Has your family shunned you because you are straight?

    *Note: Spelled correctly.

    Chill.

AH HA HA HA HAHAHAHAHA! Considering you just told me to “shut my pie hole”, I think maybe it’s time for a nice lie-down, Babs.

is it not possible for you to understand a space that isn’t specifically designated a “gay, lesbian” space, where LGBT people will still be treated like people, even by other straights (like me, for example)? how very limited of you.

Bit of advice no one really cares so why do you have to advertise it.

that’s a lie. it’s your movement that can’t stop talking about homosexuality, can’t stop sticking its nose into other peoples business, on the off chance they might be homosexual, etc. if no one actually cared, there would be gay marriage in all of the US states by now.

Do straights go around proclaiming they’re straight.

every time I say “my boyfriend”, or comment on a guy being cute, attractive, etc., I announce that I’m straight. Whenever I hold hands, or hug him in public, or kiss him in public, I announce that I’m straight. If I were married, in this state the simple act of wearing a wedding ring would announce that I’m straight. It’s just that no one gives a fuck when straights announce their straightness, while some people do very viscerally care when a non-straight person makes the same comments etc.

It’s the whinning that is a turn off.

*** I know this is TL, but R it anyways, Barbara ***

As for the haters of Beck, did you know he is having a “Stand with Israel” in Israel later this month? How is that so awful? Stand with courage? I have learned more about our founding fathers from listening to him that I never knew. I am reading about our history and how our constitution came about.[…] If not for Devine intervention our USA would might not exist.

    a) Isn’t it about time Israel stood on it’s own? Sorry, but they’d get a lot more sympathy from me if they quit murdering women and children (too). Oh, and stop using landmines. And cluster bombs. And white phosphorus.

I don’t care who did it first, or what their motives are, it’s inexcusable period. BOTH sides’ tactics are despicable and deserve equal condemnation.

Worst of all, the deed to the property that each side claims to have has been ripped from a several thousand year old book of fairy tales!

But, speaking of Beck and Israel, did you know that he believes that a lost tribe of Israel managed to make their way halfway around the world to the american west where Jesus came to visit them and teach them the TRUE™ word of… errr… him?

    b) Do you really think Beck’s rally is about anything other than himself? Exactly how is a loud-mouthed Mormon talk show host (that even Fox News is trying to distance itself from) going to help a sovereign nation that already gets oodles of money, weapons, and other aid from the U.S. and has one of the most elite militaries in the world?

What on Earth could he possibly say or do there to bring that region closer to peace? (Besides “I was wrong. I quit. Here, take all my money and buy medicine and toys for the kids.”)

c)You have learned more about the FF from Beck than they knew. In the slim chance that there actually is a place or state where consciousness persists after the body dies, I assure you that Jefferson, Franklin, Madison, Adams, Paine and co. would be looking at one another incredulously and shouting “I never fucking said that!”

Glenn Beck is a liar. David Barton is a liar. They will say everything and distort anything in order to make money and achieve their theocratic goals. There are reasons every legitimate historian on the planet either loathes them or pisses themselves laughing at what they say. They are the Ray Comfort and Ken Ham of History.

    d) Does Glenn know you just called the French divine? Or are you intimating that the Marquis de Lafayette was actually a heavyset time-traveling drag queen? (Which would actually be about as historically accurate as anything David Barton has said)

Seriously, Barbara, quit hiding in lies that you think your happiness depends on. Reality is fucking amazing, with nearly an infinity of true, real things to explore, learn about and see. To marvel at and revel in. Best of all, you’ll be able to say that you think or believe what you think or believe for a reason rather than just because you were told to.

Where was there any aggression? Where did anyone threaten you?

Oh Babs. It would be much easier to have a conversation with you if you stopped making shit up.

Have you figured out the nihilism versus atheism yet? (Do you even know why I’m asking you?)

It’s been a matter of amazement to me that people like Beck can convince middle and working class Americans to work against their own best interests.

The right wing media have also convinced people like my neighbor (tax partner, earns easily more than $250k per year) that he is “poor” and “working class”.

    Cry me a fucking river.

I earn a goodly chunk less than that and I *know* I am rich!

Sometimes I think this country is totally fucked up… If it wasn’t for sitescommunities like Pharyngula and its regulars, I would be packing our backs to go back to Europe…

Since you don’t have answers, you may as well scamper back to your teabagger comrades and tell them you’ve slain the big, evil, gay dragon. It makes no difference to us at all. Reality will continue to have a liberal bias, and you will continue to be an ignorant bigot. Isn’t that the way you want it to be?

I guess crossing bridges is not your thing.

Oh, it’s our thing, Cupcake. It’s not yours. I’m still waiting for a long, considered, thoughtful response, paragraph by paragraph of my post answering your questions at #550.

The fact that you are incapable of responding intelligently, your refusal to attempt to communicate well (spellcheck, idiot, spellcheck) and your continued lying about leaving says a fuckton about you. Not only that, but you have continually exposed your stupidity, bigotry and lack of empathy and compassion for others.

You, like all other Tone Trolls™ want to whinge about cuss words, but say the nastiest, poisonous things about others. It’s still nasty and ugly, Cupcake, when you don’t swear. Actually, you’re a thousand times nastier than any regular commenter here.

You’ve used up whatever goodwill people may have been willing to extend to you. You’ve shown what you are, you’ve paraded it, as if being a lying, hypocritical, under-educated bigot who doesn’t give a shit about anyone else is something to be proud of, and you’re too dense to figure out why no one here is impressed or willing to bother with you anymore.

