Friday Cephalopod: It’s giant squid weekend

I expect you all to remember that the Discovery Channel will be airing their new episode with footage of the giant squid this Sunday evening. I know what I’ll be watching.

    But PZ, that’s when EWTN (the Catholic network) is airing their “EWTN Bookmarks” show on the new atheism–an interview with Archbishop Rino Fisichella! After all, who knows more about atheists than a Roman Archbishop!

    We’ve just started a project for the Giant Squid full-genome de-novo sequencing. Somebody in the team remarked that “it’s good we didn’t have to go and get the DNA sample personally”.

    You just know it will be fifty eight minutes of ads, breathless fun squid facts and warnings of the danger of squid attack interspersed with thirty seconds of shaky camera footage of what could be tentacles. That’s what the last “giant squid” show I saw was like.

    I can’t help remembering this is the same company (Discovery Communications) that gave us that wonderful mermaid show last year. I predict about 30 seconds of shaky video shown over and over in the last five minutes of the show.

    good question. There ought to be at least a few lophotrochozoans with higher priority. It’s not even a candidate for Model Cephalopod.

    Even their promo had more than just a flash of tentacles. The whole thing was visible for at least a moment and they promise more.

    Thanks for the reminder! I knew something was coming up on TV on the 27th but couldn’t remember what.
