Am I the only one who takes comfort from the fact that Obama’s supposed faith is a veneer he was forced to wear in order to get elected? If you haven’t seen Obama’s “Sermon from the Mount”, you can get it by searching Barack Obama Mocks And Makes Fun Of The Bible on Youtube. Although the title to the video is overblown, the fact remains that the leader of the most powerful nation in world understands that the Bible is a collection of nasty, sadistic and irrational myths. As a result, I am sleeping just a bit more comfortably these days.

Don’t forget Mr. Freeze at the EPA. He has the solution to global warming (provided he doesn’t get carried away).

Hey, folks, party at my place. Today Halfway There goes over 250,000 hits. (In three and a half years I’m approaching PZ’s one-day total.) One of my fellow pharynguloid sycophants (we’re snarky atheists!) may as well be the person who rings the bell. I, for one, welcome PZ’s minions!

    Come say hello.

That just PROVES that HE is a MUSLIM SOCIALIST who wants to SURRENDER us to the TERRORISTS and CONQUER the WORLD establishing a NEW communist ATHEIST world ORDER!!! My doG tole me this while I was a prayin and I’s a good CHRISTIAN™ so I KNOW. WE NEED TO STAND UP AGAINST OBAMA AND FORCE THE SUPREME COURT TO OVERTURN HIS ELECTION BECAUSE IT DEFIES THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE AND HE ISN’T A CITIZEN OR A CHRISTIAN ANYWAY SO HE CAN’T BE PRESIDENT, CAUSE HE HAS TO BE A CHRISTIAN TO BE PRESIDENT AND HE WAS BORN IN ZIMBABE OR EGYPT OR IRAQ OR SOME OTHER ASIAN COUNTRY. HE WANTS TO TEACH ALL OF OUR KIDS ATHEISM AND EVIL-UTION AND THE CONSTITUTION SAYS WE MUST TEACH CREATIONISM!!! SO CALL YOUR GOVERNOR AND TELL THEM TO MAKE THE SUPREME COURT RULE THE RIGHT WAY AND MAKE SARAH PALIN OUR PRESIDENT!!!

/end typical uber right wing Christian psychotic rant

Over the top, or does that sound about right?

Awww man, I had it in comic sans, but the format fudged up when I posted it… *sigh*

President Obama didn’t really say “Creationism is for jerks and turds” at in his inaugural address, but that’s probably what he meant when he said he would restore science to its rightful place.

Off topic, but if any of you read bad Science, Ben Goldacre is having a little trouble with some lawyers after criticising an anti-vaccination loony.

A timely post. I just got this via ScienceDebate 2008:

I am writing to alert you to efforts underway this morning to zero out a large portion of the science funding from the Senate American Reinvestment and Recovery Act as a part of a $77.9B reduction effort led by Senators Ben Nelson (D-NE) and Susan Collins (R-ME).

As you know better than most, science and technology are responsible for half of the economic development of the United States since WWII and yet, if current trends hold, some, such as the Business Roundtable, have predicted that 90% of all scientists and engineers will live in Asia within 5 years.

The United States simply MUST renew our investment in the single greatest economic engine this country has ever known. Small federal investments in scientific research have helped produce things like the internet and the transistor that have consistently delivered multi-trillion dollar economies.

The United States is at a critical juncture, and if this concerns you we suggest now would be a time to contact your Senators and urge them to support science funding. Here is what is being proposed to be cut from the bill, according to TPM:

    NASA exploration $750,000,000 = 50%
    NSF $1,402,000,000 = 100%
    NOAA $427,000,000 = 34.94%
    NIST $218,000,000 = 37.91%
    DOE energy efficiency & renewable energy $1,000,000,000 = 38%
    DOE office of science $100,000,000 = 100%

Damn, you beat me to it. I saw that at Sciencedebates this morning, and it upset me so much that I made at OT post in PZ’s post on Zeno’s blog!!
Am I being paranoid, or is it a situation that is getting bad to worse?

Here is what is being proposed to be cut from the bill, according to TalkingPointsMemo:

    NSF $1,402,000,000 = 100%
    DOE office of science $100,000,000 = 100%

  9. T_U_T says

    “from bad to worse”

do you mean “worst”, or do you think that budget cuts larger than 100% are possible ?

  10. Mosasaurus rex says

the artist should sell t-shirts featuring the second panel- or the cartoon as a whole for that matter.

  11. Jello says

“Creationism is for jerks and turds”.

I only wish Obama had said that in his address but I’m glad someone did.

  12. SteveM says

do you mean “worst”, or do you think that budget cuts larger than 100% are possible ?

grammatically “worse” is correct as only two things are being compared.