You are a flaming, fetid, festering pimple on the ass of humanity, Barb.

Now, are you ever going to stick your flounce, liar? I know it’s hard (for you), but try to keep your word.

  175. says

My goodness, I have you all squabbling.

    WTF are you talking about.

    You all are so sanctimonious

    BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA
this, from the person who said the following things:

You all hate. You hate everything and pretend with each other that you support each other. No you have no idea what it is to have a real friend. You all have no values. You value nothing except each others badness.
You think that is living? I guess it’s the only way you know. Keep up the wall you surround your self with because no one wants to identify with your self proclaimed inner evilness. I know that makes you feel good. If I called you scum like you think of your self then I would be just like you. No thanks. I will be the scantimounious one that you call me because you reject anything that might be good about you or any one else. You have lost the ability to distinguish what is good in this world and you embrace what you feel is bad.
Thats your choice and thats why you all feel the need to destroy others.
Some of you may grow up and get some smarts who knows. But most of you will wallow in misery forever.
    I really feel for you.

Yes, you do hate. Why else would you even bother? You hate someone you say you don’t believe in and also the people who do believe. Why is that? Is it because believers have something you don’t?

Having a blog like this that is set up to destroy is disfunctional. I like that you take care of those of you in need, but I would bet that you would not extend your hand or anything else to someone you spend so much time rediculing.
That is what separates us and what you find so offensive. Caring about others no matter who they might be is what its all about.

nobody can match you in terms of sanctimoniousness and refusal to cross bridges, Barbara

I really do sympathize with what you are saying.

your comments upthread belie this. But you’re welcome to explain what you imagine it is that you “sympathize” with.

How in the world do you make it better when your comments are so filled with aggression.

by preventing people like you from making it worse, and by providing community and protection for those you and your movement seek to harm.

The crass comments are for what? Is it not possible to speak intelligently without the dirt.

Oh fuck you, Babs. Sometimes “the dirt” is the perfect way to express my feelings towards your dumbfuckery.

I’ve been speaking intelligently to you all night, but you refuse to engage me or address any of my points. That is not the mark of someone who is actually interested in intelligent discourse.

    Dumbass.

*You need a question mark (?) at the end of that sentence.

  177. says

The crass comments are for what?

don’t accuse us of being “crass” for merely using words you don’t approve of, when you’ve actually made comments that tried to dehumanize us (literally; you were making comments that tried to paint us as not human), and other comments where you lied and belittled the danger and the struggles of people here by calling their fight for civil rights and for not being harassed and risking murder for walking down the streets as “whining”. Nothing I or others here have said has been nearly as “crass” and “dirty” as your attempts at othering, dehumanization, and trivialization.

  178. Mr. Fire says

So……I am nieve, this is a gay, lesbian site?

    So very, very nieve indeed.

Okay, so I agree I’m a dummie and straight. So what, who cares?

No one gets beaten up for being straight. Of course you don’t need to care.

Obviously you all do as you wear it on your shoulders.

Yeah I agree with Audley that you really need to work on that metaphor thing.

Bit of advice no one really cares so why do you have to advertise it.

If no one really cares, why are you talking about it?

Do straights go around proclaiming they’re straight.

    Yep, as mentioned above.

Queer people don’t go around proclaiming they’re queer nearly as much as evangelicals go around proclaiming how Christian they are. By your rationale, why aren’t you trolling Christians?

    Just shut up about it.

This sums you up quite nicely.

    No one cares

“NO ONE CARES!!! CAN’T YOU SEE HOW LITTLE I CARE ABOUT HOW YOU GAY PEOPLE DO GAY STUFF? CAN’T YOU SEE HOW UNIMPORTANT AND INCONSEQUENTIAL IT IS TO ME? DON’T YOU GET THAT?? DON’T YOU??”

if you are or aren’t whatever it is that you think you are.

Ooh, nice. You actually can’t bring yourself to admit that some people are queer, can you? It would be too contaminating and distressing for your version of reality, huh?

That’s it in a nutshell. All of us have been trying to discuss things with Babs but she doesn’t want to discuss anything with us. She wants to parade her prejudices, first against atheists and then against anyone who’s non-straight (and even straights who don’t display the homophobic/cisgendered bigotry she thinks we should). She doesn’t respond to what people here say but rather to what the voices in her head say. Plus she can’t stick her flounce.

you say anything like “I think I’ve made my point, with a little help from y’all”.

you say “I just have a different opinion!”

    Thank you.

*This goes for the male side as well. No dicks, pricks, etc.

**Douche based insults are fine. Why? Douching was a terribly anti-woman practice designed to make women feel ashamed about their natural body odor. Repeated douching can wash away the lining of the uterus, making it not just pointless but dangerous. Douching can lead to infections and increases the risk of ectopic pregnancies and pelvic inflammatory disease.

Douche and douchebag make very fitting insults in certain situations.

You might consider 1) looking for a mentor or role model who has a better grasp of reality and a better education on historical and political matters or, 2) better yet, just thinking for yourself. Go to the public library and get some good, objective books on history. Read them. Think honestly about the truth.

I was just remembering one of my first forays into Pharyngula…I was trying, clumsily, to understand a certain feminist issue. I didn’t do well, and pretty much got taken apart bit by bit by the Horde. It hurt, and I lost some sleep over it, but I came back and ate a little crow and tried again, and learned some new ways of thinking. It was important to me.

