The Sydney Morning Herald has one of those end-of-the-year assessments, including a list of the most commented stories they published in 2012. Top of the list, most heavily commented story of the year? The one on the Global Atheist Convention, of course. It’s got almost 2000 comments right now.

Good to see! I live in the state of Queensland a long way from Melbourne. Not much in the media here but good to see coverage in the national media. Non-belief is becoming a popular discussion point as the churches and religion shoot themselves in the foot with their ongoing tsunami of bigotry and hate, ‘specially regarding same sex marriage. They know they’re under seige, how can it be any other way when you’re selling nonsense? Not much of the baby jesus around this xmas either. Every year less and less baby jesus more and more Santa. At least you can sit on Santa’s lap while all you can do with jesus is eat bits of flesh and drink his blood. Hmmm, that can’t be healthy, or sane.

Depends on where you are robster. I’m in a small town in rural Victoria and we had a Christmas carol sing-a-long in the main park complete with nativity scene and a youth play telling the baby Jeebus birth story with the aid of superheroes. Yes, it was as surreal as it sounds. And in the hour or so of singing Aussie Jingle Bells and Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer were the only secular ones. All the rest were very much of “the reason for the season” type. The whole thing finished with a recitation of the Lord’s Prayer.