  13. Ouchimoo says

    @dogmeat (fallout reference?)
No, I actually wouldn’t say that’s over the top. It’s about perfect except that no one would ever spell “doG”.

BTW what’s most scary about that is this is the crap I’ve been reading under the Minnesota STAR newspaper comments.

BTW you left out ACORN (It’s the only way Obama got elected you know, and Franken too. It’s a good thing Normy is going back on his word so that he can try and get more ballots for himself.)

Actually, if I understand correctly, these are not cuts to their normal budgets, but just reductions in the extra that would be given to them through the stimulus bill. Even if all of them were cut 100% in the stimulus bill (not just NSF and DOE Office of Science), they would still have their normal budgets. If that is the case, I’m cool with it. The stimulus bill is supposed to be one-time expenditures, and dumping a one-time slug of cash into scientific research will just start up a lot of research projects that will then promptly run out of money and get closed down again once the stimulus funds run out.

I think research money should be provided at a steady, predictable level over a long term. Short bursts of funding at irregular intervals just make life difficult for people who are only trying to do useful research, not spend their lives schmoozing congressmen for pork.

  15. Kausik Datta says

Tim @25 tells me that it is not that NSF’s and DOEOoS’s normal budget is being cut, just the extra addition through the stimulus bill. My question is: after the last 8 years’ travesty, aren’t scientific research, science education and teaching, and science curricula in schools in dire need of a positive stimulus as well?

  16. CaptainKendrick says

You know, I just learned more about the hardcore evangelist Obama supporterss just now, and I’m really concerned about them.

I voted for Obama, and I saw this cartoon on PZ’s blog, and thought it was just funny. period. Just funny. (Although, like someone else here mentioned, it would have been cool if he really did say “Creationism is for jerks and turds”).

So, I forwarded this comic to some friends of mine who I thought would appreciate the pop-culture humor references from our generation.

And one reply from an Obama True-Believer:

    “leave Barack alone you bully!”

I don’t get it. I used to think that the right-wing criticism of Barack supporters who think he is the Messiah might be over the top, but now I’m starting to wonder….

And I like the guy! It was just a funny comic!!!!!

Cripes, and we’re surprised when Islamic lunatics call for a jihad over a cartoon and Catholics go ape-shit over a cracker desecration!!!!!

Sometimes I feel like checking out of this species….

    the “conservatives” (reactionaries & neo-cons)
still only believe in spending on military and police power and tax cuts, nothing that would change the status quo. After all it is going great, conservative economic policies and deregulation are working?
Besides it would be cheaper to import technologies from foreign countries then pay to develop them here.
and like a dope addict they can only care about short term solutions, the next rush, the next bubble, the next quarter.
progress is not going to be easy but the if we can focus on what is good to do in the long run and not on immediate results and profits but on positive results over all the profits will be there as a side effect.
Isn’t it like doing basic research the side effects are product developments that come as a result of greater understanding not on focusing on a “product” from the start.

I would like to be optimistic but my memory keeps getting in my way. Tell me it is going to be OK, Please!

Emmett Brown for Energy? No way. As inventor of a time machine he should be in charge of NIST or the Naval Observatory. He’d also be a shoe-in for Department of Transportation. And, hello? Egon is a natural for Department of Homeland Security.

And what happend to the two most famous mad doctors in fiction, Frankenstein and Jekyll? Hmmm, maybe you could put Frankenstein in charge of NIH and Jekyll as head of OSTP or NSF.

Countess, I about peed my pants at Dr. Strangelove for DoD. Absolutely perfect. :)

  21. says

Hmm. I don’t know if Dr. Demento should be insulted or pleased. The man’s a genius, and the rest of them are all fictional. But then, as they say, there is no such thing as bad ink.

Did you know that “jiggawatts” is, or was, a perfectly acceptable pronunciation of “gigawatts” among engineers? Back in the day, anyhow.

That’s an engineer for you; pronounce two “g”s differently in the same word …

    (j/k of course … )

It remains pretty sweet that, while he’s still a Politician and still feels he has to go and suck up at the National Prayer Breakfast, Obama made it a point to say nice things about atheists in his address there yesterday.

I doubt the cartoonist was really referencing H.P. Lovecraft. It’s a reference to the movie The Re-Animator which is a modern adaptation of the Lovecraft story. Most people who know the movie have never heard of H.P. Lovecraft before.

I know I’m a nerd for having to point that out.

Otherwise, love the cartoon and love people’s other suggestions. (Dr. Strangelove for the Win)