Thinking back…It took me a while to understand that during that incident, you [the Horde} were not taking issue with me personally [you don’t really know me, after all), but with 1) my ideas and 2) my obtuseness in not getting a bigger picture beyond my own narrow thinking. Once I mastered that, I could let go of my feeling that I was being attacked personally, and that helped me to be able to examine my ideas separately from “me.” (Does that make sense? it’s 1:30 am in CT and I am fading fast.)

Barbara says she feels “hate” and she keeps pointing to what she calls “hate” – but she’s missing the point entirely. What was happening (at least at first) was our rejection of her irrational, hateful ideas. Of course, the longer she refused to engage, to respond to the honest, thoughtful queries posted by Caine and others, the more annoying and whiny she became, and eventually she got a whole wheelbarrow of corrupt porcupines to take home with her.

Barbara, if you are still around, or if you stop back in, take some time to go back and read this thread. Read carefully. Note the real willingness of people here to try to engage in rational conversation with you. Notice the real questions, the effort to understand what you mean, the effort to help you to understand some ideas other than what you have learned from religion and from people like Glen Beck, who really, really do not care about you. He wants your money, your adulation, your alignment with his fantastical thinking. He is an extreme narcissist, a deeply bigoted person, and is badly misinformed (or in denial about many of the truths of our world and our history.

More than a few posts left by a number of people here in just this one thread shine with examples of the inclusiveness and empathy common of humanists and atheists and still we only get condescension from you amongst your demands on our behavior and language. Some posters may be being a bit incivil or coarse, but you’re becoming downright malignant. Lemme guess, the Beatitudes aren’t your favorite part of the Babble, are they? Or is there like a secret ninth one? Blessed be the smug, they shall not hunger, being so goddamn full of themselves.

Regarding Bachman and Iowa, isn’t the Iowa Straw Poll basically the Black Spot of Republican politics? IIRC, the only times it’s picked the eventual Repub nominee were Reagan and Dubya, and they were unopposed. Didn’t Pat Fucking Robertson win it back when?

The right wing media have also convinced people like my neighbor (tax partner, earns easily more than $250k per year) that he is “poor” and “working class”.

It took my breath away when I went looking for how many USAians actually make the magic level of 200k or 250k, the numbers that are always bandied about in politics as “middle-class”. I make quite a bit less than half of that myself, but I thought that a lot of people *must* be in that category, given how often you see it used as a tag of middle class people. Know how many?

Less than 5% of the population.

Less than five fucking percent of Americans make $200k a year or over. (the numbers wavered a bit between studies, sometimes saying less than 5% at 250k, some less than 5% at 200k)

Five fucking percent. And yet those are the ones that politicians not only care about, but think are representative of all Americans. God, we are so screwed.

Oh yeah, nearly everyone in congress is a rich lawyer*.

  227. 'Tis Himself, OM says

Because those states with the highest median household income (ooo, 55k!) are also mostly the ones with the highest state and local taxes and highest prices.

That’s for a simple reason. The well-off* expect local and state governments to provide services which the poor would like but don’t expect. Well maintained roads cost money and the well-off realize this. It all boils down to how much disposable income** people have. If paying property tax on your car means you won’t eat well this month, then you want your property tax to be as low as possible.

Despite what Beck and the Koch Brothers would have us believe, most people with adequate disposable income don’t mind paying extra taxes for benefits like decent schools and good roads.

*By well-off I mean anyone making more than about $50K.

**Disposable income is total personal income minus personal current taxes. Some people confuse disposable income with discretionary income. Discretionary income is money you have after you’ve paid off all of your bills.

  228. Sheesh (as seen on Sadly, No!) says

    Carlie,

When you consider that household incomes are often counted with two and sometimes three earners you have to see in the grand scheme of things most of us don’t earn shit. Catering to anyone near $250K a year is an insult to most working people.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_income_in_the_United_States#Income_distribution

Fwiw, some of those high median household income states have less regressive tax structures than the lower ones. I can dig up that reference somewhere. I should check the two ‘winners’, Maryland and New Jersey, at least.

    All – re income, tax & shit…

the CBO is probably the best source of data.

While it feels nice personally to be in the top 10% for both income and IQ (whatever teh fuck that last actually measures!) I feel horribly privileged.

I grew up poor (widowed mom, on welfare, council house, and Roman Catholic in the west of Scotland). We didn’t even know there *were* tracks to be the other side of! The fact that my personal circumstances have changed – through hard work, education, and a fuckton of luck – has no bearing on my personal knowledge of, and awareness of real life.

My wife and I do our best to instill some real values into our kids (which is hard when you don’t need to count the pennies, when you are not juggling bills to decide which to pay and which to skip this week)

We’ve been there, but it was a long time ago.

This is why I want socialised, fully paid, healthcare. Rich fucks like me can and should pay higher taxes to help pay for this… I’d also be happy to pay, on top, for myself to get a nice room and so on… But everyone should have the same access to care.

This is why I want a better social safety net – I’ve been unemployed a number of times (layoffs and redundancy happens to everyone, these days). We’ve come close to bankruptcy a number of times. I pay for personal insurance for most things, so that (at least) my family are protected…. but I can afford that (see above, re “rich fuck”). We need a safety net for the people who CAN’T afford that.

I want every kid to have access to good, fact-based education – through college if possible. Regardless of where they live or how much or little money their parents have. (Selfishly – I got to college because it was free in the UK, and I even got a grant to pay for my living expenses -not much but I DIDN’T NEED MUCH – and it was more than enough to keep me fed, watered and under a roof while at college)

I want parents to have access to childcare, so that when both parents need to work, or have jobs that are not ‘schedule friendly’ there are affordable alternatives to support them (I was also the recipient of state-run ‘preschool’ care – which allowed my mom to work).

