Why cephalopod hats will never be popular

This is a photo of a Mr Potatohead stuffed with fish, and an octopus gnawing the tasty treat out of its head.

I just want to know who has been leaking our training and conditioning procedures from the submarine labs. Do we have a mole in the organization?

I watched the feeding of the Giant Pacific at the DC zoo the other day and it was great fun. The keepers put some fish in a ball with some holes in it and the octopus has to figure out how to get the fish out. And she was changing colors and being all smart and beautiful. I’ll take a picture next time.

It always amazes me how smart these creatures are. They just aren’t dumb enough for me to feel comfortable eating them. I wonder at times about the people who find the octopus both smart AND delicious.

Pictures like this maybe be cute and funny now, but you won’t be laughing when it is a human child trapped in those deadly arms.

Dorid, if these horrible monsters were not so smart, they would not be nearly as delicious. Each succulent bite is a small victory against a deadly foe. Unless it’s overcooked, then it’s just a chewy mess.

Our undersea mammalian brethren, the noble sperm whales, have been at the foe for generations. We should be grateful!

Of course not. We all know that moles live underground, not in the water. (Now, as soon as I’ve perfected my new aquatic mole…)

I don’t remember getting an octopus with my Mr Potatohead. Must’ve been an American issue only.

Mind you, I did get a potato with my Mr Squidhead.

Ah, childhood memories of Mr. Squidhead… good times, good times… well, at least up until the hotter days of summer, when Mom said my favourite toy was attracting flies and stinking up the whole house.

And now I read in the newspapers that Mr. Squidhead is no longer available for sale! Bah! One or two little sucker accidents, and they ban a wonderful toy!

Does your wonder extend to the humble pig? Because pigs are very smart as well — and their deliciousness is legendary.

So, Drew — are you saying that cephalopods find us both smart and delicious?

I saw that octopus at the National Aquarium in DC last year. The way she walked around her tiny little tank made me so sad.

You’d think the octopus would just pry open that little hatch on the back of the thing and get at the fish that way…
