Manhunt!

The pursuit of Vance Boelter, the assassin of Melissa Hortman, continues. The rats are scattering.

  • His wife, Jenny Lynn Boelter, was stopped in Onamia, a town well north of Minneapolis. She was not held as a criminal, although she was traveling with passports and weapons.
  • His wife was the president and CEO of Pretorian Guard, the security company Boelter worked at.
  • I have no idea what his personal situation was like, but Boelter lived with two men as roommates, which may mean his wife is off the hook in any conspiracy theory.
  • Before fleeing, Boelter left a message for his roommates.

David and Ron, I love you guys. I’ve made some choices and you guys don’t know anything about this, but I’m going to be gone for a while. I may be dead shortly. So I just want to let you know that I love you guys both. And wish it hand’s gone this way. I don’t want to say anything more, and implicate you in any way because you guys don’t know anything about this, but I love you guys and I’m sorry for all the trouble this has caused.

I suspect he’s not going to be caught alive.

  • Some people are claiming that Boelter was a “registered Democrat”. We don’t have party registration in Minnesota!
  • His friends have said he was a strong Trump supporter.
  • Bits of his hit list have been trickling out. He also want to murder ” Governor Tim Walz, US Representative Ilhan Omar, US Senator Tina Smith, and Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, among others.” Shut the fuck up all you people claiming he was a liberal Democrat.

  • We have him on video preaching in the Democratic Republic of Congo about the evils of homosexuality.
  • Boelter abandoned a car in Sibley, MN — that’s southwest of Minneapolis.

I don’t normally cheer on the cops, but in this case, I’m saying…go get him, boys.

That message he left his roommates says that he knows he has screwed up (I don’t think he regrets the murders, he regrets being caught), so I don’t think he’s going to surrender peacefully.

Senator Mike Lee of Utah is now claiming that Boelter was a Marxist. Absolutely insane.

That letter to his roommates sounds like a cover to me. “I’m going to go murder a bunch of people like we’ve been talking about but let me write this note that says you don’t know anything about it…several times.” Oh, and the “love you guys” three times for emphasis seems a little over the top.

I’ve read that he preached at a church in the Congo region of Africa. There’s no doubt he’s a hard core Republican. Can’t be a Democrat at all.

“Online posts paint a picture of Boelter as a devout Christian and pastor, who preached at LaBorne Matadi, a church in the Congo, according to photos on the church’s Facebook page. An archived website for his ministry described his global travels to preach, stating, “He sought out militant Islamists in order to share the gospel and tell them that violence wasn’t the answer.”

I suspect he’s not going to be caught alive.

In that case, he might well battle it out with the cops when he is cornered.

Which means that he might end up killing even more people.

If he is running out of vehicles to abandon, he may try to take someone else’s at gun point.

  5. fishy says

I want to know more about the trading of gunfire and the escape on foot.
He looks like he couldn’t sprint 100 yards without collapsing in a heap.

  6. Kagehi says

Yeah, not sure which is stupider, the fact that the right immediately tries to pivot to, “Somehow, despite killing leftists, and targeting only Democrats, he must be a leftist/Marxist.”, or the fact that some large percentage of MAGA will go, “Oh, gosh! This makes total sense!”

  7. hillaryrettig1 says

I wonder if his wife owned the company so these presumably anti-DEI people could get set-aside contracts aimed at women-owned businesses.

I’m pretty sure the cops and FBI are of a similar mindset and are going to be having some heavy conversations with those guys. If they were involved, one of them is going to start singing to save his own skin before the other guys can do the same.

  9. gijoel says

I’d rather he gets captured and spends the rest of his long, miserable life staring at sky through barred windows. Unfortunately, I think there’s a good chance that Trump will pardon him somewhere down the line. So I hope he dies in a hail of gunfire and no one else gets hurt.

That letter to his room mates sounds like a love letter. I’m probably reading too much into. It sounds like he was separated from his wife. I can’t blame her if that’s the case.

  10. says

the way he’s being leftwashed by lying-ass rethugs all over the place? no pardon. perception is all that matters and if the base buys it he’ll run with it. i’ve said it before, sucks ass to be a right wing martyr.

  11. raven says

Yeah, I would say that right about now, Trump is writing his pardon.

I don’t see how that would work though.

This killer is going to be charged with state crimes by the state of Minnesota.
IIRC, the Federal government can’t pardon people for state criminal convictions.

Oh well. At least Trump can award him the Presidential Freedom Medal or something.

  12. microraptor says

This is a common refrain: every time a conservative person commits a crime that’s too high-profile to be swept under the rug, conservatives immediately start labeling them a liberal. It’s pretty much reflex at this point.

And call me a cynic or a conspiracy theorist, but I have to wonder how hard the cops and FBI are actually going to work to catch him.

  13. StevoR says

@ ^ microraptor : Which means he might suceed in assassinating more Democratic people on his kill list…

  14. StevoR says

I wonder how much support or hindrance this murderer will get from other Repugs now? Average Person-on-Sreets Repugs. On the one hand he’s supposedly a “Märxist” but, OTOH, he’s out there killing Democrats so..? How many accomplices or people willing to aid him might there be? Sickening thought really given how horribly normalised calling for physical deadly violence to be used against thsoe politicians you disagree with has become over in the states and more generally.