I want public transportation that is safe, affordable, and accessible (which would do a lot for disposable income — personal transportation costs a LOT in both money and environmental damage). Building the world around cars merely enforces the barriers of privilege.

I don’t really want much. Just a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment.

Just to clear some of you up on your Einstein “theory”. The last sentence is of particular interest. Einstein being a genius, was not about to reject something like this, Proof or no proof he recognized the amazing evidence of the universe. But of course the atheist knows for sure. Bunch of geniuses.

Einstein had previously explored this belief that man could not understand the nature of God in an interview published in 1930 in G. S. Viereck’s book Glimpses of the Great explaining:[11]
I’m absolutely not an atheist. I don’t think I can call myself a pantheist. The problem involved is too vast for our limited minds. We are in the position of a little child entering a huge library filled with books in many languages. The child knows someone must have written those books. It does not know how. It does not understand the languages in which they are written. The child dimly suspects a mysterious order in the arrangement of the books but doesn’t know what it is. That, it seems to me, is the attitude of even the most intelligent human being toward God. We see the universe marvelously arranged and obeying certain laws but only dimly understand these laws. Our limited minds grasp the mysterious force that moves the constellations. I am fascinated by Spinoza’s pantheism, but admire even more his contribution to modern thought because he is the first philosopher to deal with the soul and body as one, and not two separate things.
Nonetheless, Einstein was more inclined to denigrate disbelievers than the faithful.[12] “The fanatical atheists,” he said in correspondence, “are like slaves who are still feeling the weight of their chains which they have thrown off after hard struggle. They are creatures who–in their grudge against traditional religion as the ‘opium of the masses’– cannot hear the music of the spheres.”[12] Although he did not believe in a personal God, he indicated that he would never seek to combat such belief because “such a belief seems to me preferable to the lack of any transcendental outlook”

Use your own words please, and be clear, and try not to use “it” too often when you can use specific nouns instead. Thanks. :-)

Now, about a child encountering a library of books. You (I think it’s you! Is it you?) said this:

We are in the position of a little child entering a huge library filled with books in many languages. The child knows someone must have written those books. It does not know how. It does not understand the languages in which they are written. The child dimly suspects a mysterious order in the arrangement of the books but doesn’t know what it is. That, it seems to me, is the attitude of even the most intelligent human being toward God. We see the universe marvelously arranged and obeying certain laws but only dimly understand these laws. Our limited minds grasp the mysterious force that moves the constellations.

I think it’s a safe bet that many, many of the people who hang around here remember that feeling, as I do: being a little child and feeling absolutely awestruck at the vast reams and realms of information in the books at the school library, public library or, as in my own lucky case, at home. (Thanks, mom and dad.) But here’s where we probably differ. The child in your example stops there, at “awestruck” is told that that feeling is “god.” Those of us who choose a reality-based life interpret that feeling as “COOL! Wow, people are SO AMAZING to have figured out so much about our world! What else is out there? I need to learn, discover, explore, figure it out!”

It’s no less awesome, it’s just PEOPLE, not GOD.

    That’s life! Ain’t it grand?

  270. Janine, The Little Top Of Venom, OM says

    Barbara,

If you’re so interested in Einstein’s opinions, why don’t you take a look at his views on politics?

Look, Barb of little brain. It’s ok. We understand! Honestly, we do. When you don’t know much of anything, you think that genius comes in just one flavor.

    It doesn’t.

And, other than his views on Mathematical Physics, Einstein is no more an Authority than me.

  279. Nerd of Redhead says

Your second quotation is from Nerd…

For blockquotes, I use one of the text formatting addons from FireFox, or use <blockquote>text to be quoted</blockquote> Remarks in reply.

  280. Phalacrocorax, not a particularly smart avian says

    Barbara,

In case you wish to cite somebody else’s text in order to support your arguments, I suggest that you make clear distinction between what you wrote and what you’re quoting. It’s also important to mention the source.

    For example:

“The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honourable, but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish. No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this.”

Albert Einstein (genius), in letter to Eric Gutkind (1954)

  281. 'smee says

    ME@75

And, other than his views on Mathematical Physics, Einstein is no more an Authority than me.

Other than his legacy in GR & so on. Which other VERY SMART people continue to investigate and refine*. In other words, he is not treated as an authority in Physics (if he ever was!)… Just as the originator of GR & SR

    * Science! It works. And when it don’t seem to work, science is used to fix it!

  282. Quodlibet says

Nerd, my apologies. I know to use the blockquote, really I do…it was when I was pasting some text that I got it mixed up. Too many windows open, and I think the guacamole may have been a factor. Still, I take responsibility and offer my apology.

    —-

I’m still wondering if Barbara went to church this morning and if so, then if any of the conversation of yesterday and last night went through her head as she sat there, and if so, if she found any parts of the service to be distasteful or untruthful or manipulative or guilt-inducing…and if so, dis she experience any cognitive dissonance or headache or steam coming out her ears….Just wondering.

  283. Randide, ou l'Optimisme says

    Quodlibet,

As nice as that would be, I’m unfortunately way more willing to bet that Barbcake, convinced that she is winning the logic battle with a bunch of evul ahtiests, sat front and center, smug in the knowledge that she was far more righteous than the pastor/reverend/priest was this past week.

