Does shark dentistry pay well?

You wouldn’t think so, and it would be really tough to recruit people into the profession, but this game looks like my cup of tea.

(Warning: the trailer is a bit grisly.)

Except…it’s not out yet, and it’s Windows only. Why do people do that when there are perfectly good Linux/Unix operating systems out there?

    Re: Linux

Using Steam’s Proton compatibility layer means that many games run acceptably under Linux without modification. Can’t guarantee it for any individual game, but the ProtonDB tracker is a good resource for seeing what does (and doesn’t) work.

As for why developers don’t target non-Windows OSes, it boils down to market share and QA costs. Each new major configuration you support basically means you need to redo all of your QA. And stuff will surprise you. I’ve done some work in Unity, which promises to be cross-platform, but boy howdy are there important differences across OSes that will bite you (like a shark) if you’re not careful.

While I have a lot of issues around Steam as the defacto monopolistic marketplace for games, I do have to say they’ve done a good job getting Linux support working for a lot of games. Sure, it’s to support their own monopolistic gaming device (the Steam Deck), but important parts of Proton are open source and we all benefit. (Notably, the Steam API portions of Proton are not open source).

I haven’t tried this particular game yet, but I have no reason to believe it wouldn’t run on Linux. Fallout does, RDR2 does, The Last Of Us does, so why not this one.
As Win10 fades out shortly, there seems to be a bit of a move to migrate to Linux rather than use the odious terrible horrible Windows11. I have been running Linux since 1998 or so, on Desktop and Laptop, there is in 2025 exactly one (trading) application I need Windows for, some NET framework bullshit, but I can live with that. And since we have the fash these days, maybe more people should switch to Linux.

Lunge at the end was silly. Could’ve had a goblin shark launch its jaw out of its mouth.

I’ve been using Lutris to install games from GoG recently, and for some of them, the windows version works better through Lutris than the Linux version.
