Have you been counted?

Participate in the Atheist Census It’s quick and easy, and then we get to see the stats, too.

Currently, the most godless country in the world seems to be…Brazil. Somebody is doing a good job of promoting it down there, I think.

Get on the list. As a bonus, I think every participant gets the Mark of the Beast and is automatically enrolled in a sweepstakes where the grand prize is an evening with the Whore of Babylon. Also, any Christians who try to skew the poll will be instantly damned to hell by Jesus. Just warning you.

BUT THEY’LL USE THIS TO TRACK US DOWN AND TAKE OUR GUNS

    OHHHHhhhhh

    Atheist census.

    Sorry, wrong paranoia subject.

  2. Big Boppa says

    Wow. That didn’t take long.

Atheist Census experiences a high volume of entries and to make sure that everyone has the chance to submit and confirm their details we had to temporarily disable the submission form.
Thank you for understanding and please come back in a few minutes!

  3. Kevin Anthoney says

    Looks like you’ve melted it:

Atheist Census experiences a high volume of entries and to make sure that everyone has the chance to submit and confirm their details we had to temporarily disable the submission form.

Apparently, 4,484 is “a high volume of entries”. This doesn’t bode well.

    *squee*

I’m sure the Whore of Babylon would have a lot of interesting stories to tell.

(I’m sure whoever entered that as the grand prize considered that not all contestants are men *khm*)

  5. Ogvorbis says

Apparently, it was the sudden influx as soon as it was posted on Pharyngula. The initial clickfest has subsided and they allowed me to submit to them.

  6. marcos viniciusobino cunha junior says

There are times when I feel proud to be Brazilian. This is one of them. It’s good to know that there are so many atheists over here, specially if you consider that this is still one of the most catholic countries in the world. People seem to be waking up.

  7. Beatrice says

The number is slowly going up when I refresh, so some submissions are obviously getting through, but I keep getting the message mentioned in #3.

  8. Randomfactor says

Counted. I think the US contingent will edge out the Brazilians but it may be a close shave.

  9. microraptor says

    Just got the confirmation email.

Good stuff: the numbers keep going up. I’m really surprised that India is currently smoking everyone else, I wonder if it will retain its lead.

Bad stuff: 75.4% of surveyed people are male- which means that atheists aren’t doing enough to attract women, though I guess anyone who hangs out here could have guessed that already.

  10. Beatrice says

Those who want to look up reports for individual countries, careful! You can only generate 5 reports per hour.

  11. says

    @microraptor

It’s better or worse depending on where you look (you can filter by country). Canada and the USA have around to 65% male (not great but better) where as Brazil is 83% male. The slanting of the data towards Brazil might also explain why there are so many ex catholics.

  12. graham says

“an evening with the Whore of Babylon”.

Any chance of swapping that for an evening with Eccentrica Gallumbits, the Triple Breasted Whore of Eroticon Six?

I too am getting the message reported in #3. Head-count is now over 5 000. Not really a big enough number to draw conclusions about worldwide atheism….

  13. dustinarand says

Only one entry from China? Having lived there I can tell you most people there don’t believe in God. How exactly are they using this data to extrapolate some meaningful numbers?

  14. microraptor says

I doubt that they are yet. But the conclusion that comes to mind is using it to compare their responses to the percentage of the population that’s identified as atheist in each country to figure out how much of the total group places like Pharyngula are reaching.

  15. says

    Microraptor:

Yeah, I figured that Brazil was the reason for ex-Catholics being so prevalent.

You’re underestimating the reach of the catholic church. I was just counted and tallied up another ‘catholicism’ and I’m in the U.S.

  16. says

They ran this thing earlier this year and it ended up getting shut down for some reason, just a day after I put in some effort to promote it on some forums I frequent. Was a bit disappointing. But oh well, I’ve gotten myself counted once again, but I’m still waiting for the email.

  17. atheistallianceinternational says

Thank you very much for supporting Atheist Census PZ!
#3 – it’s not the number of entries that’s high and causing issues, it’s the rate of submissions – I think primarily thanks to Pharyngula at the moment!

  18. Sastra says

    Done.

Small point … but why did AAI use the Dawkins’ A in the video, instead of the more general atheist symbol — the one they themselves had a hand in helping select?

(It’s my avatar, if you’re wondering which one I mean; gaining in popularity and more distinctive (and less Dawkins) than the other.)

  19. blindrobin says

This is a bit late but uhhhh… One need not be male to enjoy a tryst with the Whore of Babylon.

  20. says

    Beatrice @7

Who said the Whore of Babylon is only interested in men? In any event, there must be a Gigolo of Babylon somewhere.

  21. Beatrice says

    eoraptor,

Well, when a night with a whore is a prize somewhere, it’s almost certain that the whole thing is geared towards straight men. Women are hardly in the picture, lesbian or not.

  22. Beatrice says

Actually, I’d like to substitute the grand prize for an evening with Hypatia of Alexandria — you know, The Librarian!

Oooh, I like this prize better.

  23. says

Sorry for the commercial, this is for the spanish speaking atheist

We are currently transmitting “El primer congreso mexicano de ateismo”.

(sorry for the quality… currently transmiting from the “Escuela nacional de antropologia e historia”… so the internet here seems to be a prehispanic leftover…

It will be today and tomorrow.

  24. Agent Silversmith, Honey Powered says

Babylon? Isn’t that where all the world’s languages appeared fully formed via a godly fingersnap, instead of going through that pesky development process?

Signed the census. I’d like my prize to be an evening with Epicurus, and could you please hold the sun still, to stretch the evening out? Thanksomuch.