  284. 'Tis Himself, pour encourager les autres says

    I loves me some woodpeckers

We’ve got hummingbirds who hang around the honeysuckle and begonias.

  285. Makyui says

“The fanatical atheists,” he said in correspondence, “are like slaves who are still feeling the weight of their chains which they have thrown off after hard struggle. They are creatures who–in their grudge against traditional religion as the ‘opium of the masses’– cannot hear the music of the spheres.”

You know, looking at this again, it sounds an awful lot like Atheist-Pope Genius Einstein either didn’t know what an atheist was, or is using the word to mean something else. This smells a hell of a lot like the typical shit that self-professed “agnostics” like to say to feel all self-righteous and smug around open atheists.

Why, could it be that… Einstein is wrong about something?

OH NOES MY ABSOLUTIST BLIND FAITH IN AUTHORITY that doesn’t actually really exist oops nevermind.

  286. says

    Randide, love the new nym!

    Le Havre en Chêne:

I loves me some woodpeckers; we used to have 2 frequenting our garden before the cat got at them. Poor things.

Aaaw. I love woodpeckers too. We have two nested pairs of Downys, one nested pair of Hairys and one nested pair of Northern Flickers on the property. There’s a wonderfully diverse and large bird population here and I provide top quality food and lots of it, because these guys help me to make a living. :)

  287. Audley Z. Darkheart OM, purveyor of candy and lies says

Holy fucking shit, today I had to attend an unveiling ceremony and then I took a nap. Imagine my surprise when Barb shows up again for another smackdown!

Barb, honey, give me a minute. Gotta boot up the old shitbox.

  288. nemo the derv says

    Barbara,
Even if Einstein did believe in god he would not be a Christian.

It has something to do with the fact that he was born Jewish.

  289. Randide, ou l'Optimisme says

Thanks, Caine. We’ll see how it plays. Plus it forces me to re-read the book for a long-overdue fourth time. The Operatic score hasn’t ever been too far from me though.

  290. says

    ‘Tis:

We’ve got hummingbirds who hang around the honeysuckle and begonias.

Oooh, jealous. There isn’t a wide variety of hummingbirds here. I do have a feeder for them, one of these days, I’ll make some syrup and get it outside.

  291. Ragutis says

Barbara, libraries and books are not an analogy you should be using as only one book seems to be of any particular interest to you, and you haven’t even demonstrated much understanding of that one.

  292. Makyui says

Even if Einstein did believe in god he would not be a Christian.

It has something to do with the fact that he was born Jewish

Going by Barbara’s post alone, he sure as hell wouldn’t be religious. No personal god, no pantheism… He’d be a deist at worst. And you know what they say about deists.

  293. 'Tis Himself, pour encourager les autres says

    nemo the derv #90

Babs doesn’t care if Einstein was Jewish. Her hero The Beck™ loves him some Jews. Well, actually Israelis, but they’re basically the same thing. As long as they aren’t the ebil Muslins. Since Einstein wasn’t a Muslin, he’s good to go as far as Beck is concerned and what’s good enough for that fucktard Beck is good enough for fucktard Babs.

  294. Audley Z. Darkheart OM, purveyor of candy and lies says

Babs, about Einstein: his religious views (sorry, I didn’t read you copy-paste screed. I’m still groggy from my nap) have absolutely fuck all to do with mine. I don’t base that on what any sort of authority figure says.

I was an atheist long before I found Pharyngula. I didn’t need someone like PZ telling me that’s how I should be.

If we’re talking about scientists, though, what about Hawking? He has stated that there is no need for a creator– is he any less of an expert than Einstein?

  295. nemo the derv says

    ’tis@95

I just brought that up to point out that the chances of Eisntein agreeing with either Babs or Glenn Beck on pretty much anything are as about as close to zero as it gets.

Not that it matters. I think phalcrocorax’s well found link put an end to it nicely.

Today’s lesson boys and girls is:
One needs more than a Wikipedia article to know what they’re talking about.

  296. Tethys, calmar-garou says

    Dear Barbie,

Do forgive my decided apathy to engage with you today.
(You also bore me, so meh)

You see, being that I am an ebil atheist, and it IS the full moon, I was up all night performing blood sacrifices and participating in the annual Lammas orgy.

    I’m a bit tired.

    So sorry cupcake.

    @The pint
I had forgotten all about that scene. Thanks!

  297. says

But of course the atheist knows for sure.

why do you keep on lying? you don’t know anything about atheists, stop making yourself look like an idiot by making such inaccurate pronouncements. Also, Einstein’s “god”, if he at any time believed in one, doesn’t help your argument any, since it wasn’t the Christian god.

Also, the argument from authority is a logical fallacy, and won’t fly here. Who cares what Einstein personally believed? Einstein is not immune to being wrong about stuff, even in the stuff he was best at (look up the “Cosmological Constant” sometime), so why would we be swayed by his argument on things he wasn’t an expert on, especially when they’re just personal opinions?

Are you guys still hanging on to those “chips”.

what the fuck are you talking about. you’re the one walking in here, with one Jesus-shaped chip, and another Beck-shaped chip on your shoulder.

In other words grow up. Children grow out of that IF they mature.

this is an empirically false statement. There is no correlation between age, maturity, and the kind of language one uses. What it is is a false moralistic statement, and those carry no weight here.

Being bitter all the time is not healthy.

says the tea party member and beck follower. stop projecting your own bitterness on us.

