Berkeley meetup et cetera

Having reviewed my schedule for my Bay Area visit, including the fact that Tuesday evening will likely be mainly consumed with helping my Dear Old Mom celebrate her 40th birthday,* I have concluded that I will be having a beer at the Jupiter in Berkeley starting at approximately 5:30 on Wednesday the 27th. The Jupiter is close to the Downtown Berkeley BART station. As the bearded hippie, I will be easy to spot. Hope to see you there.

In other news, I gave my old growth desert lecture a couple weeks back here in town, and a report on that lecture has just shown up in the local press. The reporter, a lovely person, got a couple minor details wrong but I’m always glad for a sympathetic story on desert plants showing up in desert newspapers.

* for approximately the 30th time

Duly noted on my calendar, Chris, and I hope to make it. By the way, I’m sure you know you won’t be the only bearded hippie in Berkeley that evening, so perhaps you should wear a big red A around your neck. We won’t call you Hester.

As the bearded hippie, I will be easy to spot.

If that’s true, then Berkeley has changed even more than I thought since I last lived in the Bay Area

I lived in and around Berkeley from 1982 to 2008, and mainly what changed in that period is the beards got more ironic.

  4. 4

    that’s ironic, and not iconic.

I remember visiting UCSC when I was a grad student at Berkeley, and everyone was sporting pony tails.

so, a few years later, when I moved to SC, I let my hair grow out beforehand so I too would have a pony tail…

…only to find that buzzcuts were now the fashion.

say, if you heading northwards, I do believe my uncle the lion king still lives in Fresno.

did you guys ever manage to hook up via email?

The article mentions Cima Dome – also one of my favorite places in Mojave. I try to get out there twice a year to explore and take terrible amateur photos. Watching the stars come out up there is on my top ten list of favorite things to do ever.

    yay! it’s gone. sorry.

Wish I could be there, srsly.
(my 16-yo daughter has her heart set on teh UC at the moment so…maybe…soon….the financial-aid goddesses willing.)

Wow. That’s actually do-able for me. I may have to leave early as I get up obscenely early to go to work.

I dunno… from what I remember, Jupiter seemed to have it’s share of bearded profs and bearded grad students…

I can probably make it, but probably not till a bit later. If you see a short white confused bald guy wandering around, that’s likely me. :/

oh, btw, happy bday to momz.

  15. 15

    I’ll try to make it!

    Hi Chris,
Had a lovely time at the meetup. It was fun meeting you and the others. Next time you’re back in the Bay Area, let’s do it again!
