They all look alike, don’t they?

The Republican National Committee is reaching out to the Latino community with a new website, RNCLatinos.com, which is nice. Unfortunately, they put a splash of color on the page with a picture of happy smiling kids — a stock photo of a group of…Asian kids.

Well, you know, they’re slightly less pale than the Good Ol’ Party, so it’s close enough, right?

The stock photo found on Shutterstock is listed with tags including “asia, asian, cheeks, children, cool… interracial, japanese… thailand, together, trendy.” But the words ‘hispanic’ or ‘latino’ are nowhere on the page.

I see they’ve put a lot of effort into this.

  2. Brownian says

They took it down while they searched the country clubs for someone who knows what a Latino looks like. Everyone’s pretty sure Romney fired one at some point, so it’s just a matter of time.

  3. Brownian says

This is so precious. Next time a Christian tells me life is meaningless without God, I’m going to describe how I felt when I read this.

Oops, pardon me. I didn’t realise this thread had already been won.

  4. baal says

Let’s not forget a good ole tea party type (R), Ms. Angle. She felt (feels?) that Latinos are almost Asian so she can like them.

  5. Ogvorbis: Ignorant sycophantic magpie. says

And they have already taken the photo down. Do you suppose they will admit it happened? Or apologize?

  6. 'Tis Himself says

I can hear the discussion at RNC headquarters:

Latino, Asian, what’s the difference? They’re non-White. A gook by any other name is still a gook. Anyway we only have to pay attention to them until November.

  7. Shplane says

[RichWhiteRepublican]What? You mean there are different kinds of brown people? But the little box on the part of the job application that tells me who not to hire just says “white” and “non-white”.[/RichWhiteRepublican]

Anyone more familiar with Spanish than I am vetted their site for accuracy (of translation, not going to touch their actual content)? Some of the phrasing seems awkward, but, I’m fully aware that some things are simply different in Spanish than the equivalent English phrase.

  9. DiscordianStooge says

What, Asian people can’t speak Spanish? This is just proof that you are the real racist! /s

    That’s because its probably Mandarin.

[teach me to preview, will ya?]

  11. says

If they’re lazy enough to use a stock photo without reading the tags, they’re probably lazy enough to use Google’s language translator instead of actually hiring a Spanish speaking person to write their website.

  12. Phalacrocorax, z Třetího Světa says

That’s one crappy website. Considering the random switches from Spanish to English and the lack of content, I imagine they’re trying to spend as few money as possible on Latino voters.

Let’s be fair to the rich white Republicans. They have plenty of daily contact with Latinos. After all, they need someone to clean their houses and take care of their gardens.

There’s only so much gop rhetoric I can read before puking, but what little I scanned seemed accurate enough to me.

    Heh.

There was an article in the Sydney Morning Herald earlier this week about the lack of ethnic diversity in private schools. Someone wrote a letter in response saying that it was government schools that lack diversity, since in some cases “up to 96% of enrolments come from language backgrounds other than English”. To some people, “foreign” is a single homogenous group.

Reminds me that not too many years ago the Australian government used to have a Department of Immigration and Indigenous Affairs. Seriously, by what logic are immigration and indigenous affairs even remotely related? Might as well call it the Department for Cheeky Darkies and have done.

Are you mad? They have a house manager to MANAGE the help. Kind of like how a CEO has directors to manage managers to manage “the help.”

I like being able to reduce head count by 2 million at a time.

But who carries the hor d’oeuvres around at the cocktail parties?

  17. Robert B. says

    Colin,

Well, sometimes people pretend that indigenous peoples are independent nations rather than conquered ones. Then they can lump indigenous people and immigrants together under “people who aren’t part of the country but want something from us.” Whether this is logically equivalent to “Department for Cheeky Darkies” is left as an exercise to the reader.

(It could be worse. IIRC, the USA government organization for dealing with our continent’s indigenous people used to be part of the Department of War.)

  18. What a Maroon, Applied Linguist of Slight Foreboding says

That should be hors d’oeuvres, of course.

    Pardon my French.

  19. biologyismygod says

I don’t understand it. If the Republicans wanted to reach out to their Latino supporters, why a website? Why not just go over and visit them both in person?

  20. biologyismygod says

    “Hors d’oeuvres?”. Sounds…foreign.

    Surely you mean “Freedom Snacks”?

  21. says

Given their longing for a society based on 1950’s Hollywood, we should consider ourselves lucky their “Latinos” weren’t just a bunch of white people wearing ponchos and giant hats.

More unfairness! Hell, Jeb Bush alone has three little brown ones.

Maybe in the USA or Canada (or even New Zealand) but not so much in Australia. Over here indigenous people and immigrants get lumped together as “people we wish didn’t exist (and maybe if we ignore them long enough they won’t)”.

I say immigrants but I should probably restrict that to refugees. The vast majority of our immigrants are good, clean white folk.

    … he said sarcastically…

I can’t comment overall, but personally I found their use of tu overfamiliar. But that could simply be because I don’t want to be on an informal basis with the GOP. Also they’ve taken the site down, so I’m going by nothing but the screenshot.

  25. says

This is just too freakin’ rich. Surely someone knew we would be watching and that we needed a few chuckles, especially after the endless barrage of GOP moronics we’ve had to endure. There have to be at least a few non-Rethugs in the GOP architecture just to make sure things don’t fall completely apart.

This is from the Australian habit of one department per minister – so if a minister gets two portfolios, they get one department that does two jobs. At one stage, a minister got three portfolios, so was running the Department of Immigration, Local Government and Ethnic Affairs. Operationally, the three were quite separate.

  27. says

Technically, I think ‘immigrant and indigenous’ as a grouping is pretty good – it’s communities with a differing language who have to work to retain their culture without being swamped by the common culture that everyone shares.

So your tools would be similar; linguists, social workers, and historians working with teachers and schools to make sure there’s room and time for these communities to thrive.

You’re going to end up with specific linguists and historians and social workers for each community anyhow, but the structure is going to be pretty similar… No need to duplicate the administrators.