How about you trade it in for inquisitiveness.

says the person who swallowed Beck’s propaganda whole. your projection is quite painful.

Get some originality in your speech.

what would you know about originality?

  298. Audley Z. Darkheart OM, purveyor of candy and lies says

    ‘smee:

buh buh but…. he’s English! And they are of the debil!

Crap, I didn’t think about it from that angle. :P

  299. says

Why, could it be that… Einstein is wrong about something?

    INCONCEIVABLE!

@Tethys – no problem. It’s a reliable standby when I need a laugh during one of these “Oh dear, they’re back?!?” threads. It was running through my head A LOT during Elevatorgate.

Now you may be tired from all your full moon ebil blood right shennanigans, but I still have mine yet to come tonight – it’s another hippie fire circle in a couple of hours, so hopefully I won’t miss TOO much while I’m out there cavorting with other heathens, bringing joy to the spectators with fire art, sharing in a supportive community, bringing people together and NOT charging anyone money for it, instead giving freely to anyone who is there to watch, you know – all those things that Babs seems convinced that atheists are incapable of doing.

  300. 'Tis Himself, pour encourager les autres says

Hey Babs, you know who else believed in god?

No, I can’t go down that road. I won’t godwin this thread.

  301. Phalacrocorax, not a particularly smart avian says

you know who else believed in god?

    Vlad the Impaler?

  302. says

Barbara, your use of the Einstein quote shows one of the big differences between religion-y people like yourself and science-y people like us.

Religion lives and dies on Authority.

Science couldn’t give a dingo’s kidney for Authority.

Einstein is considered a great figure in science history because his ideas allowed physics to make a great leap forward. But he’s not viewed as infallible, and his theories still get tested EVEN TODAY.

  303. says

    ‘Tis:

you know who else believed in god?

Indeed. If we’re gonna talk long dead peoples, though, most of them were religious, at least to a degree. Not being religious tended to result in a much shorter life.

People like Barbcake would just love to see that sort of thing re-instituted.

  304. Nerd of Redhead says

Still, I take responsibility and offer my apology.

*looks at past blockquote mistakes* Join the club.

  305. 'smee says

People like Barbcake would just love to see that sort of thing re-instituted.

Zombies are, of course, a critical part of the Christian Death Cult! I guess they find it unfortunate that (1) only Jeebus has that power, and that (2) they’ll need to wait ’til RAPCHUR to really join in…

So THAT’S why BECK is going to Israel! Of course!

  306. Audley Z. Darkheart OM, purveyor of candy and lies says

    Babs,

Are you guys still hanging on to those “chips”.

What “chips”? Are you talking about the Doritos that I had earlier? Or the pieces of shell that have peeled off my turtle (the poor thing has started molting)?

Specificity, dear Barbara, will help you communicate clearly.

*You need a question mark (?) at the end of your sentence.

    Don’t they get rather heavy.

What gets heavy? You need a more specific noun here.

*You need a question mark (?) at the end of your sentence.

Give it a break and see if you can have a conversation without the vitriol. In other words grow up. Children grow out of that IF they mature.

You know what else children learn as they grow up? Spelling, grammar, and effective communication techniques. Why haven’t you grown up, Babs?

I’m going to ask for specific examples of “vitriol”* again. Difficulty: Simply mocking your ideas or using naughty language don’t count.

*You’re proud of yourself for being to spell a word as difficult as “vitriol” correctly, huh? Now let’s try for some synonyms!

Being bitter all the time is not healthy.

Who says that I’m bitter? I’ve already told you that I’m in this for the lulz, hun. Do try to keep up.

I’ll take Strawmanning and Projection for a thousand, Alex.

How about you trade it in for inquisitiveness.

    Trade what in?

I am plenty inquisitive, Babs. As are most of us here. Why, just the other day I posted this link on my facebook feed. Scientists have discovered the darkest planet yet so far. The extra-solar planet TrES-2b is a Jupiter-like planet that absorbs nearly 100% of the light that reaches it.

    How cool is that?

Get some originality in your speech.

I’ve been plenty original, Babs. I haven’t copy-pasted anything without proper attribution, unlike some people here.

I don’t need to turn to an authority (Beck, the teabaggers, a church) to make a decision. I don’t parrot back other people’s opinions; I arrive at my own conclusions after reading up on a particular topic.

Why can’t you do this for yourself, Babs? Why are you scared of learning?

  307. Audley Z. Darkheart OM, purveyor of candy and lies says

    Phalacrocorax:

    Vlad the Impaler?

    I literally loled! XD

Mr Darkheart’s reaction was, “Well, yeah. Of course. He was killin’ those Turks for Jay-zuz!”

  308. 'smee says

vitriol*: Kinda like Freedom Oil, but after we win the war?

(said in a deep louisiana swamp-infested bayou accent for best effect)

(no actual bayousians were harmed in the making of this post)

  309. 'smee says

bitter all the time is not healthy.

    Barb is right!

Sometimes you need to switch it out for some lager, or hefeweisen, or porter, or stout, or even a lambic (yummmmm!)

Occasionally, especially when with one’s Significant Other* (actual or pending), one might even try, dare I say, a little sherry, vermouth, chianti, sangria, port, or wine.

*If you are with someone else’s significant other, then you need to listen to Country Songs for advice – you need some Hard Licker (that’s how it’s spelled, no?)

