Harriet Hall and Amy Roth have reconciled. I’m pleased to hear it; I wasn’t worried about Amy, but Hall was going to hit mantle at the rate she was digging. It is a great relief that she stopped, looked around, and considered her situation thoughtfully, and then responded well.

Too bad the pitter’s are already shitting all over the comments there. It looked like Steve was growing a spine for a minute, defending Rebecca, taking a few of them to task, but the diplomat in him just can’t resist accommodating them.
I understand his motives and I think he’s a good guy generally, but comon, this is RW, a close personal friend of his, that’s been shit on for 2 years plus running now. You’d think he would have spoken up sooner and more forcefully on her behalf.

I’m glad about this, too. I had suspected Hall of becoming another Paula Kirby, and I’m not entirely convinced she understands the goals and means for moving past the “exceptional women allowed” stage of working towards inequality; but at least she stopped digging in about that t-shirt.
Now if she could talk reasonably with Will, and see that he had a point for calling out her trans-erasure in her sex/gender post, that would be ideal.
But one step at a time, I guess.

A good sign that the Slymepits attempts to fan the flames of these kind of situations aren’t having the desired effects. And hopefully it’ll serve as an illustration to those who still haven’t woken up to their scumbaggery of just how much their little clique is dependent on not rocking the boat, i.e. that their response to dissent is to go on a bullying rampage against the dissenter.

I’m so very glad Amy and Harriet have reconciled. I’m tempted to say that it was bound to happen since the original problem had a lot to do with misunderstanding and miscommunication — and both Amy and Harriet are such reasonable and likeable people — but there’s been so much animosity and tribal divisiveness surrounding the feminism/skepticism issue that I wasn’t very hopeful. This is good news indeed.

Dear PZ,
Both Harriet and Amy deserve credit for this reconcilation and their graceful conduct in their exchange of emails. They both admitted some degree of fault and accepted each other’s apologies. Kudos to them both.
You recently said about this: “It’s simple: [Harriet] wore [the t-shirt] to spite some people she clearly doesn’t like, and to get praise from other people who don’t like Rebecca Watson and the Skepchicks. It’s really that easy. Just admit it and move on. I know it’s hard to admit that you’re that petty, but it would end all this nonsense, and it would be honest.”
Amy has graciously accepted Harriet’s explanation that this was not her intention, saying “I realize now, that was not your intention”. (While Harriet has apologised for her lack of forethought and realisation that it would be taken that way.)
In the spirit of this reconciliation, might you wish to amend your above statement and join Amy in accepting Harriet’s explanation of her intent?

This really is a feeling of relief, like things aren’t quite so hopeless as I’d thought.
I really did have a hard time believing that anyone could be so socially inept as to not realize that “I am not a skepchick” would be taken by many as a dig against Skepchick. But, I guess some people really are that clueless.

At a certain point, someone is going to have to accept someone else’s face-saving excuses.
I’m not a fan of all these reconciliation and “There will be peace in our time” efforts, largely because they imply that there isn’t a real reason for the tension (please, just listen while I explain my pure motives for calling you a slutwhorebitchcunt…). If individuals manage to overcome their specific issues, though, I think that’s only good.

I can see where Hall could have been so socially inept. It mostly takes totally ignoring the Deep Rifts to get on with her own medicine & anti-quackery thing. Many women of our generation who went into heavily male-dominated fields are a bit socially inept. It helps you to ignore all the bullshit.
I used to lurk a bit at JREF, and I really didn’t like it when the “skepchick” label was coined – it seemed somewhat derogatory, a cutesy ladies’ auxiliary style of thing. With a nerdy-cheesecakey calendar – very “chill girl”. Neither Rebecca nor Amy used to identify as feminists back then and possibly they might have thought differently if they had been more aware. I’m not going to complain now, though, they’ve taken it as their own and run with it.