The man suspected of shooting dead a US politician and her husband has been arrested following a large-scale manhunt. Democratic former House speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband were shot and killed in their Minnesota home on Saturday, local time. Minnesota senator John Hoffman and his wife were also shot at their home a short distance away, but both survived.

Police have arrested 57-year-old Vance Boelter, who they allege had a list of 70 targets at the time of the shooting.

    ….(Snip)…

Officials have urged people not to speculate on the possible motive behind the shootings.

Writings found in Mr Boelter’s car did not match the format of a “traditional manifesto”, investigators said. Along with the list of targets, police said a “notebook” recovered included many “other thoughts” and documents. They have yet to elaborate further.

    Arrested and Charged

The manhunt is over. Suspected assassin Vance Boelter was arrested by authorities in Sibley County near his Green Isle home late Sunday night. He has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of second-degree attempted murder.

  17. woozy says

Okay… I had my money on that he had killed himself and they’d maybe find his body in a few days.

Okay, I know the difference between second and first degree murder but…. c’mon.

MINNEAPOLIS — Vance Boelter, the man accused of shooting two Minnesota Democratic lawmakers and their spouses, was captured late Sunday after a sprawling, two-day manhunt involving more than 100 officers, according to Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. “This cannot be the norm. It cannot be the way that we deal with our political differences,” Walz told reporters. State House Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were shot and killed in their home, while state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, survived. Earlier Sunday, authorities had recovered Boelter’s car and personal belongings about an hour from where the shootings occurred.

Vance Boelter is suspected in the fatal shootings of Melissa Hortman, a top Democrat in the Minnesota Capitol, and her husband, Mark, in the Minneapolis suburb of Brooklyn Park. Boelter is also suspected in the shooting that injured Democratic state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, in Champlin, another suburb.
Police found a list of Democrats supporting abortion rights and other liberal causes in a vehicle outside the Hortman residence that was used by the shooter. Though Boelter didn’t like major Democratic figures including Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and former president Joe Biden, the suspect didn’t express extreme views, his roommate and longtime friend told The Washington Post.
While he had dreams of starting a home security company, Boelter worked odd hours for firms that recover bodies in the Twin Cities, and rented a room at a home in Minneapolis where he stayed a few days a week while he was on call, according to his roommates, who were questioned by the FBI on Sunday. Authorities have also interviewed Boelter’s wife as part of their investigation, who they said has been cooperative.

Lawmakers from across the Midwest appeared on a list maintained by Vance Boelter, the man accused of killing a Minnesota state lawmaker and her husband, a police official said.
In addition to Minnesota, officials on the list came from Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Nebraska and Iowa, said Drew Evans, the head of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

State charges have been issued against Vance Boelter for the murder of a state lawmaker and her husband, and the FBI will review whether federal charges should be brought as well, said Drew Evans, the superintendent of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

Minnesota state Sen. John Hoffman (D) came out of his final surgery and is moving toward recovery, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) told reporters at a late night news conference Sunday.

During the briefing, Walz appealed for unity across the political spectrum. “Now is the time for us to recommit to the core values of this country, and each and every one of us can do it. Talk to a neighbor rather than arguing, debate an issue, shake hands, find common ground,” he said, paying tribute to state Rep. Melissa Hortman, who was killed along with her husband.

A grim-faced Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) said that violence cannot be the way the country deals with its political differences, after announcing the apprehension of Vance Boelter on suspicion of killing a lawmaker and her husband.
“One man’s unthinkable actions have altered the state of Minnesota,” Walz said.

It is pretty normal to undercharge at first in a case like this where the undercharge isn’t going to affect bail and the higher charge would require a more developed theory of the case and putting more evidence before the judge deciding bail. The charges will probably be increased to first degree murder charges–the difference being premeditation under Minnesota law–well before trial.

And, at 57 years old, the difference between a likely 40 year sentence and a life sentence is minimal.

These stand out to me: “…the suspect didn’t express extreme views,…”, and, “…Boelter worked odd hours for firms that recover bodies in the Twin Cities…” Bets on him going over the edge because, despite not having “extreme views” he bought into crap involving Democrats somehow being either responsible for disasters, and/or the failure to respond to them, then a) disasters happen anyway, and b) the whole failure to respond is 100% in the hands of Republicans, who don’t want to spend money on anything that saves “other” people’s lives (i.e. non-rich white people). But, sure, lets play the mainstream media game of, “Lets not speculate about his motives and instead just repeat the false speculation of the right wing, every time they open their mouths and lie about something.”…

Re pardons, I’m not a lawyer, but there’s a long long deplorable history of trying to apply the Bill of Rights to the states. SCOTUS was dragging their feet for about 100 years, arguing, incredibly, that the 14th Amendment was never meant to apply to the states in spite of clear legislative history that said otherwise. (This had the positive effect that for a long time states could have their own gun rules, but over the past fifty years that’s been changing and the interpretation of the 2nd has been changing.) Anyway, if the regime argued that the same 14A blanket that applies to the Bill of Rights applies to presidential pardons, I worry SCOTUS would simply agree. I’m actually surprised we’re not already there, since DoJ is trying to wrest TFG’s convictions away from NY.