  310. opposablethumbs, que le pouce enragé mette les pouces says

Even Barbara’s hand-cherry-picked Einstein quotation (that she fondly imagines to carry the weight of Authoritah) doesn’t really do her the favours she thinks it does – when you consider that in it he likens religion to the chains of slavery …

Because you remind me that in spite of the plague of douchewasps and all their works there’s hope (and grog. and chocolate. and so much fun on this thread alone, and boats and bikes and knitting and cephalopoda and music and dancing and fabulousness and, of course, an inexhaustible supply of porcupines where appropriate))

  314. 'smee says

  315. Rey Fox says

Audley, yes, they do. And thank you. It’s not good.

  332. Audley Z. Darkheart OM, purveyor of candy and lies says

    Babs,
First, how the fuck did you manage to double post here? Truly, your stupidity knows no bounds.

Second, why would I waste my time watching anything you posted?

  333. 'Tis Himself, pour encourager les autres says

You only had to embed it once.

Incidentally, it’s preferred that people link to YouTube videos rather than embed them. As it grows larger, this thread takes longer to load, especially on phones and dialup connections, and embedded videos slow down loading dramatically.

  334. Audley Z. Darkheart OM, purveyor of candy and lies says

Is that video supposed to prove how independent and unique your arguments are, Babs? (I’m still not gonna watch it.)

Good job thinkin’ for yourself, bucko. *snerk!*

  335. Ragutis says

    *sigh*

Will I laugh, or will I hurl… stay tuned for the exciting conclusion in 4:20!

(Sadly, no, not that 4:20. Although I’m sure it would be a big help getting through this vid Barb posted.)

  336. says

Barb, you can’t directly post youtube links on wordpress, as it automatically embeds them. I immediately adblocked them.

You need to use link html. Such as this: Heaven is For Real ~ Colton Burpo’s “A Glimpse of Heaven”

That said, I’m not listening to any xian music. This would go under the heading of proselytizing, which, if you remember, is a bannable offense here.

So, thanks for trying to share and all, but you would please get it through your head that we are happy and not looking to be converted? Ta.

  337. 'Tis Himself, pour encourager les autres says

Okay, Teabagger Barbie, I watched the video. Akiane’s art can be described as competent but uninspired. He’s a skilled draftsman but he’s not saying anything with those paintings. The music is basic elevator music, background noise to be ignored.

Here’s something you might like. It’s the opening music to the computer game Civilization 4*. The song is “Baba Yetu” and it’s the Lord’s Prayer in Swahili.

Civilization 4 is an interesting game. The player starts at 4000 BC with a settler and builds a civilization by learning technologies (including religions), building cities, and interacting with the neighbors. It’s one of the few computer games I like.

  338. Barbara says

As this debate continues, some so called experts have implied or concluded that our Founding Fathers and Patriots were not religious. These secular champions, in an effort to further their own causes, have even painted these great men and women from our history as being devoid of religious passions or even a belief in God. This is a part of their strategy to remove any discussion of God from the public forum.

  339. Tethys, calmar-garou says

    Barb

I realize you’re all pissy about that whole you being laughably wrong about the details of the American Revolution.

But what exactly is it that you are trying to prove or say with that video?

  340. says

I suppose this could come off as a snark, but Arkiane’s art demonstrates how readily interchangeable fantasy and religion at least can be.

Honestly, though, I don’t want to put the girl down. She was obviously very talented for one who was so young. Still, it’s not great art. I’d guess that she saw enough Kinkade art, and had too little influence from more talented artists.

The religious undercurrent to the posting is obvious, but won’t affect people here much. Yes, heavenly pictures are nice, but no argument (apparently a fact lost on her parents). We are an empirically-oriented bunch, at least with respect to science, and whatever inspires Arkiane is well and good for artistic purposes, not meaningful to us.

Nice to see a child prodigy’s work, even so. Cute kid, too.

You: gets all her knowledge from wingnuts like Beck and whatever the preacher man says.

    You: wrong about everything.

    Us: Okay, read this.

Us: No, it’s like this, read this.

Us: Please, educate yourself! Learn to write! Please!

Oy. Have fun with Barbie Teacake, everyone. I must have stressed the hell out of something, I am not feeling well tonight, so I’m out. I don’t need to break the ol’ pancreas again.

  344. says

So, Barb is going to be completely ignorant of history? Typical Tea-bagger. Jefferson and Franklin were pretty strong secularist. If there is any defining characteristic of American History, it was most certianly not religion (unless you count religously aided racism).

(and would you stop embedding videos already?)

  345. Barbara says

Katherine, the point was to share which I posted. Very heartwarming. The girls art is amazing.

These secular champions, in an effort to further their own causes, have even painted these great men and women from our history as being devoid of religious passions or even a belief in God. This is a part of their strategy to remove any discussion of God from the public forum.

Oh come on, Barb, that’s a strawman made for Beck and the like to attack. They can then say, well, they did too believe in God, as if we ever said that they didn’t. Even Paine believed in God, and he was the most radically opposed to religion, judging from his writings.

Indeed, that’s part of the point of the separation of church and state. Believing founders were in favor of it (often on the state level, although the Bill of Rights didn’t extend there itself until later). It doesn’t take atheism to oppose things like teaching creationism as science, just a healthy regard for liberty, such as religious liberty.

    Glen Davidson

  348. says

It’s okay, Barbara – just make sure you make a link. That first HTML code above the comment. Use that one, and make a link to the video, then close the tag. Like this, but with angle brackets:

    [a href=”video link”]Look at this[/a]

And the art was…okay. I’ve seen better, but it was pretty at least.

