I noticed yesterday a sharp spike in the statistics of those who came to this blog, about ten times the normal daily traffic. I initially idly wondered if the counter had developed a glitch but I then received a Facebook posting from a former student that said that one of my posts had made the front page of Reddit, which explained it. The post in question was this one. [Read more…]

On my way home from work, there is a stretch of road that has two closely spaced intersections with traffic lights that have large amounts of cross traffic. So naturally when I approach the first intersection, I stop at the lights even when they are green if I see that the traffic is backed up ahead so that I cannot clear the intersection. This is for the obvious reason that if I have to stop in the middle of the intersection and the lights change, then I would be blocking the cross traffic which has green lights. [Read more…]

Celebrity chef Paula Deen is being sued by a former employee for sexual harassment and the use of the N-word. I totally agree with P. Z. Myers, that this business of making fun of the answers given by women who take part in beauty pageants has to stop. I had do so myself before I realized how unfair it is. The latest victim of this is Marissa Powell, the Miss Utah contestant for Miss USA. [Read more…]
Some time yesterday, this blog passed the two million pageviews mark since I started blogging at FtB on January 10, 2012. Before that I was blogging at my previous home since January 2005, so a lot of words (I estimate about 3,000,000) have emerged from my keyboard since the very beginning.
Thanks to all who read and those who comment. My goal has been to create a community of people who are interested and want to engage in important issues thoughtfully and respectfully, and I think that has been largely achieved.
In the process I feel like I have got to know many of you quite well, even though the interactions haste been entirely online.