  25. Lofty says

Hah, one of the benefits of living on the arse of the world, when Kylie Sturgess put up the link last night all went swimmingly. Maybe y’all should get up earlier?
Well anyway, that demonstrates the power of Free PeeZ.

  26. laisa says

Ok. Finally, the page loaded… only to tell me the submission form is disabled. :(
Also, apparenly no Uruguayans have been counted yet…

  27. consciousness razor says

We are currently transmitting “El primer congreso mexicano de ateismo”.

Looks like it’s going to be a really interesting program. I wish my Spanish wasn’t so awful.

  28. says

Man, I was the first from Croatia to participate, and now there are already 8 Croats counted! Believe you me, for Croatia, that’s a nice number, considering that the page is up for quite a short time.

  29. icarus says

I am Brazilian, I’m happy with the numbers :-)

Brazilians use many social networks, so it is normal that we’re in first place now, due to disclosure.

But Brazil is an extremely religious country, so I believe, Brazil should fall in the rankings.

  30. Nick Gotts (formerly KG) says

I’m not very keen on being told what to do.

So, no. I shan’t participate. – John Morales

Your courage in standing out against the pressure to do so is truly awesome.

  31. Nick Gotts (formerly KG) says

So… would I have to go to my town of birth? – alkisvonadis

No, of course not! You have to go to the town where a semi-mythical royal ancestor was allegedly born.

  32. =8)-DX says

Hey. I’m a card-carrying atheist. My local supermarket benefit card has the mark of the beast on it already.

  33. John Morales says

    [meta]

    Nick, heh.

More to the point, it explicitly puts on record that PZ’s groupies acolytes minions regular blog commenters are at times refractory.

    There FIFY.

  35. consciousness razor says

I refuse to accept that. It’s done no such thing.

  36. Stardrake says

    I’m in. Number 7,509.

As for the Whore of Babylon–I dunno, Downbelow’s not such a nice place to visit…..

  37. =8)-DX says

Also, the site seems to be overloaded (with 7.6K signatures??), is someone running a DOS attack or what? I demand to be counted!

  38. robro says

Census!? You can’t do that!!! God doesn’t like them. God will be angry. God will send a plague to punish us…just like the Israelites after he induced David to take a census.

Also note: the Whore of Babylon can be male or female…perhaps both. Or even neither. Who knows.

  39. John Morales says

    [OT]

robro, the Whore of Babylon is an allegorical concept, and because it’s a reified weltanschauung contrary to the Abrahamic ethos, it’s personified as female.

  40. =8)-DX says

Whore of Babylon.. wasn’t that supposed to be Rome? Or Nero? Shit I’m getting my Revelation/Divine Comedy mixed up.

I’d go with a succubus. Or incubus. I’m not gay but the Rocky Horror Show has educated me of the benefits of hypersexual beings.

  41. JohnnieCanuck says

Seems a bit odd to use the total number of respondents to establish the competition metric for countries.

Using the only two countries whose population figures I know, Canadians as a percentage are responding at more than twice the rate of USAnians

  42. F [disappearing] says

    alkisvonidas says:

So… would I have to go to my town of birth?

No, that never happened anywhere ever.

  43. =8)-DX says

Status notice: the site seems to be down? WTF did they host this on? (unreliablehosting.net?)

  44. =8)-DX says

Atheist Census is offline as the result of a denial of service (DoS) attack.

We don’t know who is behind the attack but it seems to be a reasonable conclusion that they do not like atheists being counted.

We will provide an update as soon as possible.

Don’t think it’s just pharyngulites. You can usually easily distinguish DoS attacks from regular (even heavy) traffic.

  45. mattkovach says

On 7 December Atheist Alliance International launched Atheist Census at http://www.atheistcensus.com, a global project to count and collect information on the world’s atheists. The response to the site was very positive, with well over 8,000 peop
le contributing before it was taken offline as a result of a DoS (denial of service) attack, less than 24 hours after launch. We do not know who is behind the attack, but it’s a reasonable conclusion that they do not like atheists being counted. We are working hard to get Atheist Census online again.

  46. mikemike says

The atheist movement is often said to be unwelcoming to women.
The grand prize is an evening with a prostitute?
    See any connections?

Male or female, prostitutes are usually abused and suffering peoples. Joking about it (even mythical prostitutes) isn’t funny.

  47. DutchA says

Wanted to be counted. And since “(…)they do not like atheists being counted.” I will be back.
Can’t keep a good atheist down.

  48. khms says

    Hmm.

    First saw it at Kylie’s.

Couldn’t find any link to anywhere that would actually ask for my data.

Now it’s at PZ’s, and all I get is that DOS message.

    Getting just slightly irritated.

  49. Fred Salvador - The Public Sucks; Fuck Hope says

Male or female, prostitutes are usually abused and suffering peoples.

Way to perpetuate a stereotype, champ! Some prostitutes are certainly that; then again so are some cleaners, farmhands, factory workers, etc etc.

Census still isn’t working. Religionists haxxorin’ for God!

  50. =8)-DX says

Male or female, prostitutes are usually abused and suffering peoples. Joking about it (even mythical prostitutes) isn’t funny.

I guess these kind of references happen because a) many atheists don’t consider prostitution / sex bad per-se and b) Christians (who PZ was parodying with his WoB/Satan language) often portray atheists as sexual perverts and hedonists.

Child murder and cannibalism are also not generally funny things to happen. But I still have a baby sammich for breakfast every morning.

  51. =8)-DX says

To clarify my point a) – many atheists consider a slut/prostitute positive attituted to be much more constructive than the usual shaming that goes on by the major religions.