  349. Audley Z. Darkheart OM, purveyor of candy and lies says

That’s gotta be another copy-paste. Good job, Babs, you are certainly proving that you can think for yourself!

If you would like to know, I was a history major in college. I also read histories (mostly biographies) for pleasure in my spare time (and when I’m not reading spy novels). So you can go ahead and keep presenting other people’s arguments as your own. I’m going to know when you’re wrong and I am going to correct you.

Tell me, have you looked at the Jefferson Bible yet? (I’ve already linked to it before, but I’m not confident that you know why some words are blue. You can click your mouse when you hover the cursor over the blue words to open a link, Babs). Read about it, then tell me whether you think Jefferson was a fundamentalist.

Has it occurred to you that we are discussing god in a public forum? Right now! As I type this! I haven’t been trying to shut you up– I’ve been trying to engage you, for shit’s sake– but apparently you are so shaky in your faith, your intelligence, and your political inclinations that you don’t even attempt to defend yourself against our arguments.

    Seriously, are you drunk?

    I’m not very computer savy.

No, you aren’t very savy period. No conclusive physical evidence for any of your inane claims. Videos of people spouting opinions don’t count. Citations to the academic literature would help. You know, what is found inside of libraries of institutions of higher learning world wide. Like found here. (And that is how you do a proper link.)

Caine, are you getting senile. Repeating your self so much.

Well, Barbie, if you ever managed to comprehend anything, none of us would have to repeat ourselves. You are weapon-grade stupid, Barb.

  355. says

Caine, are you getting senile. Repeating your self so much.

Bwahahahaha. That was a poor attempting at deriding Caine by someone ostensibly repeating right wing sound bites.

  357. Quodlibet says

Yes, that text that Babble-ra quoted in #160 is, I believe, attributed to McNaughton. I’ve wasted five minutes trying to track it down by date – sometime in 2007. It was too well-written to be her own stuff.

  358. Ragutis says

Err… what’s so great about some dude’s portfolio set to weak New Age keyboard music? I mean, I’m not gonna knock the artist’s talent, much better than I could do and I bet he cleans up at Arts Fairs and local festivals, but nothing amazing there, IMHO.

If you were aiming to inspire awe with an apropos of nothing we’ve been talking about youtube vid, try something like this:

    or hell, this:

I re-posted, because I fucked up and left half of it off. It’s here: Jesus Who? Menu with these two additions:

Silly Audley, she can’t be drunk. True Christian women don’t drink. One of the seven deadlies and all. Bet she doesn’t eat shrimp, or wear polyester magical underpants either.

  361. Nerd of Redhead says

Come on Barbie Teacake. Cite the literature that you are right. Not videos. Go a library at a true university/college and read the history books therein. Then come back with citations to show us who of the founding fathers was a professed xian, and who was a professed deist, and who was quiet, as freethinkers had to be in those days.

Are you “savy” at anything at all? Is there anything that you’re good at? Besides being an obnoxious idiot, obviously.

  366. Quodlibet says

Barbara, it would be very courteous of you to answer the serious questions that have been posed to you in this thread. You will find that people here are genuinely interested in engaging in thoughtful discussion. I’m serious and not being the least bit snide. If you engage in a mature, honest, rational, and thoughtful manner, we can have some good discussion. You’ve rejected numerous opportunities for discussion, instead offering vague statements that don’t really say anything, plagiarized text from other sources, and some videos. Why should we pay any further attention to you?

You came in ranting about hate, accusing people of all sorts of unfriendly, selfish behaviors, speculated about their sexuality, etc. You know, there’s an old saying about getting along with others…how does it go? “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Is that the rule you follow?

    meta

You know, one of the most interesting things about people like Barbara is that they haven’t got the courage to give honest answers to direct questions.

    /meta

C’mon, Barbara, you can do better than this. Think for yourself! Speak for yourself! Dig deep and prod your brain back to what it was when you were a child, when you could think and ask and strive to learn for learning’s sake. Don’t waste yourself, don’t sell youself short. You are a human with a brain. Don’t waste the only life you’re ever going to have. This is it, right here, right now!

I’ve been thinking poor babs isn’t who she claims to be. The smell of an old troll is there, but I can’t identify the souse, er source.

  368. Patricia, OM says

WHAT!!!!? Audley, you sinner, are you saying a True Christian can lie?

    I’m shocked to learn that.

  369. Barbara says

Katherine, Thank you, for the help. Now I will have to find another to try it out.
I read your personal blog. I have a neice who is going through the same as you but he was born a girl and thinks like a guy. He told every one at an early age 12, I think, that he changed his name and he was now a boy.
I wish you contentment and happiness and just be who you are. Do it for you. If your family sees you are happy and secure in your self they will come around. Give them time.
Best of luck to you and Katherine I mean that sincerely.

    Patricia,

    Audley, you sinner…

Wait, are we moving toward perversion and debauchery again? ;)

… are you saying a True Christian can lie?

Oh! Uh… no? I must have Teh True Christians™ confused with us angry, sinful atheists.

Plus, we eat babies and kick puppies. Or eat puppies and kick babies. I get those confused.

Even while protected by magical underpants?

You know, I have actually been wondering if our friend Babs is a Mormon.

Babs! Are you a Mormon? Are you mad ‘cos your magic undies are riding up uncomfortably?

  372. Patricia, OM says

I don’t think it’s Pilty, it isn’t smart enough. Old trolls know just how far they can go before they cue PZ. This one’s doing pretty well in that category. One more video might get it a warning. The bingo cards must all be blacked out by now.
