They might claim they never have sex and that is a believable claim. These aren’t nice people and a huge number of people wouldn’t find them attractive.

Resurrecting all-but-dead laws is only part of their plan. One reason the GOP has worked for decades to control so many state governments is to call for a Constitutional Convention…you know, to fix things like the 1st Amendment “Establishment Clause” because America is a Christian country. How about a “sanctity of life” section that enshrines the anti-abortion mythos. Or, refining the separation of the Federal government from states so that states have more leeway to decide social issues like, say, school desegregation or the virtual enslavement of certain groups of people through the legal system. Et cetera. If you lived in the South in the 50s and early 60s you heard all of these things repeatedly. They haven’t stop dreaming of those halcyon days of yore when women and black/brown people knew their place.
I don’t think any of the current members of the Court need contraceptives anymore. Which of course might affect how they view the issue. For Republicans, if it’s not affecting them personally now or next week at the latest, it’s not important.

@2: pretty much anyone outside of my immediate friends group. Hell, other posters on Disqus, Facebook, and Xitter as well. Most of them swore that they were “liberal” or “progressive” but when I flat out told them that this is what conservatives wanted, they didn’t believe it.
Same people who think there will be a Shirley exception for abortion believe that people like me are exaggerating.
Ridana @ #7 — I find it difficult to believe that their personal child-creation status would affect their decision. If they had an unwanted pregnancy they could afford to get that taken care of, and would, regardless of the laws. There were ways for a well-off family to terminate a pregnancy before Roe vs Wade, and those methods still exist.
It is not hard at all.
.1. The rich would just fly to Europe, get an abortion, and do some shopping.
.2. The middle class would travel to Canada or Mexico, get an abortion, and do some shopping.
Which leaves;
..3. The young and poor who will seek out black market abortion pills or unlicensed abortion providers with questionable medical training.
Which was the status quo before Roe versus Wade.
It’s well known that making abortion illegal doesn’t stop it or even slow it down. It just makes it a lot more dangerous for a whole lot of people.
Issues like this deserve as much public scrutiny as possible, considering how the “Handmaid’s Tale” level of theocracy is closer than many Americans seem to believe. That being said, I’m surprised that I haven’t seen more sources going into “Project 2025”, where their plans for a fascist nation of extreme theocracy are laid bare. It’s nightmare fuel which Biden’s team should be including into their campaign ads, and I’m surprised how little I see it discussed on social media.
raven @ #11 — Short of international travel or risky back-alley practices, there were ways that a woman, generally a white women with health insurance and a longstanding relationship with an OB-GYN, could get a little clean up work down. In the early 70s I worked in a hospital for a year, and a couple of times I saw the nurses raised eyebrows over a procedure but was too young and naive at the time to know what was probably going on.
I had a girl friend who worked at a Catholic hospital in the 70sl She come home and tell me how shocked the doctors where when they did a D&C, I think, to find out that the patient was in fact pregnant. Golly gee whiz they would say.
This is because… pomerantz!?? (ask Trump what it means).
Just as Lauren Boebert represent the lowest sludge of the body politic, these regressive judges – who were picked on purely political grounds- are the worst antediluvian critters ever to read a law book.
But even if Biden et al get a solid majority in congress they will almost certainly not follow the example of Lincoln and appoint new judges.
Perhaps I’m just slow on the uptake, but this interview with journalist and author Casey Michel crystallized something I hadn’t fully taken on board up until now:
The Republicans are no longer even pretending to be the party of small government. No more drowning governments in small bathtubs. Since the MAGA takeover, they have fully embraced the idea that the power of the government is there to be wielded, and they’re not shy about saying it. Roll on the authoritarians. They have big plans for this country, and Putin and Orban have shown the way…
At the very least, they should be abolish the filibuster and then set about abolishing all these zombie laws the Supreme Court is wanting to use, and put a whole new bunch of modern legislation in its place. Sure the fascists will sue, but they won’t win every battle and if Congress did its job, they could start rolling back the tide — again.
Rebecca Watson and Jadehawk are the people who occasionally remind me of the good times 15 years ago. Nowadays I’m reading Sarah Kendzior and realise that the USA will be ended come January, and that this will be followed by Putin’s assault on NATO minus USA. Add in the climate catastrophe and the 1 or 2 mutations we are away from a bird flu pandemic with 50% mortality, and I don’t really see why I should stop drinking right now.
