On April 17, Chris Kluwe will be speaking at the Morris Area High School at PFLAG’s Break The Silence day. Good news! This area is dreadfully homophobic — the most interaction town had with gown was the time the student body elected a gay man to homecoming queen, and just try getting local schools to attend UMM plays that touch on gay issues — and I’m actually impressed that he gets to speak at the high school. Normally the district would melt down at the slightest hint of a pro-tolerance speaker.

???
Like a Carrie-esque prank? I am confuse.

Well, you see, he couldn’t be elected prom king because he is not a man, he is a queer….which really is just a kind of girl….
I’m sure they all thought it was mighty progressive of them to allow such a thing. The pats on the backs must have been audible for miles and miles…
I hope Chris gives them hell.

The eternal struggle: stand for your beliefs, or support your favorite football team. Though given his letter on the way out, you’d think they’d be double against him.

@1, @2: It was the university student body that elected a man as homecoming queen, not the high school’s. If it was a prank, it was a dig at the town, not the student they elected.

I was basically going to say much what hoku @3 said. He was a former Viking; there’s probably a lot of “support your favorite football team” going in his favor.

Like loreo @1, I’m having difficulty understanding what this means:
PZ Myers says
“town & gown” refers to the common interactions between universities (gown) and the surrounding community (town). Morris largely ignores UMM to a sad degree, but we did get a strong reaction from various people in town when UMM students elected a gay man to be homecoming queen — it was like the local farmers suddenly realized there are gay people at the university, and even worse, the U had no problem with that.
The letters to the local paper were something to read, and we had all these people yelling at the university and declaring that they’d never donate another penny to us, and how they were going to leave us a million dollars in their wills, but not anymore, because we tolerate gays. It was a lot like the foofaraw that followed when I desecrated a cracker. Only it wasn’t my fault, this time.

Thanks for clearing up my confuzzlement.
